Profootballtalk.com reports the Cardinals will name former Packers coach Mike Sherman as their next head coach.

Multiple league sources tell us that the Arizona Cardinals have selected Texans assistant Mike Sherman to be their next head coach. It's not known whether a contract has been finalized, but the word is that Sherman is getting the job.

We'd previously heard that the Cardinals were planning to go with an offensive coach, and that Sherman was the favorite.

The Cardinals were primarily attracted by his experience. He coached the Packers from 2000 through 2005, and also was the General Manager for several seasons.

No coach has been with the franchise for more than six seasons, and the team has won only one postseason game since the Truman administration.

Sherman is the third straight Cardinals coach having recent experience with an NFC team. His predecessor, Dennis Green, coached the Vikings for more than nine seasons, and the guy before Green, Dave McGinnis, had been the defensive coordinator in Chicago.

The Cardinals' latest string of hires doesn't include a former Lions coach, since even the Cardinals aren't that desperate.

I just heard the same thing from Sporting News Radio. They had brought him back for a second interview today, and they apparently liked what they saw.

I was thinking the same thing. Apparently they got over that momentary commitment to winning.

Mike Sherman got a raw deal in GB. Favre and the GM handcuffed him. They were forced to make that stupid QB pick when they had glaring needs elsewhere because Favre is too big of a jack ass to be straight with the team.

Sherman had a pretty good tenure with GB up until that point if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if he is the right choice for AZ because I feel like they need a more innovative offensive mind to exploit their strengths.

nothing like hiring another retread coach, except one that was actually less succesful at his last gig than the one they just fired.

    some teams will never learn.

Sherman was the only veteran coach that I wouldn't have been completely upset with hiring last year. He's a solid coach. With that said, I don't think he's a good fit for Arizona. I would have went with one of the more innovative offense minds given that talent. I think Norm Chow would've been a good fit, his offense would be great for that personnel.

his experience has mostly been on the offensive side of the ball (offensive line, etc.), yes.

Cardinals vice president Rod Graves said earlier this week that the team had reduced its list of candidates and would summon finalists for a second round of interviews. Houston Texans assistant head coach Mike Sherman, the former Green Bay Packers head coach, had his second interview with the Cardinals brass on Thursday but was not offered the job.

He's an above average offensive coach, at best.

Sherman isn't a great coach but he's way better than Denny Green.

Yeah I agree, but they could get way better then Sherman. The offensive side of the Cards is preety good, on the other hand the defense is terribile.

Ever heard of hiring a good young Offensive Coordinator. Worked wonders for us.
