The difference is, you will have your salary readjusted every year. Do you get 50% of the future earning as a signing bonus too? And if you fail to get to the corporate standard, you WILL take a pay cut during the salary renegotiation. We all know Santonio sucked big hairy moose balls after cashing in big. Apples to oranges. It's as if you were guaranteed 100K but had potential to make up to 125K, and your boss came to you and said we're going to either give you 110K or fire you. But if you were fired, you'd max out at 100K and would go through moving and all that goes with starting a new job. That 110K would be your best financial bet.
Seems people are missing the point. This has nothing to do with him being a team player or whatever. Holmes will likely agree to a pay cut because he is unlikely to get as much money on the open market as the Jets will offer him with a pay cut. So basically his options will be to make $8 million (or whatever it ends up being) with the Jets or $7.5 million elsewhere.
$7.5M and the ability to sign with a club with a better QB situation (shouldn't be hard) wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for Holmes. Could potentially help set himself up for one last decent pay day in 2014. Have to wonder if he'd take that gamble on himself if the Jets try to come closer to $7.5M than $11M.
My guess is that he will restructure to about 8-8.5 million this year. He would only be able to make 7.5 max somewhere else, so he is still getting more than he could anywhere else, and the Jets are saving 3-3.5 million towards the cap for this year.
Fuck Holmes just gived him a piss test every 5 days, he will gladly restructure. There has to be a moral terpitude clause in there.
This assumes that the Jets can afford to cut him (they can't) or will be able to find a suitor for a trade. I won't speculate on how likely that is. If Santonio thinks those aren't likely options for the Jets, he can easily justify risking the $500K knowing that the Jets might still be forced to pay the full $11.25M. Depending on how much he likes being a Jet, he might be willing to take that cut to change his situation anyway. I won't be surprised if he does take a paycut, but it seems far from a certain thing.
Valid points. This will all come down to whether Holmes thinks the Jets are bluffing. Considering how badly the offense performed last season, Holmes might think Jets don't have the balls to follow through on the roster cut.
I think they will increase Holmes guaranteed $ in 2014 and get the relief they need. Holmes wants to win , I think the image he has got since the Miami game does not represent the footballer or person. Does he like losing.. No you can see that but I don't believe he is the malcontent many portray him to be.
The absolutely can afford to cut Holmes. They save over a mill in cap space if the do and possibly more depending on how much he signs for elsewhere.

People act like this guy is satan incarnated because of a one or two off field incidents. I know that as Jets fans, we haven't won in a long time, but that's no excuse to bash the guy as if he's the end of the world. He's actually a really good player, but yeah he should restructure. By missing most of last year, he isn't living up to the contract or the money he made last year, so he owes it to the Jets, IMO. Letting him go would be a huge mistake, however.

Robert Woods would be an adequate replacement for Holmes in the 2nd round. I cannot wait until this loser is gone.
The Jets have a weak roster right now, especially at the receiver position. Plus they have salary cap difficulties. I really don't think they can afford to lose their best talent at the position and pay a good chunk of money to a player on another team. I guess they could, but I don't really see it helping them. Is the $1M+ they save going to buy another receiver who can outperform him, without requiring a lengthy acclimation period for Sanchez/McElroy? Also, what do you think Holmes is thinking right now? He has one year left before he has to negotiate his next contract. I would definitely be thinking about finding someplace with a proven QB and an offensive system that is already in place to get my production up. Taking (or rather risking) a $500K paycut for the opportunity to choose my own team wouldn't seem like such a horrible idea.
If it means setting an example - and re-establishing the right locker room environment, HELL YEAH you can cut that fucker right off the bat. There are things money cannot buy. You should try to get these first and foremost. As for the Jets, shit-canning this loser is pretty close to that actually. It is not even like he was the kind of talent at WR that made the DCs lose sleep over. He was at best mediocre for the past two seasons - and that's a very generous assessment too. And now he's on a gimp foot. Lateral quickness? Don't expect it to be there this season. By next season, he will hit 30. Mighty attractive WR for your team, no?
