Now since the biggest trade rumor here is Abe for Rivers, can we discuss how actually good Rivers is? I mean, we've only seen the guy in one game. I hear he didn't do that great but it was also his first football game in a long time and it was raining so I'd cut him a break on that. But is he a bust or what? I don't know anything of his college career except the Chargers traded Manning to get him.

Wish I could tell you, but no one really knows. I feel he would be better than Chad, but could he be another Brees once he gets a good handle on the offense? Drew tooks a few years but he is good now. Chad took a few years and if he hadn't been hurt over and over again he would have been good.

I say Rivers is a good fit and would be cheaper than drafting Cutler at #4. The Chargers already paid him the signing bonus and he is under contract.

Well, it was only one game, but from what I saw, some of his passes were floating. I even remember one where he threw across his body and the ball fell well short of the receiver. If a defender had been there, it was a TD all the way.

But again, it was only one game. I really have no idea how good he'll be.

You can't call him a bust or not a bust, it'd be a slight risk to get him because you don't really know what he'll give you, but he was the #4 pick in the draft (would've been #1 if the Chargers had stayed in that spot) so he obviously has a lot of potential. He's also knows Cotchery well, as he was his #1 WR in college.

He was picked 4th overall 2 years ago, can't be that bad. He's a young talent that we just have to take the risk on. How good he is, is a mystery right now. But he must be good if your picked 4th overall.

No one knows if he is a good NFL QB or not, but I liked him coming out of college. If he comes here, and knows he is the starting QB from day one, and is prepared as such, he can be a good QB for us I think. Of course, we need to give him an OL first.

The bad thing is he played in the ACC when they sucked. FSU was the only team in the league....it was pre Miami, VTech, BC.

I live in Charlotte, so I know a lot of NC State alumni....the thing they say most is he played against pansy ass teams, like Wake, Duke, NC, Clemson, etc. He only had one good game against FSU, although he was 5-0 in bowl games.

    Philip Rivers
    Position: Quarterback
    College: North Carolina State
    Height: 6-4
    Weight: 226
    Hometown: Athens, Ala.

Analysis | Agility | High School | Personal

    OVERVIEW
The second-leading passer in NCAA history with 13,484 career passing yards — breaking school and Atlantic Coast Conference records — he also set an NCAA record with 51 career starts at quarterback … Rivers finished second in NCAA history with 13,582 career yards of total offense … He tied for fifth in NCAA history with 95 career touchdown passes and also broke school and ACC career records for passing attempts (1,710), pass completions (1,147), touchdowns responsible for (112), 300-yard passing games (18) and 400-yard passing games (7) … Philip started all 51 games (including 2000-01 bowls) of his four years and threw for at least 100 yards in every contest while posting a 34-17 career record as the starter … He is the first quarterback in ACC history — and the seventh in the history of the NCAA — to throw for 3,000 yards in three different seasons … He completed 110 of 161 passes in four bowl games for 1,202 yards, 10 touchdowns, three interceptions and rushed for 65 yards … His jersey number 17 was retired before his last home game (Nov. 22, 2003 vs. Maryland) … The most decorated passer in school annals, he also excelled in the classroom, graduating with a degree in business (Dec. 18, 2003), four days before suiting up for the final time for the Wolfpack.
    ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a tall, linear build with adequate body thickness and good size for his position … Shows good arm strength and velocity … Smart athlete who makes proper judgments (rarely throws into traffic) … Has great poise and pocket presence; he will stand tall and deliver under pressure … Takes control in the huddle and is well-respected by his teammates … Displays above-average ball placement in the short-area passing game and throws a very catchable ball, knowing exactly when to zip the pigskin and when to show touch … Has a natural feel for when he needs to slide out of the pocket and avoid the pass rush … Always seems to be in sync with his receivers, doing an excellent job in timing his tosses and anticipating when to hit his targets in stride … Has a keen understanding of the offense, keeping his head on a swivel as he checks down the line … Vocal leader who works hard in the weight room and practices … Highly competitive type who is not afraid to "mix it up" when defenders get overaggressive … Has the body strength to fight off pressure and get free from the blitz … More comfortable in the short-to-intermediate passing game, displaying incredible accuracy … Not fast, but can buy time with his feet and maintains his accuracy throwing on the move (his precision allows him to squeeze the ball into tight areas) … Will need mechanical refinement, but much like Brett Favre, this kid is a flat-out winner.
Negatives: Won't ever hurt you by running with the ball, but has enough foot quickness and hip swerve to elude the rush and throw on the move … Needs to work on his foot quickness in his drops, but has made steady improvement in recent years … Throws the ball with a sidearm motion, but he can improvise and make plays with his creativity … Will struggle with his long tosses, as the ball will sail and hang on him (his best way to get the ball deep is through an awkward wind-up delivery) … His unorthodox style sees him keep the ball at his waist, displaying a low release, but he has good timing.

