read the article I posted. Campbell moved him to TEs because he wanted him to do something he hadn’t done to challenge him. The whole philosophy was you have to be uncomfortable before you can be successful. And that article also talks about what he did for game prep. Ben Johnson also shouted him out for coming up with play designs. Of course it could be a flop but I posted that article to try and head it off at the pass. Didn’t work
I read it before I posted lol, it's a Lions fluff piece they did as a series for highlighting staff that no ones heard of. Doesn't change the fact he was passed over and sent to a different position, it even says he was disappointed in the article.
LOL. If there is one thing more depressing than the on going state of this dysfunctional Jets organization, is the massive amount of negativity from the fan base after every move made so far. It’s brutal, somehow Twitter which is absolute cesspool of humanity has become more of a place for competent discussion. you can’t discuss anything here unless you specify three terrible negative things first and god forbid you insinuate something might work.
It's really 2-3 people who take hours out of their day to write about how awful Glenn or Woody are (never the players) and they do so in every thread or anytime someone posts a shred of optimism... hell, even a negative thread that's not about Glenn or Woody. I always want the jets to win, but a little bit more this year.
Of course it is a fluff piece! Same as Ben Johnson saying some good things about Ryan, but when he became a HC he did not exactly offer him a positional coach job. But while Campbell passed him for a promotion over someone else, Campbell liked him enough to keep on the staff as an assistant. He fired some people too on offense, like Morton, but kept Seth. At the same time, who do you think we are going to get as a positional coach/passing coordinator for likely a 1 year stint? Either someone out of a job or an assistant, and a lot of assistants from good teams would not even want to come here. Detroit offense may not be the same without the master Ben, as you pointed out, but it is still #5 in the NFL. Seth might be the best option we could have had. Young up and coming assistant out of Detroit to compliment old Reich, familiar with Ben Johnson type offense that Reich likely wants to implement. Passing coordinator is same level as position coach (a lot of time a position coach does passing duty as well in addition to his current responsibility) and while it would have been nice to keep Tanner at that role, it's completely understandable he did not like the demotion and left. We got the next best thing: a young assistant from Detroit to compliment the older OC and help install Detroit style offense. Speaking of Tanner and Ben Johnson btw, I just realized Chicago still has OC opening unfulfilled. And Ben did not reach out to Tanner even for an interview. That now makes 3 HCs that knew him very well, had an opening when he had no better offers, and passed up on him as their OC: Campbell, Johnson, and Glenn. Last year Johnson's opening did not include play calling, while the Jets one did, but this time Tanner settled for a lot less than an even non play calling OC opening Ben had. So, while replacing Tanner with with Reich may have been a gamble, at this point I am not so sure it was a wrong move. I probably still would have kept Tanner, but it is not an obvious call. Glenn may turn out to be right on replacing him. He is certainly trying something different, and something that does now look like a solid plan. Not sure if it will work, but given he was not going to resign and lose 40 mil, he appears to be giving his best shot here to make it work.
It's not a doctrine, it is a likely scenario that a smart person understands. They know AG is on a hot seat after the season we just had, and a 1 year stint is a strong possibility. It makes it harder to find good coaches, but not impossible.
There were a couple of people who expressed concern over the fact Campbell didn't promote Ryan, which prompted above responses. How is this about Glenn or Woody in any way? I personally like this move, but why is everyone supposed to be ecstatic about it? These were valid concerns.
If it was bad news, it would be "see what Ben Johnson said about him. Clearly not a good sign." Because the difference between the article having merit or not, to a select few, is if its negative or not. Not fooling at this point, it's been he same drum beat for about 4 months. Hell, you specifically are looking at other teams and then making it a jets negative their old coaches weren't interviewed or hired for lateral roles. In a single post you net negative the hiring of Tanner to the jets because Johnson didn't consider him for a lateral OC move, then also say in the end you probably would have kept tanner. That's called hedging your bets.
There are no bets for me to hedge. I don't feel strongly about Tanner. I thought he did a C+ job, maybe incomplete, and would have kept him for that reason, since others did even worse and it is hard to bring someone good in. Generally though I feel Tanner is overrated here by some, and I am not upset with Reich replacing him. Is it OK to have a position where it was a tough call I probably would not have made, but I understand and give Glenn credit for trying something different? Am I supposed to either love or hate him?
No, this has been going on since the season ended and has little to do with the last expressed concern, which like the rest of the moves, has encountered far more negative takes than positive. Point in fact, the bashing to both AG and Woody permeates every single event, and when a positive input is provided by any one is faced with more criticism of negativity that anything else. No one here is ecstatic, much to the contrary, concerns abound, but the bashing on both Woody and AG gets kind of old and counterproductive and provides zero solution.
Like I keep saying....Hackett v2. Who like Tanner is still getting jobs in the league for reasons that don't help a team, like the NYJ, who are in dire need of something more then a likeable personality. Regardless of any similar and arguable "hiring more Detroit guys that are not Ben Johnson" concerns I can't bring myself to hate on Rex's kid though. On the off chance he amounts to something noteworthy in this league I'd like the idea of it being here, and so that gets a default/biased pass from me regardless.
