A little mathematical perspective as the Jets close in on only there 12th playoff season in 47 years.

In addition to the fact that getting in this year will equal the Jets best successful stretch of the 1981 -- 1986 era (4 playoffs in 6 years),
a win on Sunday drops the Jets playoffs-per-season frequency below 5 for the first time in their history.

Now while making the playoffs every 4 years certainly isn't satisfying--it's like waiting for the Olympics or the next Presidential election, it's much better than it has been throughout the Jets tortured history.

    Thru 1969: 2 trips in 10 years = 1 every 5 season
    The 1979: 2 trips in 20 years = 1 every 10 seasons
    Thru 1989: 6 trips in 30 years = 1 every 5 seasons
    Thru 1999: 8 trips in 40 years = 1 every 5 seasons
    Thru 2006: 12 trips in 47 years = 1 every 4 seasons (actually 3.91)

If Tangini can get us to the playoffs this year and the next 3, our average moves up to just over once every three years:

    Thru 2009: 15 trips in 50 years = 1 every 3.3 seasons

Might be nice to approach some of the playoff/season ratios that Dallas, Miami, Pittsburgh have given their fans through the years.

Man, I'm glad I was too young to remember the Jets in the 70s. Must have been brutal.

Wow, the pressure is already on - now we're talking about getting there four years in a row, something only one team managed to do from 2002-2005?

Yup. I started watching in 1974, didn't see a meaningful game until 1978, not a winning season or playoffs until 1981.

It can be done...the Cowboys made the playoffs every year but one from 1966 to 1983.

    From their website:

The Dallas Cowboys franchise is the most successful in the history of the National Football League. In their 40 years of existence, the Cowboys have 27 winning seasons (and 2 500 seasons), made the playoffs 26 times, won 18 division championships, and participated in eight of the 34 Super Bowls, winning 5 of them. Between 1966 and 1985, the Cowboys had 20 consecutive winning seasons.

    27 for 41 = 1 playoff year every 1.5 seasons. Sick!

Pre-salary cap. The NFL is a very different place now.
