I believe he will be a part time player that will help develop Arvell Reese or David Bailey. The guaranteed money over two years is minimal for a productive LB, another good locker room guy, with just enough gas in the tank to help team out defensively. I don’t like his age but I wouldn’t surprise me if this will be his last NFL stop.
I continue to be baffled by the conclusions people are drawing based on literally nothing but age. Please explain how a dude who played 98% of the snaps last year, was top 10 in tackles and PFF's 10th ranked LB is going to be a part time player.
I don’t about part time player, I just think 37 is old for pretty much any positional player. There are some who last that long, but most decline quickly as they age. I get he played all the snaps last year, but we are not getting last year’s player, we are getting next year’s player, a year older. He may very well continue next year and I hope he does, but I think questioning a 37 year old player who has to run and cover RBs and TEs is a valid question. Not that hard to understand why people would question it. I expect he’ll do pretty well next year, so personally I’m ok with it, but I do also recognize that it has the potential to blow up badly just due to the guy’s age.
Because they get blindsided about age and not even look at performance. It's time to lfocus at his production last year and be reminded who in our team was close to that, never mind the leadership element that is desperately needed. We are getting not just one but possibly two LB in the draft and sure as hell a guy like Davis can set the example for them and help develop.
I guess old man Davis isn't a bad fallback plan from Anzalone, but they will need to address that position in the draft this year if not next. The Jets even get their own players after their prime
Trying to think of another example of a guy with 3 separate Jets tenures. 2 is easy. 3 is much harder. Maybe Laverneous (sp?) Coles? any others
No no...don't get me wrong...the player I'm fine with. Watched a couple NO games he was alright. It's just, at that position, the door closes FAST. He could make 100+ tackles the next 2 years or not see the field the next 2 years. LB is like RB. One minute they are a go and the next they go on "Injured Reserve" with a nose bleed.
I predict two solid seasons here, then maybe to a west coast team for a couple years, then back to the Jets for a long stint as a part-timer, then signed by a Florida team for a season or two, and then one final three-year contract with the Jets at age 47.
I recall Coles being on Hard Knocks in 2010 trying to make the team (this would have been his 3rd time), but he got released in training camp......
He could hit the wall any moment. It's a risky signing. That being said I highly doubt they're putting all their eggs in his basket they'll be looking to drafta young LB or two in the draft. Right?
In addition to be a leader, he needs to be able to play well this year and ideally even next year as we guaranteed 4 mil of the next year too. You don't get 15 mil guaranteed just for leadership qualities, he is expected to deliver the goods at 37 and perhaps at 38 too.
