Let's not coddle Winters. Many college OTs have been able to smoothly make the transition to OG. He's just struggling.
I have a sneaky suspicion that we might see Aboushi next Monday. It will be hard for the CS to watch that film and not be tempted to make a move. Winters was brutal.
You're right. He's a serviceable backup & that's about it. He wasn't the worst 3rd rounder ever drafted, but getting absolutely nothing out of Vlad Ducasse (61st overall in 2010 draft) put us in the position where we had to draft Winters. It also couldnt hurt if Idzik had gone after free agent OG Jon Asamoah this past offseason who ended up with the Atlanta Falcons.
The ups and downs of Brian Winters continues. He was solid week 1, but man his awful play on that INT changed the game. If you get beat that bad, you have to hold him or something.
He can't perform on the road. It's too big for him right now. He is capable of some nice move blocks especially in the running game.He needs to learn composure. This is still a very young player & he has made marked improvements in his game.We have to hope this isn't Ducasse all over again.
I seriously don't see any improvement in his run blocking either. It seems like he has strong upper body so he stands guys up, but a weak base that doesn't allow him to get any push. I know we run a zone concept, but still you gotta get something. His pass blocking is downright awful. Idk how he even played tackle at any point.
A few years ago I didnt want one, but if there is a Jonathon Cooper/Big G from Alabama whose name I forget, Jets have to go for it.
Damn we really have to hope Winters improves. There will be too many other needs to fill next off season to want to include LG to that list. Like RG, probably. Better hope Colon stays healthy or this OL is capable of totally imploding.
Based on the first two games, the Jets first three draft picks need to be offensive line, corner, and receiver. A lot of the Packers game falls on the coaching staff, but the offensive line was awful. Winters caused the interception that changed the momentum, and then the line couldn't open anything for the running backs.
According to Rex, Winters has a dislocated pinky finger. What's worse than a healthy Brian Winters? Injured Brian Winters.
No..he isn't a finished product. But I see how he played Tackle quite easily. He's a pretty good athlete in space & plays w/ a mean streak. He struggles w/ leverage & balance. Those are 2 things you can get away w/ at Tackle that you cannot at guard;especially left guard. Here's where I'm confused about Winters: Everything he has shown as well as what the Jets have done w/ him suggests he's a finesse "WCO/Zone" type guard..yet everything we saw from him at his senior bowl practices suggested he was a downhill mauler interior type. Where's the disconnect?
I'm sorry but I really don't see how tackles get away with not having balance and leverage. No offensive lineman in the NFL gets away with those things let alone a tackle. If he was good in space he wouldn't struggle with the inside move so bad and it doesn't even matter what moves defenders use to get to that spot. Maybe the Jets felt the same as you letting him pass set alone with D'Brickashaw multiple times by themselves one on one. Winters gets too flat footed to be put in space because he sets and lunges at the defenders OR anticipates that everyone in the league is going to flow to his outside. He needs to be stronger inside and protect the inside. It's one of the first things an offensive lineman is taught when they're young. Protect the inside at all costs and block the defender outside and make the quarterback recognize that.
If you have superior size & movement..yes you can often get by at Tackle in college against most opponents. It goes back to the simple mantra "Play your best lineman at Left Tackle".I would hope Winters was the best lineman during his time at Kent state..for the Jets sake. This aside, guard requires more suddenness, leverage & anchoring ability than does Tackle. It's within this area that Winters struggles. I agree that he needs to get stronger & he does lack phone booth skills. As for the "in space" compliments..I am referring to the running game. He pulls pretty well, gets to the 2nd level & can trap. Very smooth & he has long arms. And he has had some successful one on one pass sets. Though to your point wildly inconsistent.
Ducasse started tonight and looked like a professional football player. Is this the Slauson in the making?
He is still very young and obviously mistake prone. Those mistakes have come at critical times and yes, the same move to the inside beats him like a drum. How about we stop drafting projects early in the draft?
