I always like these picks because they show independence. Maybe they view him as a return man who can hopefully improve his catching technique. You can't teach THAT speed, but hopefully you can teach better catching
Perhaps the staff was blinded by blind speed? Seriously, there must be a reason they think he can succeed in the NFL. If the only problem is dropping, I think that can be worked on. I'd rather have that as a weakness than some other skills. But I see comments about poor routes, etc. just have to see him in camp.
WTF He drops balls and gets drafted? they probably have better receivers in the FCS either the Jets scouts know something we don’t knowbut this is really a bad selection and the first one I’ve noticed Lol
And this is why the panic was warranted when we left free agency with the worst WR room in the league. Through four rounds we still have the worst WR room in the league and half the guys in it are practice squad players
Interesting point, but if that’s the thinking, then I’d say its pretty awful draft management…you don’t use a 4th round pick on a return guy, not when we are fine there with Gipson or whomever else they find as undrafted players. I hate this pick a lot, and I REALLY wanted a WR, but using a 4th rounder on a WR with bad hands is just brutal. It’s Idzik-level brutal. Just an awful pick. I don’t think you can coach up bad hands honestly…and I certainly wouldn’t want to try doing it at the NFL level when we actually have serious needs at the receiver spot. As a #5 or #6 receiver with top end speed, fine I get it. But to use a 4th round pick on that is beyond bad draft management. Ugh…I desperately wanted a WR this draft, but to end up with an old kid who can’t catch is to me a brutal fail. I hate this pick. I really do.
I really don’t get that pick for someone that I don’t think would have been picked until the 7th round if that. I need them to tell us why they went that route. I mean I would rather a big fat DT there or LB
I’m still so unbelievably baffled by this pick. Usually when there’s a head scratcher like we made in the third round there are a bunch of redeeming qualities that you can read up on. There’s quite literally nothing redeeming about this guy other than he’s fast. 24 years old, can’t catch and did nothing to address a major need on the roster. The only way this is acceptable as if there’s something in the works for Olave, Jameson Williams, or they think someone is going to shake free after the draft.
I'm well aware that all these guys have warts, especially the later you go in the draft, but not being a good catcher of the football is kind of a big wart for a wide receiver.
some positive news about him: Smith had some inconsistent moments connecting with former quarterback Carson Beck — the two were sometimes not always on the same page. But Smith had a strong showing during the NFL draft evaluation process, at the Senior Bowl and at the NFL combine, leading many to believe his dropped passes were more of an outlier than a trend moving forward.
The same circus that’s going around claiming he was worthy of a first round grade. The same circus that claims racism as the reason he’s dropping. The same circus that can’t stop talking about him now. If he wasn’t a Sanders he’d be drafted in the 5th round or so where his talents place him and no one would know who he is.
