We knew this thread was coming, might as well discuss it. Bleacher Report but still interesting - Matthew Stafford Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz and Speculation on Lions QB's Future Thoughts everyone?
I honestly think Luck may test free agency when his contract is up. The Jets should look for a vet qb.....this is definitely a topic for discussion. We have been pretty bad at developing rookie Qbs, but vets have done well here.
At what point though does the CS say to themselves "We need to give (said rookie/young QB) a shot?" Something has to eventually give to build upon youth, especially in at QB.
I personally don't think he'd do well here. I just don't think its in his DNA to play well in New York. I think he's better suited for a more laid back football city. Also has troubles with the weather so that falls in line with a southern city as well. Houston, Jacksonville, Miami, Atlanta..etc. those places he would do well at. I just don't see a soft "good ole' boy" like Stafford dusting himself off well here and bouncing back after struggling in a crucial road game in snowy Buffalo for example. I know its a strange metric but thats how I see it haha
He'd be a disaster. He was something like 3-32 against winning teams going into this season. We didn't like Sanchez...Stafford will get eaten alive.
Apparently whenever said Qb earns it. The player must possess leadership, understanding of the playbook/offense, understanding of supporting cast/playmakers; and has to have the hunger and desire to take the reins; and most importantly WIN. Nobody is going to give it to them, they just have to take it. And sometimes injuries help to give them that chance that they may have never earned on their own (see Brady). I think a good coach can identify starting caliber quarterback. I know a lot of fans are able to recognize the true starters versus the ones just acting as a starter.
Jets may have a bigger issue at the running back position. Ivory can't seem to eastablish himself as the feature back.
These QB's getting recycled is a troubling sign. Maybe Stafford could do very well in a better situation, but how much better of a situation do you need when most of your games are being played indoors and you've had one of the top WR's in the game the last 5 years? Better off playing the draft roulette and maybe hit in the 1 out of 100000 chance you come away with something elite.
So giving Sanchez four full years and Geno two full years isn't giving them a fair shake? I don't want Stafford. I'd prefer many quarterbacks in the league than him because he's regressed terribly. He used to be more of a gun slinger which you can live and die with but at least there's an upside. He'd run around for 5 seconds than toss bombs up to Calvin and used to create a lot of big plays. Now he's apprehensive and looks like he's over thinking everything not to mention that he's been hit and beaten up worse than any quarterback in the league. Maybe not sacked the most but go back and look at the hits he takes. While it's not his fault it can effect the mental side of a players game. Stay away from damaged goods. If he's reasonable though he can be an upgrade. It almost seems like guys like him and Kaepernick need to take a year off for the psyche.
Given the choice between Stafford and Cutler, I'd take Cutler on the proviso that Cutler learns how to stop being a gunslinger.
Better option than Kaep and RGIII. Just like most other situations shouldn't look to trade for but if he hits FA he is worth a look. Luck isn't going anywhere the idea of him testing the market is just ridiculous. Also if the Lions do get the #1 pick there might not be a QB worth taking. Nontheless, notable options this summer could be Kaep, RGIII, Cutler, Stafford, and Bradford which will bring many more wild threads to TGG.
Assuming these are truly options for us: Stafford > Cutler > Kaep > RGIII > Drafting more QBs Stafford is 5 years younger than Cutler, and his troubles can be blamed, in part, on a dumpster fire of an organization. Cutler is also a bit of a malcontent and I don't think Marshall left on the best of terms with his QB. Cutler is a pocket passer, which projects better than running QBs like Kaep and RGIII. Kaep is more durable than RGIII, and has a much bigger frame. We can't develop a franchise QB, so why bother wasting picks on the position except to fill out depth.
It's worth looking into for sure. I think he's an okay QB, better than what we have and are likely to get any other way so if you can improve your team at a key position, depending on the cost, why not?
