NFL.com and the Houston Chronicle report that the Texans will acquire QB Matt Schaub from the Falcons for a second-round pick by the end of Wednesday. There may be other compensation involved. Schaub, a restricted free agent, will probably sign a new deal with Houston and be the favorite to win Houston's starting job over Sage Rosenfels. It would free up Houston to deal David Carr. Schaub is somewhat mobile and knows the West Coast offense, so he's a fine fit with Gary Kubiak. This will make one less team interested in drafting a first-round QB.
Matt Shaub traded to Houston Falcons to trade QB Schaub to Texans Click here to find out more! Adam Schefter By Adam Schefter NFL Analyst Adam Schefter's "Around the League" reports and commentaries can be seen regularly on NFL Total Access. (March 21, 2007) -- A trade that has been speculated on for over a year is now completed. By day's end, the Atlanta Falcons will trade backup quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans, according to NFL sources. The Texans will surrender a second-round draft pick, and there could be other compensation involved. The trade has massive ramifications. The Texans have their quarterback of the future, which David Carr no longer is. The Falcons are reaffirming their faith in Michael Vick, who now also needs a new backup. And the Texans are out of the Brady Quinn derby, leaving the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins as possible landing spots. The trade, once officially completed, validates the Falcons' commitment to Vick, whom new Atlanta head coach Bobby Petrino told the first time they met, "You're my guy." Since then, Petrino and Vick have been working together closely on an almost daily basis, prepping for the coming season. The Falcons, who quietly had been entertaining offers for Schaub this offseason, had tendered their backup quarterback a $2 million offer, meaning that any team that signed him to an offer sheet would have to surrender first- and third-round draft choices to the Falcons. Of course, the Falcons also could always trade Schaub, and that is the course of action the team has pursued. The Texans will be acquiring a quarterback that has thrown only 161 career passes, 81 of which were completed, with six touchdown passes and six interceptions. But Schaub long has been considered a quarterback worthy of starting, and he was the top bargaining chip the Falcons have. Now they've decided to cash it in.
I like Shaub, and I think he'll be a very good starter. Of course, he's got to add some meat on him because he's going to get an ass kicking behind that line. I really hope the Texans do something for their QBs instead of blaming them for getting sacked and the team sucking. I guess its some crazy Texas logic, but they really seem so non-chalant about it. Anyway, I hope Carr ends up in a nice situation for him (Chiefs, Eagles, etc.) and shows the league what he's got. That guys going to be very good for someone.
wow, last year I would have gladly given up our 2nd 1st or 2nd for Shaub. THis year, Atlanta takes Houston's 2nd rounder. I hate Atlanta
Everyone = Carr if they're playing for the Texans. They fail to realize that its not the QBs fault that they suck...when they do maybe things'll change...
This is a good pickup. Either Petrino really thinks he can make something out of Vick, or he's going with a no excuses approach. He's supposedly going to allow him to make adjustments at the line this year. If Vick falters, it won't be because the coaching staff was trying to sabotage him for Schaub, or because they weren't letting him be Mike, and then Petrino can get a real quarterback in there. This is a sensible move for Houston. Ahman Green, though overpriced, and Schaub, will be very solid. What's the status of Domanick Davis? -X-
In exchange for Matt Schaub, FoxSports.com reports that Houston will send a 2007 second-round pick, a 2008 second-round pick, and swap positions (No. 8 for No. 10) in the first round of this year's draft.
wow - when i thought it was just a 2nd round pick, i figured fair deal for all. but in that light I see McKay is a hustler - thats way to much for an unproven QB especially considering thier issues with OL and the QB's coming out this year
This is amazing. I can't believe Schaub is bringing mid first round value. Houston got hustled, unless the 2008 pick is conditional.
