I don't think defenses will care what Engstrand's offense looks like. I think they will see the Jets as they always do, good running attack, poor passing attack, therefore defend against the run, make Fields beat you through the air. Of course, not every team will be able to execute this plan but the good ones will.
Really? Are we running RPO? Are we runjjng Wishbone? Are we running out of DET’s offensive set? It matters greatly, especially since we haven’t had a QB in this mold ever.
When Fields was on Chi and Pitt, how did opposing defenses play against him? Note that the Jets drafted the speedster WR in the 4th round in order to keep defenses honest. He can't catch so well, but opposing defenses will have to play for the deep ball.
Obviously I'm not a DC, but if I were, I would not concede anything. I would make the Jets prove they could beat me deep. After I get scorched a few times, then I would make the necessary adjustments. Or, if I'm later in the Jets schedule and I see they have a legitimate deep threat game going (and it doesn't have to be the guy they drafted in Rd 4, it could be Wilson or Gipson), then I'm going to deploy my defense to try to stop it. Defenses have been playing the Jets this way for years. That's why we have never been able to get a consistent running game going even with good RBs. When a team knows you have trouble throwing the ball, they can concentrate on stopping the run.
All good points. Stopping the run is USUALLY (not always, but 95%+) the defensive game plan of any team playing any team. We hear it all the time "Gotta stop the run first, make them one dimensional, then get after them". It will be Jets game plan to make it as hard as possible for the other team to shut down our run game. And that, as always, comes down to the Oline. in '09/10, we had the top rated Oline (run game) which made it really hard for defenses to stop our run game. We could stick with it the entire game. I really wish we had kept Becton. A 400 pound road grater is exactly what our run game could use on the right side. Oh well!
Gaining run yards on early downs will be critical. Our run game HAS to deliver 3rd and short, over and over. Getting stuffed for a loss on 1st down, then gaining a yard on 2nd down, leaving 3rd and long will kill a run game in an instant. 1st and 2nd down will be key to the season! We can't live on converting 3rd and long all day. I hope our new TE can seal the edge w/o getting flagged for holding, and i hope our new RT can actually dominate in the run game (not his strong suit, but he's young).
Regardless of QB, coach or offensive coordinator the Jets trot out, this feels like what us miserable fans have been watching the last 10+ years.
Our run game has been 3 yards and a cloud of dust. If we can move it up to 3-1/2 yards, we have a first down. Tune in.
Yes. If we're going to be a run-first team, we need to avg 4.0 to 4.2 ypc on 1st and 2nd down. Anything less will leave too many 3rd and longs, leading to too many 3 and outs.
