Ihedigbo I've seen play, and he was pretty impressive. Granted, it was at a D1AA level, but he was a good player and pretty firey. I remember drunkenly heckling him at Villanova for shoving one of our players, though my memory is a little foggy. Pellot-Rosa I've seen play a lot....only not football...
By the way, didn't we promise Peters he would be the only new safety into camp? Because Ihebdigo is a safety...
From the Jets web page... The New York Jets have announced the signing of five players who participated in rookie minicamp as tryout players and announced the release of four players. The announcements were made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. The five players signed were DB James Ihedigbo, CB Rayshaun Kizer, LB Jared Newberry, WR Jesse Pellot-Rosa and WR Renard Stevens. The four players released were DB Caleb Hendrix, DE Matt King, WR Dustin Osborn and LB Mark Zalewski. Ihedigbo (6'1", 202) was a three-year starter at UMass and served as his team’s captain in 2006. He finished his career with 251 tackles (165 solo), 12.5 sacks, eight interceptions and 19 passes defensed. He was named a Walter Camp All-American, College Sporting News All-Star and Atlantic 10 first-team DB his senior season. Kizer (5'9", 185) was a three-year starter at cornerback at NAIA Walsh University in Ohio. He finished his career with 12 interceptions, third-best in school history. The All-Mid-States Football Association Mideast selection picked off five passes his senior season, including two that he returned for touchdowns. Newberry (6'2", 235) was selected in the sixth round (183rd overall) by the Redskins in the 2005 draft but was cut during camp. He spent time on the Patriots’ and Titans’ practice squads in 2005 and the 49ers’ practice squad in 2006. Newberry played for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europa in 2006 and started 10 games in helping the Galaxy to a World Bowl victory. He is a former Stanford University walk-on who became a co-captain his senior season and finished with 112 tackles, six sacks and two interceptions. Pellot-Rosa (6'4", 195) is a former high school wide receiver who was recruited for football at Tennessee, Alabama and Virginia before choosing basketball at Virginia Commonwealth. He averaged 13.3 points per game and shot better than 42 percent from three-point range in leading VCU to a Colonial Athletic Association title, and he scored 14 points in the first-round upset of Duke in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Stevens (6'4", 215) began his career at Marshall before transferring to Division II West Liberty State in West Virginia. He finished his collegiate career with 140 catches for 1,751 yards (12.5-yard average) and 19 touchdowns. He also recorded two TD receptions in the sixth annual East Coast Bowl for Division II All-Stars.
Ithink we just promised him we wouldn't DRAFT a safety if he would commit to the jets if he went undrafted...or something like that.
pro day info: Ihedigbo (6-0 5/8, 211) ran the 40 in 4.77 and 4.77 seconds. He also notched a 35-inch vertical, a 9-foot broad jump, a 4.24 short shuttle, a 7.12 three-cone drill and 15 bench presses. Kizer (5-9 1/8, 185) ran the 40 in 4.51 and 4.53 seconds. He also notched a 35?-inch vertical, a 10-foot broad, a 4.09 short shuttle, a 6.73 three-cone drill and 15 bench presses. Kizer made a few NAIA All-American teams. (Walsh University is an NAIA program in North Canton, Ohio.) Stevens (6-4?, 218 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.74 and 4.77. He also had a 30-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-9 long jump, 4.43 short shuttle, 7.20 three-cone drill and 13 bench presses. newberry ran a 4.72 40 on his pro day in 2005 and scored a 30 on his wonderlic. according to ny daily news.com" Pellot-Rosa who is 6-4 said he has a 34-inch vertical jump and a 4.7 time in the 40, which isn’t very quick for a receiver.
Pellot-Rosa was a good basketball player for Virginia Commonwealth. He was fast and explosive and can really jump. Played a good game this past year vs Duke in the NCAA Tournament.
this guy is a basketball player, going to GMU i saw him play a lot against us, a great athlet but i wonder what kind of speed he would have on the field.
Only way you are a good Wideout and run a 4.7 is if you use your body and run great routes....hopefully one of them is decent.
he may run a 4.7 40, but I bet he's got a real nice 10 yard split. Playing basketball, I just think he probably has a great short burst. Just a guess, though.
I go to U-Mass and am a Jets fan. I have never missed a home college game and have therefore seen Ihedigbo play a number of times. I have also played basketball against him... Here is what I will say: He has a great body (no homo). He looks like he was chiseled from a block of stone. Hard to describe... but I doubt he has an ounze of fat on his body. Very nice athlete and probably plays faster then his 40 time (pretty slow for a safety) He is a very good leader... and was the leader of the defense this year which was one of the best in the country at our level. Also clearly the leader of his bball team... He walked on in college. In terms of scouting: He is a phenomenal blitzer. That is his game. He has had 13 sacks in the past two seasons. Reminds me of Kerry Rhodes in that sense... he can really get to the QB and create absolute havok in the backfield. Run defense he is good aswell. Really a big time hitter who will knock your shoes off. He closes on the ball pretty well. In the open field though, he is prone to missing tackles. Pass defense is something he needs to work with. Average at best, even at our level (D1AA). His instincts are lacking and he seems to look around thinking about what to do instead of reacting to the play. He will make some big plays, but will get beat up in the passing game if the receiver is good and he is playing man coverage, 1v1. Overall, Ihedigbo is a very nice college player, and had a great career here. Nice kid, good charachter guy. With that said, I'd be surprised (and concerned) if he makes the team. Just not good enough in pass coverage and I think he would get picked on in the NFL... maybe can find a niche as a blitzing/run stopping specialist in the defensive backfield if the staff feels comfortable that the other guys can shadow his poor coverage skills. Any questions let me know...
