#Raiders have an agreement with G Kelechi Osemele, per @Rand_Getlin. This was evident last night, as it got too rich for #Vikings & #Jets That was tweeted by Ian rappoport a few minutes ago I just find this interesting because we were trying to sign a top 5 FA who would have demanded pretty big money for a guard I wonder if this paints a bigger picture of what we plan to do in free agency
Its entirely possible the Jets have interest in every single free agent out there, at least until the bidding gets out of their pre-determined range. Some free agents start above that range and some get there by way of bidding wars.
We are currently dead last in terms of available cap space. So its safe to say that anyone major that gets signed in the next week , we had zero chance of getting.
Most of the guys that get signed in the next week will be overpaid and will be contracts that the the team will want to get out of within two years. Macc was very smart last year in avoiding locking himself into bad long contracts. Thus, I'm not sure how we ended up in such a bad cap situation.
They will be overpaid for sure. Teams like the Jags, Raiders and Giants can afford to overpay pretty much any FA they want so that's hard to compete with. We don't have many bad contracts outside of Revis and Brick but I'm thinking that the backload on those deals plus Mangold's is the reason we are so up against the cap right now. 2 years ago those deals didn't seem too bad , but now when you have those 3 players in the top 5 on the team in salary , plus Marshall's deal that only a handful of people thought would go into year 2 , and also Decker making 8 mil. And the 15 mil Wilk franchise tag. That cap number shoots up in a hurry.
Agreed but that doesn't help us out during the first wave of free agency. If he's smart and lucky well get some guys that come with baggage or injury concerns on cheap prove it deals.
Revis, D'Brick and Mo Wilk eat up 30% of the cap. They're stuck with Revis the next 2 years. Mo Wilk likely gets traded which saves $15mm and D'Brick will have to re-structure or get cut.
The first wave of free agency is for suckers. We see it every year. Let that wave run through and plug the holes with the mid range players.
ah was just about to guess contract around 10M if the Raiders got him. wow, was even higher! that's the nature of these cap increases. I'm glad Mac was at least pressing for a guy like Osemele. He would have made a big difference, but we couldn't match a bidding war with Oakland (nor should we)..
can Oakland do us a solid and cut Austin Howard now? we can undo another Idzik mistake and put him back at RT.
Agreed to an extent. But to be totally handicapped by not being able to do anything , is a problem. The first wave of free agency is going to sweep up a few of our starters and maybe our starting QB.
Well said. And I believe this is where Mac will show his true talent as a scout. Let's hope he can deliver. Buy low, sell high(comp picks)
I think the Raiders are going to have him play LT which is intriguing. They also moved Austin Howard back to RT after being a G for the first few games with the Raiders. I don't anticipate a big splash for the Jets in FA. Hopefully we'll see some news soon, but man teams are throwing around crazy money. Kind of glad we aren't part of that.
yep the fact we were looking at Osemele makes me think the Jets viewed him as a T option. i agree, and think he'd have been a huge upgrade over either Breno or Winters......depending on how our draft went. surprised the Raiders are thinking LT though....i would've gone right side. guess they aren't interested in Penn anymore.
