LB Joey Porter have reached agreement on a five-year, $32.5 million deal that includes $20 million worth of guaranteed money. - NFl. com LB Adalius Thomas. Has signed with New England for five years and $35.00 million, between 15 - 20 million guaranteed. - The Boston globe The patriots also front loaded the contract so Thomas will never see the back end of the deal. The cap hits are minuscule. 3.4 million, $5.4 million, $6.4 million, $9.4 million, $10.4 million. Since the deal is "front loaded" the last years 2 years of the deal are virtually meaningless... As for the stats, go to nfl.com, and look at Porter and Thomas's stats. Porter has been on the decline for years, While Thomas has been on the rise. Thomas had 11 sacks last year, Porter had 7. They are both 29 years old. Thomas brings the ability to play 5 defensive positions, WELL. Not only that, his charector has been hailed as one of the best in the game. Not a loud mouth that no one likes, a.k.a Joey Porter. Thomas is bigger, faster, stronger and way more versatile. Given the extreme amount of cap space the patriots had, and the ability Thomas had to make 9 million plus somewhere else, this was a great pick up for them. Thomas behind that front three is going to be very effective. Thomas has yet to show his best, Porter has already shown his best and started to fall. Thomas in the hands of Belichick will do big things for them. Spin it anyway you like, those are facts. Joey Porter brings name recognition. That's why he's getting more. It's dumb but it's part of a player's value.
...I'm not seeing the decline in Porter's numbers? Not saying I wanted him or even think he'll be all that good, but nothing in his numbers indicate serious decline. He may just be starting to decline physically is all.
Look at the years from 2000 - 2002. After that he dropped off with the exception of 2005. Porter cannot play 5 defensive positions well. 3/4 or 4/3, it dont matter. Thomas is effective in both.Porter is also much less versitile. I am not saying Porter is a bad player, just not as good as Thomas. Porter has a attitude probem and has been involved in a few "issues" My point was the patriots got a much more versitile player for at most equal money. This thread was to some members trying to claim the dolphins made out better then the patriots in the linebacker signings. Someone said they got porter for 10 million less, lol. Which is obviously incorrect. Porter is getting 32 million, with 20 of that guaranteed. Thomas is getting between 15 and 20 guaranteed. Those numbers are from credible sources, not rumors. They got a bigger, faster, more versitile player for less or equal to Porter. Statistically Thomas is on the upswing, and I feel we have yet to see the best off him. Either way it does not matter, the deal is frontloaded... The cap hits are miniscule, and structred so the last two years are virtually meaningless.Basically he is getting payed for his best years, and if he drops off there is cap hits. Behind the best front 3 in football, he will thrive. Considering the fact Thomas could have played for the 49's for 9 million a year, this was a great pick up for them.
How is it "far better" when they both got the same number of guaranteed dollars and you don't know Porter's contract figures. When either gets released / restructured, the unpaid portion of their signing or guaranteed roster bonus (Thomas has both) will be accelerrated to the current cap year. So, the difference is pretty much neglible.
We get it, you love the Pats and Adalius Thomas but Thomas got $20-22 mil in guaranteed money. I have seen anywhere from $20-22 mil. The $15-20 mil was the initla report just as today's intial report on Porter was $12 mil.
Joey Porter is going to get 20 million guaranteed as off 15 sec ago on nfl.com. I want to see the link of Thomas getting over 20. All reports including the most recent ones, have him at 20. The globe has him at 15 - 20. Btw, my intent was not to insult you in the previous posts. I appologize. Dolphins agree to five-year deal with LB Porter NFL.com wire reports MIAMI (March 6, 2007) -- Joey Porter has agreed to a five-year, $32 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, making the former second-team All-Pro linebacker the first marquee player to join the club during this free agent period. Porter is guaranteed $20 million in the deal, which was agreed to late March 5, according to a person with knowledge of the discussion who requested anonymity because Porter has not yet passed his physical and the contract may not be signed until March 7 or 8.
Please look at what I say objectivley. I say this is a much better deal for several reason. Over the last three years Thomas has been the better player then Porter and shown he is on the upswing. However since 2002 Porter has been on the downswing. Thomas is much more versitile and can play all over the field. Porter is smaller, slower and less versitile. He has had several issues off the field, and his production is down. The patriots had a ton of cap space and are at the moment contenders. They had a big hole at lb and they filled it with the best player they could get. A player perfect for belichicks Scheme really. The fact Thomas could have made 9 million a season and went to NE to make less mean something. The patriots 20 million is going to go a lot farther then the Dolphins 20 million will. Not only is Thomas ( as off now) the better player, he could help them over the top. If they burn a first rounder on a guy like Patrick Willis they have the position totally reloaded. Unless you think the Dolphins will be heading to the sb this year. Porter is a good player, but Thomas is more versitile. The only place I have seen people bashing Thomas is on this site. Every patsies hating nfl analyst has this as a great deal. With that sceme and those players I cannot think of a better guy to bring in. As a football fan, and former player I have to agree. It was a very good move. Thomas is a very good player and brings a lot to the table they where missing at the lb position.
I think it is a great deal for the Pats and A.Thomas is a better player than Porter at this point. However, you titled the thread "Thomas FAR better deal than Porter" and then proceed to spend the first paragraph talking about how it is a better contract. While I think Porter has lost "half a step", I don't think, like you, he peaked at 24. I don't think he taking less money means anything. He gave up a few million because he didn't want to live on the west coast...it's that simple.
It's a what have you done for me lately league, porter struggles coming off a SB year and he's lost a stp or 2 and is done while thomas plays his best(still nowhere near Porter's pre '06 level) and he's now great. It amazes me how quickly we make players stars and toss other players to the trash. The deals are similar, when first reported Porter was getting $12 mil guaranteed it was a slam dunk the Miami deal was better but obviously now they are close but I'd still rather have Porter b/c he does more than just play good football. He's a leader, an emotional leader. I think BOTH teams overpaid for them but I'd rather take Porter b/c he brings more to the table than just his play.
