Well he had David Lee who according to Rex is the best Qb coach in the NFL. But the play calling under Marty was perplexing. He didn't use the tight ends regularly either when they were productive. And even though Decker was their big ticket Wr he didn't use him like you would a no. 1. And remember that game when he ran the ball almost the entire half. And then when the opponent adjusted and stacked the line he still ran the ball.
That was the Miami game and the running attack was working like a gem in the first half. There was a PA where Miami D bit hard and Geno missed a wide open Harvin. That was the offense we should have ran all season. Geno has to hit that pass though for that offense to work. Also, Geno has to sell the run like Pennington use to with Martin.. The slight hesitation by the defensive is the bread and butter that opens up the passing game just enough to insert the dagger.
You don't run on basically every play. Something like almost 20 in a row. And then when they shut it down you still go with it. And Geno throws (at that time) something like 6 passes. In the second half the average yards per carry were more than cut in half and Marty still wouldn't call any passing plays even though they were giving him the short pass. And where was Rex the entire time. He's the head coach.
I don't disagree with any of this. If youre the OC of a weak QB team (not named Rodgers, Manning, Brady*, Luck) you have to feel the pulse of the game, you have to see what's happening on the field, the changes etc....you have to make 'Adjustments' accordingly/on the fly. MM/Rex were frighteningly terrible at that for the Offense. All that said Ivory only had ONE 20 carry game this season. He only had FOUR games with 15 or more carries (that is crazy). Powell only caught 11 passes all season. He only had 33 carries ALL SEASON (that is crazy). "Ground n' Pound" is laughable
Yeah one game he runs him on every play (even when it doesn't work). And then he underused the guy most of the season.
We've had 3 different OCs under Rex, and they were all hated and seemed to make retarded decisions. Seems to me it's more on Rex. I don't know what exactly went on behind the curtain, but based on the stuff I've read, I think Rex's emphasis on conservative running oriented offense messed with the OCs and their ability to run an offense. The constant running plays on first down that everyone and their mother saw coming, the wildcat, the scripted plays early on in games. I think this stuff also messed with Geno's head, he's definitely not a game manager type QB for a ground and pound offense.
We still need another WR or 2. Not so sure Harvin will or should be retained. I love Kerley but signing him was a mistake. We still need a QB, CBs, and a FS that can cover in space. Depending on what defense we are running next year, we may need a couple of LBs. The need for a TE and OL last year was debatable unless you are talking depth. RB was not a need last year but we will need to add one this year.
OL is probably most important need if we ever really want to bring in a "franchise" talent at the quarterback position. Ignoring the Oline again is ignoring another potential winning season. After OL is addressed pretty much the whole offense needs to be addressed, but the O line is first and it's not really close. Defense we need to address linebacker (players closest to the ball make the most plays.), then tighten up the secondary.
Sign Antone Smith. Dude had 5 TD's on 33 touches and most of them were from outside the redzone. Ridiculous that they didn't give him the ball more. Otherwise I'd go for Vereen and let Powell and CJ go.
Great job compiling this list...let me see if I can't narrow this down a little as to who I would think is, firstly...attainable and secondly...affordable... Just because we are going to have an assload of cap space doesn't me we pull a Raiders and over pay for anything.... Quarterback Mark Sanchez Brian Hoyer Christian Ponder Michael Vick Jake Locker Shaun Hill There simply is no way we can bring back Mark Sanchez...even if he IS probably the best F/A QB available for the amount we should spend. Locker has potential but he's another Sam Bradford...can he stay on the field? Shaun Hill simply doesn't get enough credit and I'm not so sure the Rams let him hit the street with the problems they have. I'm sort of "meh" on Hoyer...but, he would be a serviceable stop gap. I'm really fuckin' pissed off at Geno Smith right now. That son of a bitch shits the bed in so many games and then lays up a perfect game at the end...? IF he could EVER find some consistency what a steal that would be. Who knows...maybe we do need to exert some patience. It wasn't all that long ago that a normal time to wait for a QB to mature was 3-5 years. Running Backs DeMarco Murray (Pipe Dream) Agreed here... Justin Forsett Knowshon Moreno Mark Ingram Shane Vareen Ryan Matthews Darren McFadden Frank Gore I don't like the look of any of these guys...not that we need them. We did O.K. with the guys we had and, other than Johnson's age as a consideration, I'd bring all three back. What we had is no worse/better than what is on this list outside of Murray of which no one has a shot in hell of getting. This is wayyyy down on the list of priorities. Wide Receivers Dez Bryant (Pipe Dream) Demaryius Thomas Reggie Wayne Randall Cobb Michael Crabtree Jeremy Maclin There's some value here. Agreed that Bryant is a pipe dream....however, outside of Reggie Way (how old is this guy again?), I wouldn't kick any of these guys off our team. They all bring decent value. To be honest, I really like Crabtree's hands...but that's just me. Tight Ends Jermaine Gresham Owen Daniels Jordan Cameron Charles Clay Julius Thomas (Pipe Dream) Like the RB's, I don't think this is an area that requires a great deal of attention in FA. There are other greater concerns at this time. Offensive Lineman Doug Free Bryan Bulaga Michael Roos Stefen Wisiniewski Where's Iupati? Did I miss something...did he resign...is he a restricted FA? I'm not at a place where I can check. If he should be on this list then that is who I want. Bulaga and Wisiniewski wouldn't be bad either. Linebackers Lance Briggs Brooks Reed Justin Houston Jason Worilds Brandon Graham Malcolm Smith Brian Orakpo Brandon Spikes Rey Maualuga Rolando McClain David Harris Mason Foster Just going to highlight the guys I wouldn't mind bringing in. I also could be convinced to bring David Harris back...in fact, a little continuity would be a good thing. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie Darelle Revis Tramon Williams Brandon Flowers Byron Maxwell I'd take any of these guys as they would simply be complete upgrades over what we have right now. Of course, who we grab is dependent upon who the next defensive mind is running the show. Safeties Louis Delmas Devin McCourty Antrel Rolle Charles Woodson Will Allen I just read an article that Charles Woodson wants to play a couple more years. I went digging a bit and found out that the man had a remarkable year. I think he's actually growing younger...or, at least, it seems that way. If we do not go after any of the veterans at CB I'd be into bringing him in as a Veteran presence that the young kids could learn from. Other than that, I like our safeties. And once Pryor is actually put in his proper position we'll be more than set at Safety.
I'd try and pry Devin McCourty away from the Pats if possible. We got the location factor going for us. Stick him at FS and plug CP at SS.
PFF grades for every FA out now. Can only see overall grades, but still a very useful tool. Man, the QB market is even worse than it looks haha. Other than that, I'd like Orlando Franklin or Clint Boling for LG over Iupati. And perhaps the answer to the team's safety woes are... Dawan Landry and Jaiquawn Jarrett... https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/01/01/2015-free-agency-tracker/
Heck, you don't need PFF to tell you that. Won/Loss record alone...that or the injury report will tell you that the F/A offerings at the QB position suck this year...badly.
My top fa I want the jets to look at are Qb- want to trade for brock osweiler Wr- Dez < long shot Denarius < long shot Crabtree Ot- Bulaga(gb) G- M.iupati(sf) O.franklin (den) Cb- Chris culliver (sf) S Rahim moore (den) MLB- Rey maualuga Olb- J.houston-long shot Brooks reed And jpp if coaching staff thinks he can play outside lb
