I don't think anyone expects Rex to call any offensive plays but it's expected that he be aware of all that's happening on all phases of our football team. If the offensive (or special teams) have any issues then how can he do his job of fixing things if he's clueless to what's happening? If you were an offensive player and had an issue - would you go to Rex if you knew Rex were only concerned with what happens on one side of the ball. I think a lot of the Santonio/sanchez problems root back to Rex (a players coach) not being aware.
Where in the article/quotes does it say Rex isn't coaching the offense/ST? Why is there an assumption he's clueless on that? Again, I'm sure he's involved by he's letting someone who made their career on being an OC be an OC. I'm sure he will be directing the focus of the offense and what he wants the OC to accomplish. The OC them makes it happen through his playcalling ,teaching, etc. Rex came up as a DC. For example if we hired MM as coach, would we all scream in outcry if MM said he was going to call plays? No that would make sense. Just like it makes sense Rex should call defensive plays. I don't get this all or nothing idea that surrounds Jets fans. There is tons of ground between scripting ,designing, teaching and calling the offense to ignoring the offense and pretending defense is the only thing that happens on the field. Our coach is using his strength, his defensive mind, to better a team that well is going to have a lot of unproven players/yoing players learning a new system.
I disagree. Rex has 2 years left on the contract. What's stopping Woody from making next year the deciding one? 2013 -- rebuilding, sucking is expected. 2014 -- new & improved team. NOW Rex is coaching for his job.
Saying Rex doesn't know shit about offense is like saying General Paton didn't know shit about the Germans. Given a week to prepare, Rex will know more about your offense than you do.
I have a love hate relationship with Rex Ryan. What I love about him is what you see is what you get. I must have read his book PLAY LIKE YOU MEAN IT over 50 times and love how he fought through his disabilities and didn't try to hide them from anybody, he attacked them head on! I liked how Brian Billick hired Rex without an interview because he was so impressed by his passion of coaching in a clinic years earlier. I like his personality and I like his story. But what I don't like about Rex is what he did last year to Tim Tebow. I am not a Tebowite or whatever it's called but he skipped over Tebow to put McElroy in. Now I actualy like McElroy and despite what everyone on here says, I want McElroy as the starter, but that's another topic. Then Rex puts Sanchez back in for a meaningless game saying he gives us the best chance to win, and still lost. I will never get over that. I would have put Tebow in, what the fuck did we get hin for? People say he sucks, let me see him suck and then cut his ass! Didn't he fill in as a tight end or wide reciever or something while in the broncos, I don't follow them, but my point is I never heard Tebow say he only wants to be the QB he always says he wants to help the team any way he can. Rex should have said fuck the wild cat shit, get out their and be a tight end, or you're the half back today! He's the HC! I just felt he could have made better decisions to squeeze out a game or two. Other then that, I like him.
The assumption comes from Rexs entire time coaching here. Every season we hear from him that he wasn't involved enough on he offensive side of what ball and he needs to be going forward. I worry that he will become so invested in his defense now that he's calling plays again that he won't pay enough attention to offense and special teams. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Even without calling offensive or defensive plays in the games a head coach has his plate full so for RR to add to that plate..is down right awesome. I will never understand the self-defeating New York jet fan!(smh)
If Rex wants to call the defensive signals he should resign as HC and become a coordinator. This announcement will and should get him fired.
So every coach who only calls plays one way gets fired? Good maybe some SB winning coaches will be on the market for us
Rex's job is going to depend on 2014. If the Jets collapse next season then maybe the story is different and rightly so but I don't think a collapse is what we have in store. I think we're probably going to win enough games to make the Rex issue moot until 2014. The Jets are ranked 31st right now. 6-10 with a very young squad and a rebuilt offense would be no disgrace at all. And if the offense is better than expected? Well then all the Rex questions will go away for 3 or 4 years.
Are we really comparing Rex Ryan to General George Patton? Seriously? Who's next: Alexander the Great? Julius Ceasar? Hannibal? Amazing what 2 AFCCG losses will do for a guy's reputation.. SMH
I am kind of confused as to how a very good defensive coach cannot be good at being an offensive coach. Shouldn't he just be able to think backwards into it. I guess maybe I am just oversimplifying it. But if someone can be very good at game planning defense they know offense, they just dont know how to implement it at the right times and how to innovate.
I don't think it's a matter of Rex not being able to be a good coach on offense, just more so that he's a genius on the other side of the ball. If we have a coach with a skill set like his on our team I see no reason why he shouldn't be taking the backseat on offense and use all his focus on what he does best. We should be glad we finally have proven coaches on both sides of the ball now.
I'm fine with this so long as he doesn't continue to ignore the offense as the head coach...he needs to incorporate the offense into his thoughts and not continue to totally defer to his OC. While I think we finally have a capable OC Rex needs to shift his mentality on the topic.
He knows how to stop an offense, but he doesnt have the natural ability to call plays on offense like he does on defense. And the Sparano hire made him look stupid and has alot to do with why people feel that way about him now. He has to know enough about offense because he made his name stopping offenses but when you flip it around and now you have to call plays and make decisions to beat defenses its a totally diffrent thing
rex is a dc... he is pretty damn good at it too. he should go back to being a dc. what is the point of having a dc if your head coach is going to play dc? there is no fucking point to it. i have my doubts that morningwood will be the savior on the offensive side like you guys seem to think he will. they might as well both be assistant head coaches the way some people are talking, listen there is a good reason morningwood came to the jets with a lame duck coach. because he wasnt necessarily highly sought after coming out of the shitstorm in philly. and holy fuck if anyone thinks this fucking moron will ever be a head coach again they need their head examined. he was kotitesque in detroit while he was there... thats going to take some time and some actual success to overcome. rex will be gone at the end of the year, i will almost guarantee it.
Every head coach does this at some point or another. Jason Garret calls the offensive plays for Dallas,Lovie Smith called D plays, Sean Payton calls the offensive plays for the Saints and on down the list it isnt a big deal . Its a common trend around the league it isnt just Rex. Oh and the Great Bill Belichek calls the defensive plays as well
