That comes as no surprise, they actually fired Caldwell who did a better job for Patricia and ended up with egg on their face because they fell for the Belichick coaching tree fallacy that they would have same success as him. I’m watching the Michigan and Penn State game as breaking news came that Patricia and Quinn were fired, both announcers said their biggest mistake was firing Caldwell as he did nothing worthy of being fired.
Only a matter of time before Vince Wilfork calls the Johnsons and gives a glowing recommendation of Matt Patricia.
Bad year for Belichick. This is the second one of his disciples to be canned this year, and the Patriots are a smoking hot mess. I can't say that I'm shedding any tears for Belichick, O'Brien or Patricia, but how stupid would an owner have to be to hire a head coach from the Belichick coaching tree? As I typed "how stupid would an owner have to be," I had the same disturbing thought that is probably going through your mind right now.
And the longer we hold onto Gase for no apparent reason, the more nervous I get that he is going nowhere.
All Gase has to do is one game and he'll keep his job. Chris Johnson won't fire Gase unless he has absolutely has to.
Matt Patricia has been a terrible head coach in Detroit. 13-29-1 is pathetic. People shit on Jim Caldwell, but he had 3 winning seasons with the Lions and his losing season was only 7-9. 36-28 is looking might good right now.
Eric Bienemy will likely be the only candidate they interview. Patricia will be fine getting a DC coordinator job with some Patriot buddy associate somewhere or even back to NE. Quinn will have a rough time and rightfully so. He fired a successful African American HC and set the organization back 5 years. What a knucklehead.
Caldwell wasn't anything special. Why couldn't he just have fired a guy who may or may not have been good ? What's his skin color got to do with anything ?
The Lions may be one shitty franchise, but at least they know enough to get rid of a useless coach during the season and not wait until the end of the season...or worse...give him another season to once again prove how much he sucks.
Caldwell brought success to an organization that had none of it for years. I should have included the Max Kellerman Stephen A Smith discussion ESPN link in my post. The fact that Caldwell is a minority hire is a big deal for the NFL and the Rooney rule. Maybe I’m explaining badly but I think you get the point.
As Detroit coaches go, I thought Jim Schwartz did ok--he went from 2-14 to a playoff team in 2 years. I actually have him as a candidate for NYJ HC job. Although he's been a DC, his offense in Detroit went (ranks in yards) from 29,20, 9, 2, and 5.
Bumping this up. I think it's time for both Stafford and the Lions to part ways with each other. He's taken an absolute beating there (especially the last two years), he's made his money and the franchise needs to go in another direction. I don't know how the money would work out, but he's really perfect to go to New England.
