It's not a matter of being stupid. Sure, if the team was giving less guaranteed money, it would be stupid of the player to accept it. But if Harris (making up numbers for the sake of simplicity) were owed $30M guaranteed at $10M a year, the Jets need help with the cap now and know that in 2014 they have room, they could say "dude, take $5M this year, and we'll make the rest of it up" - and of course they've have to guarantee more or give somewhere else. But as long as the player is making the same guaranteed money and possibly even gaining more guaranteed for a future year - why wouldn't they be amenable to it?

Of course I'm using a very simplified version of what would actually transpire, and I readily admit that. I'm not familiar with what happened with Keyshawn, but if he allowed himself to get fucked then that's his problem.

Starters we must replace or resign

    Defense
    Yeremiah Bell
    Mike DeVito
    Bryan Thomas
    Pace
    Scott

    Offense
    Lex Hilliard
    Brandon Moore
    Matt Slauson

Did I miss anyone? Are there any backups that we think can step in for them? I didnt include landry because I figure we might go with bush. Same goes for Greene, I figure powell will start next year. Also I removed folk because we should be able to get a kicker fairly cheap.

I am thinking some of these guys on this list will come back much cheaper than they signed for previously. If we really can free 19 mil in cap we should be ok.

Are we really in that much trouble?

    you missed keller and greene.

greene is as good as gone and keller may get the franchise tag

I did an edit to explain. I figure they can just start powell and cumberland.

Im a bit skeptical about ducasse starting. Can coples play every down at this point? He is a beast but we Def need a good backup there. Forgot to remove scott, davis should take that job

I dont see the Jets franchising keller, he isnt worth it imo.

Good calls on the replacements you listed. I dont think it will be as bad as the media makes it sound.

coples will be a 3 down lineman,no worries there.we are not in that bad of shape, there is definitely going to be a bit of a youth movement but mostly in the sub packages i think. but the defense will be good and the offense will dictate how well the team does. also don't be surprised if we lose a game or 2 due to specials. they usually struggle a bit with a young roster.

    Consider the following as starters:
    QB - ?

    RB - Powell
WR - ?, Holmes, Kerley, Hill
    FB/TE - Baker/Reuland (I don't think we'll use a true FB under Morhningwheg)
    TE - ?

    OT - Ferguson, Howard
    OG - ?, ?
    OC - Mangold

    NT - Pouha/K. Ellis
    DE - Wilkerson, Coples

    ILB - Harris, ?
    OLB - ?, ?

    CB - Cromartie, Wilson
    S - ?, ?

    K - ?
    P - Malone
    LS - Purdum

    So we need 11 starters.
Assuming that Bell, Edwards, Moore are brought back and the fact we drafted a LB in rd 3 last year (Davis), so he should be competing to start (ergo, no need to spend big money on ILB), we need 7 starters:

1 QB -> Flynn / T. Jackson (to compete with Sanchez)? Geno Smith?
1 TE -> Keller? Ertz / Eifert ? Draft loaded in the later rds.
1 OG -> zone scheme guards aren't that expensive, nor valuable in the draft.
2 OLBs -> 1 high in the draft, 1 god knows where to compete with McIntyre/Sapp
    1 S -> 3rd draft?
    1 K -> cheap

Ideal scenario for me would be:

    FLYNN (FA)

    Powell, POWERBACK (dime a dozen)
EDWARDS (FA cheap), Holmes, Kerley, S. Hill
    Baker
    EIFERT (2nd rd)

    Ferguson, Howard
MOORE (FA), 4TH RD DRAFT PICK
    Mangold

    Pouha/K.Ellis
    Wilkerson/Coples/DEVITO (FA)

    JONES (1st rd), McIntyre/someone
    Harris, Davis/someone

    Cromartie, Wilson
    Bell, 3RD RD DRAFT PICK

Cro was the team MVP last year. Given that we do not have any guarantee that Revis will be on the team two years from now we do not have an adequate replacement if Cro is dealt. In short, he is a core member of the team and is not going anywhere.

Cro sometimes plays up to his contract? Are you serious? Did you not see how he played this year, he earned every penny he made.

