A lot of you weren't around when Woody stole Parcells from the Patriots waay back in the day. We were crawling out from under a 1-15 Kotite fiasco and Leon Hess knew time was running out both on his life and the Jet organization on whole. He hired Bill Parcells and his mandate was a simple one. Turn the team around from a laughing stock to a real NFL football team.. Sound familiar? Parcells came in and in two short years, turned the Jets into SB contenders. How did he do it? His way or the Highway was law. That applied to the coaches on the staff, the players on the roster as well. If it wasn't for Vinny's snapped achilles, we would have been in the SB in year 3. Fast forward to today. Aaron Glenn learned under Parcells among other places he's coached. He came in as the polar opposite of Bob Saleh and in the preseason, they had 100% attendance and 100% buy in. He told Rodgers to take a hike which took strength of conviction in what his vision is. He didn't give a fck if Rodgers didn't like it either. Made him pay his own way across to get fired. Talk about gangsta that was pure. He said if you cost us games? You're gone.. Gipson cost us a game, and he's gone. We all know Parcells would have bounced Gipson years ago but he was a favorite of Saleh . Point being, I'm getting deja vu vibes here. I'm feeling a distinct change in direction and attitude. Even Woody is staying the fck out of things and Brick had better not show up in the lockerroom with his crew. Suddenly, the New York Jets are growing up fast. It couldn't have happened at a better time. Glenn will get this team right. Its gonna be bloody, but its gonna happen. In the end, we'll all be thankful.. Edit: Hess hired Parcells.. (Thanks Stinky!)
Yeah only difference is Bill Parcells was a established coach and had alot of credibility and when he talked everyone listened. You also know Bill Parcells brought instant success and credibility to this franchise, Woody also trusted Parcells so much and gave Parcells so much respect that he let him be the Gm as well and let him do whatever he wants, I am not sure Woody is doing the same thing with Glenn Aaron Glenn and Woody has been meddling in the teams daily affairs ever since Parcells, and I am pretty sure Aaron Rodgers gone was as much as Woody's decision as it was Glenn's. Aaron Glenn is still raw and there will be growing pains unlike Parcells as we saw in game 1, but he claims Parcells is his mentor so hopefully he follows suit but the jury is still out, comparing him to Parcells is not right as Parcells was a established coach with superbowl rings and Aaron Glenn is a nobody right now trying to make his name in the league.
I dunno man.. Walking Gipson was pure Parcells. Handling the press like Glenn does is again, pure Parcells. He's more like Parcells than even He wants to admit. Time will tell but I'd rather see Glenn as a Parcells clone than Gase as Kotite II.
Yes He is 100% already better than Saleh and Gase(that's not saying much) and should be given some time to prove himself, but like I said Judging from Woody's past hires this can easily blow up. Woody is not a good judge of character so be very skeptical until he proves he can win here. Stephens was his guy(Gipson was Salehs guy) lets see how Stephens turns out.
I hope for the best, but if AG had the track record of Parcells of turning around laughingstock organizations I would be more optimistic. AG may very well prove to be a good, even great, HC, but it's going to take a little while to make that decision. I am more than willing to give him that time...
yeah…not quite apples to apples as Parcells was established and AG is a rookie. I do like that AG is a Parcells guy, and if he can be half the coach Parcells was that would be a good thing. He needs time to establish his team and system and culture, but like has been said, culture will come with wins. Without wins, culture won’t work. You can’t be a “my way or the highway” type coach if you don’t win…players will tune that out pretty quick. Right now, we are in the honeymoon period…AG has been a breath of fresh air, the no nonsense attitude was definitely needed, the work hard mentality definitely needed. All we need to do is start to win…
You can tell AG is a hard ass, in his press conferences, he can definitely shutdown the media, I just hope he isn't a Al Groh hard ass, and fizzle the team out like Al did, but we definitely need a no nonsense HC, put these guys on notice.
Well said. I'm crossing my fingers AG turns out to be even HALF the coach Parcells was. If that happens the Jets will be in a damn good position. @Cman69 , I feel you brother. The more we see an honest to goodness game plan and team effort, like we say last Sunday, the more my Poso-meter goes higher. Here's hopin'!
Parcells was indeed established when hired by the Jets, but he wasn't always; neither was Carroll, Shula or Lombardi - all those guys worked their way to success. Glenn is far from a "nobody" in the NFL but there's a reason why he gets so much respect in the league. He exhibited that in the past three days.
Woody is the reason both Parcells and Belichick left the Jets. Can you blame them? They knew he was an asshole and they were right! I hope to God he leaves Glenn alone and lets him do his job the way he sees fit.
Yeah good point…I wonder how those conversations went between Parcells, Belichick and Woody…clearly they both saw he’s an idiot because they both quit right then…
If he had so much respect in the league teams would of been pursuing him in the offseason over Ben Johnson, only thing that matters from Glenn now is wins(in those terms he hasn't won a game yet and chances are he won't win Sunday) and getting the Jets back to the playoffs otherwise he will be just another casualty of the Woody Johnson 1st time rookie head coach hiring tree.
Exactly that's why hiring 1st time rookie head coaches is a crapshoot and after trying for so long and failing miserably the Jets should of tried something different. But now we are stuck figuring out if Glenn can coach or not, and we won't know for years.
Yeah we will see…for me, I loved AG as a player for us, but I was not super thrilled with us hiring yet another rookie DC as HC and pairing him with yet another rookie GM. Feels like we’ve just done this over and over and over and it’s not worked outside of a couple of good years with Rex, but even then, we keep hiring rookie DC’s and then wonder why our offense always sucks, why we can’t develop any young drafted QBs etc. That being said, what’s done is done and I hope that AG can be the right choice. I do think that by the end of the year, we should have a good feeling one way or the other… I always say that Great doesn’t take a long time to show up…Parcells sucked his first year but was a championship coach within what, like 4 years? 3 years? Something like that. I think if we end this year on an upswing, playing tough, if our OC continues to show he knows how to play to his offenses’ strengths, we’ll feel good about this regime. We’ll see…but as it’s already done, we have no choice but to watch and hope…
You are quite wrong - Glenn was pursued by eight teams and took interviews with four of them; It looks like Johnson only had four teams looking at him. I also disagree about the Jets needing to win this year. This is the year to set the team up for success in the future. I have said since the changeover that the win count this season is secondary to changing the way the team operates. And nobody "would of" done anything. If you're going to use a phrase in almost every post you make, at least get it right - it's ignorant and annoying.
