I was thinking them picking up that extra back end 1st might potentially up the chance we feel some greater need to reach for Simpson at 16 (if we indeed end up with a serious interest there).
With Malik Willis on the hook for almost $30 mil next year I can’t imagine the Dolphins are taking a QB in round 1.
Denzel Boston not running the 40 at either the combine or Washington’s pro day is a pretty big red flag…
yeah just saw that...wow they are really tearing it down...Waddle is a guy you keep for a rebuild...but we see it time and time again...the new GM comes in and trades away whatever good players he can to get picks and build HIS team, because, you know, it's impossible to admit that hey, maybe the last guy actually did make some good picks...so ego for sure is part of it, but probably also the more pragmatic answer is that the new GM gets to buy himself some time by trading away good players and rebuilding. I don't know, if I were a Miami fan I'd be pretty pissed off at trading a very good WR for the 30th overall pick and a 3rd rounder which is also probably late in the round, and then they swapped 4th rounders. Not quite the haul that Mougey got for our star players, so in comparison, I'd say Mougey made out much better.
I don't think Tate or Lemon will be there at 16...Miami could very well grab one of those guys especially now after the Waddle move...if we want either of those guys we would have to trade up...and I don't think we can afford to trade up...we are likely looking at the 3rd or 4th best option at WR I think. I also expect there to be a run on WR maybe mid-round 1...I think Lemon and Tate go early, then expect a run so I'm not sure we can stay put at 33 and hope one drops really...maybe a more realistic move is to either take our choice at 16 or if there are still a few guys maybe drop back a few spots...but WR's always get a run in today's passing league...
If Mason Taylor ever lives up to some of his advanced billing, that would address some of the intermediate routes that a slot would normally handle. I think Surratt in the 2nd round at 33 can fill that bigger, deep ball receiver prototype while allowing them to stack the D even more at 16.
I think I might be ok trading up for Tate. Or trading out of 2 if I'm fairly certain I could still get him.
If they don't sign a vet WR, which it's not too late to do, I might double-dip at 16 and then 33 or 44. Curious what some of the draftniks think of Omar Cooper. I've increasingly seen him ranked closer to the middle of the first round. Curious if he'd be a target at 16 or in a trade down from there.
I dig Cooper. Jeremiah actually has us taking him at 16 in his latest mock. That’s way too high and I’d be pretty bummed by that but if he’s there at 33 I’d have no problem taking him. Size is a concern, but he can play inside and outside. I’d honestly prefer Surratt there but wouldn’t be upset going Cooper if that’s the best WR available at 33
I know. I say this with appreciation and with no respect, but you’ve been very rigid with players that you want the Jets to draft and at what spot. I think there are multiple ways to build a good team and not fuck this draft up. Justin Jefferson & Jordan Addison are two receivers with the same skillset and body type (Nailor as a #3). They work great together. The Packers entire receiving core is filled with players that have the same speed package and body type and it works. On the contrary, the Rams essentially play with 2 alpha physical X-receivers and 3 tight ends. There are a lot of ways to build a good offensive structure.
If the Jets ever drafted some complete project like Simpson or any other QB not named Mendoza in the first 3 rounds of this draft, then I will move Mougey firmly to the hot seat. This draft, more than ever, isn't about projects. It's about Year 1 contributors. This year should be upgrading the talent on the roster and 2027 is where you get the potential franchise QB that will have some pieces around him.
Simpson just seems like his career ends up like Sam Bradford at best. Maybe somewhere between him and Christian Ponder? I don’t think he’ll turn the ball over a lot because he’s smart. But I don’t think he’ll make many plays in the money zones that’s the 12-15 yard range and beyond.
The last few years have shown that the 40 isn't really all that important for WR's as it doesn't show anything regarding route running or getting open, but it is interesting. Maybe it starts a trend or maybe he's slow AF lol
