Remember guys, for blocking purposes, Kellen Davis was brought in. He's easily the best blocking TE on the team. LOL @ those who think Cumby can actually block.
i saw a couple of the easy drops to be more of him turning before making the catch. Rookie mistakes, trying to do to much. Either way, very correctable. Its not like he has bad hands.
That's a better analysis than I gave for sure. It's a good thing that he's intent on making a play after catching the ball. For such a big slow guy he's definitely good after the catch.
I think you're being a little generous. I think he's a promising young player but I saw numerous drops where looked the ball in and still whiffed. One of the knocks on his scouting report from Texas Tech was that he dropped too many passes and his hands do somewhat concern me. Hopefully it's something he can work on and not an intrinsic flaw.
I don't think i was too generous. I said he doesn't have bad hands. Players with bad hands usually don't catch 100 balls on any level with bad hands. That doesn't mean he has great hands. As to the pictures, we don't see hia eyes. his lift for a split second and the ball will be on his body. Focus, lack of focus, call it what you want but its coachable, or more coachable than teaching to catch
Won't they both be on the field a lot together or does Gailey not use many 2 TE sets? Year 2 for a 2nd Round TE, you would hope Amaro is the #1 TE easily.
I saw one game of his vs. Mississippi State (tuned in to watch South Alabama QB Brandon Bridge). Sexton had 6 catches and showed athleticism but the Bulldogs put the wrap on the Jags offense overall with their considerably higher level of talent. Had a good junior year but tailed off his senior year (nagging ankle injury) which dropped his stock. Sexton did run the 2nd fastest 40 yd. for TEs at the combine. Strengths are his speed and YAC ability, weakness is--you guessed it--his blocking (Jets only list him in the 240 range, but he did run his 40 at the combine at 252 and word had it that he was 260 a month after the combine at the South Alabama pro day workout). Gil Brandt said he looked very good during positional drills and hadn't lost his speed with the added weight. NFL.com lists him as one of the top 5 UDFA signings.
I agree FJF...the guy also has a history and proved last year that he makes some very good catches. There are bad hands..and inconsistent hands..which he showed last year. You cant teach bad hands. The kid thought way too much last year...things will slow down as will the drops. I like him..especially in todays NFL. He has the prototypical, NFL 2015, tight end potential. He fits the era pretty well. Still alot to show..but potential? He screams of it...means a decent amount now but not all...we shall see. I like him.
I say Amaro wins even though hes still raw, but Cumberland is just pretty bad and he's had years to prove himself yet he hasn't.
If you watched his play you'll see that Cumby had too many totally missed blocks. Cost the QB extra hits during and after release.. IMLTHO drop him.
I have a lot of hope for Amaro and think he will have a breakout year. TEs generally don't have great statistical seasons their first year. Jimmy Graham, Tony Gonzalez, Dallas Clark and Jason Witten were all in the 30ish range for receptions and about 350 yards. Even Gronkowski only had about 40 receptions and 500 yards his rookie year. I'm not at all saying we should expect that type of player from Amaro, but just to show that some of the best still need a year or two to get their bearings in the NFL. That said, Amaro will be on the field more and in bigger situations than Cumberland, regardless who is the "starter".
Time to cut bait on cumberland. not a bad player just a really low ceiling. Amaro's is higher, Davis' is comparable and Saxton is the new project.
Can anyone upload the Amaro play vs. Dolphins where he caught the short pass on the sideline and then truck sticked the defender?
