Signing him this offseason would pretty much shore up our problems at OLB... We will deff have the money... We wouldn't have to waste a draft pick on an unknown, as we know what Orakpo is capable of... With Rex coaching him up, he has the talent to be a top 3 OLB in this league. This leaves those draft picks for other positions of need... Thoughts? How much do you think he will command in Free Agency? 10 million a year?
27 years old, large contract that would go into his 30s. Rather use that money for younger players - easily 10 mil / yr
Why do you think we will "definitely" have the money for Orakpo? We need to give Wilkerson his due, remember, and we also need offensive talent. Plus, Orakpo will make a lot in free agency because the team that gets him will have to out-bid for him.
The guy is just entering his prime though.. I feel like we could get production out of him for 5+ years.
There's no reason to pay Orakpo the money he wants. He's a nice player, but it's not like he's an all world pass rusher with the likes of DeMarcus Ware and such. You don't break the bank for a 'good' player, you break the bank for a 'great' player. This team needs help in so many other places right now.
OLB is a definitely a need especially after watching today's game. Orapko would be nice, but he's gonna want 8-10 mil a year. Jason worilds would be a younger cheaper option, and he really came on this year.
Seems as if a lot of people here don't actually watch games. There's no way in hell the Jets should him. He's very injury prone, and second of all he's not a speed rusher who demands a double team.
this, plus barnes is coming back, better to bargain hunt here and use resources on some offenes and retention, i.e. mo ,folk, howard
No one would say that OLB is an area where we are set. Even if we were happy with our starters, Pace isn't getting younger, Barnes hasn't proved that he can stay on the field, and Coples may serve us better as a backup DE or trade bait. With that being said, Orakpo is the A number 1 undisputed top free agent at the OLB position. A proven commodity at 28 years old will command a huge contract. Given that we have the best DL in the league we may not need to have an OLB as good as Orakpo to put the fear of God into Tom Brady. Here are the free agents available with their rank from the top 50 free agents: 7. Brian Orakpo WAS 28 years old 6'4" 257 lbs 11.0, 8.5, 9.0, 1.0, 10.0 sacks 23. Michael Bennett SEA 28 year old 6'4" 274 lbs 9.0, 4.0, 1.0, 1.0, 7.5 sacks 33. Jason Worilds PIT 27 years old 6'2 252 lbs 2.0, 3.0, 5.0 8.0 sacks 41. Anthony Spencer DAL 30 years old 6'3" 262 lbs 3.0, 1.5, 6.0, 5.0, 6.0, 11.0, 0.0 sacks Assuming Orakpo is not franchised, is he worth the premiom he would cost vs the other three options available in the deep end of the free agency pool?
I couldn't agree more with you, all we need is speed off the edge like a Worilds or Bennett. They also won't command nowhere near the money Orakpo would and can produce good numbers. I think the only big contract we should hand out is to big Mo who has earned his payday and is homegrown. The rest of our cap should be spent re signing guys or getting good young talents on the cheap.
The real test of how good our GM is going to be going forward will come in finding players who can improve this team without blowing a wade of cash on any 1 FA. Barnes was an example of that before the injury, Nelson would be one of those players, also. This team has a lot of holes to fill, this will be a very important strategy for us going into next season.
If the Jets take BPA the whole draft and we end up fielding Kerley, Hill, Salas, and Nelson next season, I'm going to hurl myself off a cliff.
If they sign 2 receivers and a TE in free agency. Then draft a receiver in round 1, what's wrong with drafting a OLB in round 2? Especially considering that its a position of need?