Jets returning starters in 2013 (players who started at least one game in 2012 at the position):

    Offense

QB - Mark Sanchez, Greg McElroy
    RB - Bilal Powell
WR - Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, Santonio Holmes
    TE - Konrad Reuland
    OT - D'Brickashaw Ferguson
    OG - Vladimir Ducasse
    C - Nick Mangold
    K - None
    P - Robert Malone

    Defense

DE - Mo Wilkerson, Quinton Coples
DT - Sione Pouha, Kenrick Ellis
    OLB - Garrett McIntyre
    ILB - David Harris
    S - None
CB - Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson

That's a lot of holes to fill and that alongside the cap space available are the crux of the Jets problems for this year. Resolving the issues in a way that is effective in rebuilding the team to compete long-term is the bigger picture.

like its been stated before. some of the holes are already filled with reserves from last year. right now pencil in d.davis and ducasse as starters and we will bring back a few of our own f.a.'s

everyone is making it sound like the starting lineup will be 11 rookie udfa. its not as dire as it seems

I'd rather be a fan of a team in a tight cap situation that requires creativity than be a fan of a team that routinely has $20M of cap money they refuse to spend.

On the whole Tannenbaum's contracts and the players he gave them to served their purpose as we needed them. The Hunter contract, Sanchez re-up, Revis, Tebow contracts were reaches for some reason. We have seen this before , but the likes of Chad Pennington and Curtis Martins are no longer here. Those guys would work their contracts for the betterment of the team. Do we have players like this on the Jets? Will Santonio re-work his contract to help his team. Will Revi$e relax his mentality of Get Mine because I could pull a hammy any second now. The Jets can come out of this with a team ready to contend if players help their franchise. Coming out of these kind of Cap hells was one of Tannenbaus greatest skill sets.

and who is to say that demario davis is a starter in this league? we already are pretty sure that ducasse isnt.

thats the point, our situation is not great, the holes will get filled but they will probably be filled by guys who arent the best fit or talent. THAT is the issue. THAT is why next year looks like it may be a tough year. we all know the holes will get filled, they always get filled. it just makes it more difficult when you have to promote guys who are not necessarily starter quality or bring in free agents who arent as good as you would like.

yes yes cromartie is the key to winning the superbowl. i have as much faith in him as all his baby mommas do that the check will come every month.

The Jets have four primary issues at the moment that they have to deal with in order to build a real window at a Super Bowl opportunity:

    1. There's no QB on the roster that anybody can reasonably project as being the key piece in a Super Bowl run.

    2. The players the Jets have locked up long-term were supposed to be part of the window that has collapsed at this point. None of them are young at this point, they're all in their prime and they are supposed to be winning Super Bowls right now, not in 2 or 3 years.

    3. The best player on the team is at one of the last positions anybody would rationally build a team around in the salary cap era. He's coming off an injury and he's an unrestricted free agent in a year with no tag available to give the Jets any leverage.

    4. The salary cap is going to make many decisions for the Jets over the next season or two that would be better made in a vacuum instead of with the added pressure that the cap brings.

If Idzik and company can resolve three of the four issues favorably over the next year they'll have done a very strong job of righting the franchise and they'll still have another major issue to deal with before the Jets are likely to be competitive.

Pushing money to future years. Wonderful idea. Take the medicine now.

Cromartie? Wasn't there a report last week about Rex looking to weed out some bad characters with Cromartie being on that list? The proposed restructuring guarantees Cromartie on the team for 3 more years. Fantastic idea.

If Rex is sick of Cromartie, the guy must be a major pain in the ass.

As we hear it, the primary factor for Ryan is that he’s hoping to clear out some of the guys who have contributed to the problems in the locker room over the past couple of years. Cromartie is regarded as one of those guys.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/27/jets-could-trade-cromartie-instead-of-revis/

The next coach shouldn't saddled with Cromartie.

Extend Harris. Lets prolong that bad contract.

I have every confidence in idzik that he can get the cap situation under control.

That said, to the person who questioned whether or not demario davis can be a starter in the nfl, everybody has to start somewhere. the only way we are ever going to know whether anyone can be a starter in the nfl is to play them.