    AGILITY TESTS
    5.08 in the 40-yard dash … 375-pound bench press … 290-pound power clean … 33-inch vertical jump … 9-foot-8 broad jump … 32¼-inch arm length … 9¼-inch hands … Right-handed.
    HIGH SCHOOL
Attended Athens (Ala.) High, playing football for his father, coach Steve Rivers … Hit on 109 of 195 passes for 2,025 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior while also seeing action at free safety … Named Alabama player of the year … Graduated in December 1999 with a 3.7 grade-point average and enrolled at North Carolina State in time to compete in 2000 spring drills.
    PERSONAL
Graduated in December 2003 with a degree in business … Married his high school sweetheart; wife's name is Tiffany … Couple has a child, Halle, born on July 6, 2002 … Born Dec. 8, 1981 … Resides in Athens, Ala.

How anyone can make a statement about RIVERS career even though he has NOT had the opportunity to play is beyond me. How many of these same guys were critical of CHAD before he got his chance to play? FAIRNESS goes a long way!

    Two other good things:

    1) Reunites with coach, Schott.
    2) Reunites with college #1 WR, Cotchery.

"in colege he was a Stud. he did whatever he had to do to win. but as of right now 3 yrs later no one knows anymore accept the Chargers FO and our OC"

....hopefully L'il Shott knows talent...because I'm sure the Jets are listening to him one way or the other on Rivers....if he does believe in Rivers and the Jets want him, hopefully they're being coy and patiennt trying to work a trade out...Bradway probably would have given his right nut & 1st born already......

    The BIG question???

    He was a #4 pick.
He is already paid=cheap for us.
He has 3 years training=ready to go.

Would you trade our current #4 for him?

When you add up all the factors, he is a cheaper more experienced quarterback of the same caliber that we would get at #4, and since that abe trade is a pipe dream, this isn't a bad way to go...its something SD might actually consider.

Why do we care how good SD starting QB for next year is.. You guys hear one nonsensical rumor and run with it, ignoring all the facts. The facts are that Rivers is signed long term and Brees is about to be an unrestricted FA. If he goes unprotected by SD he is not going back there and we can forget about trading for Rivers..

The more I think about this the more I kind of like the idea. He may be unproven but he hasn't proved he can't do it either. We picked Chad in the first rd. but he sat for a while till we had to put him in and he did very good till....The fact that he hasn't started doesn't really say much about his abilities it just says that Drew was coming along and was playing better. If we give a previous #4 a shot after sitting and watching like Chad did maybe he will have something to prove. At least he hasn't been taking a beating the past couple of years.

Where was Ryan Leaf picked? I'm not saying Rivers is good or bad, because who really knows till he plays. However, you can't make the above statement.

I don't like his release at all and he looks like he has happy feet. Who knows what will happen in the future, but I don't think he's ready to start yet.

How can any one here state either way until he plays life NFL football. Rivers could be the next Marino or Ryan Leaf only time will tell. Some posters here write like he's the next coming of Marino. Until he's seen in a game all you have to judge him is his college Pedigree and his time on the Chargers bench
