I have not seen this question posed since the game ended and I was wondering about it. Why Billy Volek did not start is beyond me. Did he have a falling out or something with coach fisher or management? The outcome of the game might have been different if he had played.

He did have a falling out or something. He asked to be traded too, but they did not accomodate him yet.

That's is what I thought. It is so dumb on their part. Right now he gives the team the best shot of winning games.

For some reason this board has been in love with Volek who is a solid back up. He isn't in Collins league and is not a starting caliber QB.

    Per Footballguys.com:
Week 1 vs NYJ - Volek, who entered training camp as the starting quarterback, was supplanted by Kerry Collins and was inactive for this game.

He was inactive for the game! The Titans would rather have an imobile QB that does not know their offense start for them.

Volek was awful in preseason and camp, bad enough the team decided Kerry Collins will be better. I doubt they expected much from him in week 1, but with more of the playbook memorized, and a better feel for receivers etc he could be league average, more than Volek was going to be. Volek is 30 years old, and has only 10 starts and 24 games played in, Collins is 3 years older and has started 146 games, he put up a 77 rating 20 TDs and 12 INTs in 15 games for a terrible raiders team last year, essentially the same team we saw on monday night. He is clearly a better option for a team that just wants a veteran to fill the spot until Vince Young is ready.

Exactly! As soon as I found out they were throwing Collins out against us, I immediately penciled the Jets in for a win and went online to put some money on the underdog.

    Trade?

    ESPN Rumor Central:

    "Volek to the Chargers?
<Sep. 13> ESPN's Chris Mortensen suggests Volek should pack an extra bag or two when the Titans visit the Chargers this Sunday. He might be staying awhile.

Sources on both teams indicate that the Titans wanted to get this game out of the way before proceeding with a trade that would send the quarterback to the Chargers.

Volek began training camp as the Titans' starter, but was the team's No. 3 quarterback in Week 1. Titans coach Jeff Fisher reiterated that recently signed Kerry Collins will remain the starter with rookie Vince Young as the backup."

These discussions between Tennessee and San Diego could have been going on prior to the game with the Jets. If so, it is doubtful that Fisher would have risked injurying Volek.

Volek is currently the best QB on the Tennessee roster. I don't see how that can be argued. He's currently in the doghouse because of his actions, but based on QB ability, it's not really that close.

Volek is pretty freakin' terrible. He gets happy feet in the pocket, has limited mobility, and is not very accurate. He is a an adequate third stringer at best.

Without knowing all the facts, it is hard to say what has happened between Volek and Titans management. But due to recent actions it is pretty apparent that a parting of ways will happen. Which is probably what is best for both sides. My gut feeling tells me that Volek is fed up with his current status and wants out, and who knows what kind of reactions he had with management. Just look at the Titans handling of Steve McNair, and that tells me that they are pretty hard assed with the handling of players. While McNair handled it with class, who knows how Volek reacted.

Collins is a proven NFL starter who took a team to a SB. Volek doesn't compare in any way to him. I'm not a Collins fan but tell me what Volek has ever done?

Exactly. Volek's best games were Elvis Grbac Specials (EGSs are games in which very little defense is played throughout OR one team is trailing in the 4th quarter usually by 10 or more points and the defense allows the offense to take yards in exchange for time). He had a couple EGSs in 2004 and then shit the bed against Denver.
