We all watched the same two games. We saw the first 3 qtrs of "playing not to lose" aka: Hermie Ball. We saw a completely different game in the 4th. What was so different? The Ravens were bringing the house in the 4th and our OLine actually picked up their blitzes. Our brilliant OC went from being gutless to being daring and damn near won the game. I'm not sure Shittz knows exactly what he has in KC but he damn well found out in the 4th. I saw throws that I haven't seen since the days of Vinny. Downfield, deep outs, lasers that gave our WR's the extra second to make YACS.. I saw the Kid grow up right before our eyes. He got hit and got up.. I saw our OC go from being Paul Hackett Redux to a daring, go for throat OC. We saw perhaps the future today. If Mangenius is everything folks hope he is, we may have witnessed the second version of Wally Pipp. We're not going to the SB this year folks so why delay the Qb transition? What's the point? Why sacrifice valuable real game experience for our QB of the Future? Sticking with Pennington at this point proves what? Loyalty? Some hope that we'll finish the season 10-4? I'd hate to think that it would take a injury to usher in the KC era as it did with Brady. For all his faults, BB knew what he had in Brady.....
I am on board with the lack of playcalling by the OC. I was saying it in the game and I'm saying it now. We may very well have won this game if we didn't play to not lose something I saw enough off in 5 years with the previous regime I saw it it Chad's 1st start in KC in 02 and I saw it with Bollinger and Kingsbury 2 years ago. I thought that BS was gone but now that we know what we have in KC it might be gone. (At least for the time being)
This is exactly the point. Organizations that cannot make changes at the most important positions in the organization never rise above what they were with those people in place. This is true in football or media or mining. If you like your results and are satisifed with them then you stick with what got you there. If however your results consistently fall short of where you ultimately need to go then you must make changes at those key positions if you want to ever get to your goal. There's no way the Jets have a better chance to get to a super bowl in the next three seasons with Chad at QB instead of Clemens. In fact, my gut tells me that Clemens is 10x as likely to get us there from where we are because Chad is known to be unable to do that.
I don't have that big of a problem with the play calling... the key to beating the Ravens is being close in the 4th quarter where it's clear to me the D wears down... the Ravens have the best D for 3 quarters... the 4th they're a different team... now if you want to blame Mangenius for even keeping McDropins on the team, then I'm right there with you...
The playcalling has been pretty vanilla thus far. But the bigger problem has been execution. The OL coudn't run block or pass protect for 3 quarters. When Clemens had time in the pocket, he picked the Ravens apart.
it took 3 qtrs before schott realized his qb was kc and not dink and duck - it changes the game calls radically.
I agree whole-heartedly with everything but the early playcalling. While I don't like seeing either Chad or Clemens getting banged around in there, while I would have liked to see a more dynamic playcall like we've seen in the past with Schott, I'm not sure I would have lightened the vanilla early on with how fidgety Clemens looked in the first half. I think maybe taking some hits versus a ferocious defense like the Ravens might have been the trial by simplistic fire that Clemens needed. And if the Jets plan on committing to Clemens, they might need to be a bit vanilla early on against the Fins as well. But if this is the case, then Clemens should be under center this week. They know something of what they have in this young guy and if they're building for the future, they have to keep him in there.
Exactly right. In the 4th quarter the Jets repeatedly took shots right up the seams or just outside them. This is an area of the field that the Jets have not thrown to with Chad and obviously it's ripe for exploitation right now. I agree with you that the gameplan changed in the mid 3rd quarter and we got to see Clemens in a plan worked for him thereafter. It took Herm and Heimerdinger 6 games to find a comfort zone with Brooks Bollinger. They went 2 and 2 in the last 4 afterwards. It took Mangini and Schottenheimer 2 and a half quarters to find the zone for Clemens. That's just a huge difference in competence between the old regime and the new. I'm excited about where we could wind up in a year if the Clemens development plan is allowed to proceed.
im not one to defend herm....but i dont think a lot of coaches in the nfl could find a gameplan that would work for brooks. he was solid in college, but hes just not an nfl QB. i like the guy, but...
Y'know, we keep on hearing about how this team prepares for every situation, blah blah blah. But this team has not been prepared for this season. We can only hope that everything comes together next week.
I don't think the playcalling changed all that much. First 3 quarters there was poor pass protection, and Clemens was indecisive. 4th quarter the Ravens got a little more conservative, and when they did blitz we did a better job of picking it up. Clemens got into a nice rhythm.
We don't know what the internal assessment of the Jets readiness is. They may well have concluded that they're going to be very lucky to win 8 games this year and made most of their offseason moves based on that assessment. Preparing for an off-season is no fun to do but it's particularly bad if you're going to have an off-season and not prepare for it. One of the concepts that gets no recognition in the NFL, or any other major sport, is that most teams really do understand when they have no realistic chance to win in a given year. They have to market the team to the fans as a potential winner, but that does not mean that the management is not making prudent moves away from the year. I look at the state of the Jets offensive line and it's clear to me that the Jets either gave up on the year or that they have no clue about what is necessary to win against good teams in the NFL. I'm going to lean heavily towards they understood that the Pats, Ravens, Eagles, Steelers, Cowboys and Titans were probably going to beat them on the line and that they figured the other 9 games would be winnable with a bit of luck.
if thats their thinking then i should give up my love for the team. the management knows when they have no shot, but for the jets higher ups to think of giving away a few games and hoping to get lucky with others is a sin. i think a big thing that is making the jets pay is that they wouldnt pay kendall, but then turn around and pay moore (who walked out of practice during TC as an act of protest) kendall was unhappy with his contract, but he did what he was asked to do, with no thought of the contract. this along with not improving the actual D line only signing edge LBs and backups from other teams are whats killing them this year. cant block, cant rush the passer. cant win if you cant do one of those let alone both.
Mangini was the waterboy for the Patriots 6 years ago...then he was promoted to camera man...to tape defensive signals (a common practice before this season). Now he's your head coach because he did a nice job the tapes. Now he?s just a class at, fat rat who knew he had no chance?.so he decided to severly bresk the coaches code of honor (again) and snitch. Steeling signals has been going on in sports for over 100 years. All I can is is Mangini is a beatch.
Offensively we were doing the same things in the 4th that we were all game, Clemens just began making quicker and better decisions. Clemens had time to throw all day long he just held onto it too long.
