Being a Falcon fan, I would have been happy with trading the #15 pick straight up for JAbe. The Jets FO set the bar when they accepted Seattle's offer of their 31st pick straight up. They actually got a couple of picks better than that, Atlanta gave up the pick but got two additional picks and JAbe giving the 29th pick received from Denver. Some people say Denver robbed ATL out of the pick, but if you think about it, I think we all came out pretty darned good. Jets FO got better than what they initially asked for, the Broncos moved up in the first round, the Falcons got JAbe and two additional lower round picks (when I had expected none). I'm thrilled about the trade and it looks like a majority of the Jets fans seem pretty happy about it too as their FO stood their ground. I really believe they will bring your team to a new level in a couple of years, especially with the great picks you guys have to use in the first and second rounds of this year's strong draft field. Denver gets a big improvement in the draft order of the first round to bargain with or acquire a high caliber player. The Falcons turn their "D" into a potentially Top 5 elite defense. If JAbe does the job in ATL like he did for you guys in NY, I believe Kerney, Coleman and JAbe can all potentially have 12+ sacks this season. In final, I want to thank some of you Jets fans for making me feel welcome here on your boards and I'd also like to wish you the best of luck next season and those thereafter. Dethrone those damned Patriots! ats_suck:
I dont agree with that, However, the one Upshot to this deal is Atlanta gave him a six year deal, 18 Mil in guarantees, so he is not able to be realistically cut until after 4 years. He's 27 with an injury history, And when it comes to playing Post 30, he's not going to be Curtis Martin.
Classy post and I agree every body seems to have come out of this deal with what they wanted. If Abe stays healthy he will be a great player for you.
Exactly my point. The Falcons themselves probably would have in the end, if the Jet played their cards right. I agree and I thought this was their mistake. The bar should have been set around where he was originally selected--again, before he went and proved himself at the NFL level. If he was a #15 (I think, close to that) then as just a potential player, he should be worth the same or more now, in his prime and after 3 Pro Bowls. You can say the situation with the Jets brought their leverage down, but they had the franchise tag on him and to me they sold themselves short. The #15 would have been the proper compensation. Who would Atlanta have drafted at #15 that is in his prime and has been to 3 Pro Bowls?
And we gave up Abe and didn't get the #15. Sorry, I think we got hosed. Once again, had Bradway done this the outrage on the board would be tremendous.
I think your last part is right. Especially those who think this move was a great one by Tangini. You hear the same thing on this board when people talk about how Mangini is looking for smart, team players, etc which is exactly the same type of players the previous regime talked about bringing in too. Had this offseason been orchestrated by the past regime people would be furious and complaining about a "KC" connection. I mean we just signed two backups from the Pats who are "Mangini's guys" but by no means really solidify this team. Don't get me wrong, they may be very good role players and all along I've said it takes more then just your starters to win games but Mangini is doing exactly what people complained about Herm doing. He's bringing in "HIS" players so that he can implement "HIS" scheme. Only real difference is they are more aggressively getting rid of those who don't fit that scheme. Before people jump on me let me set the record straight and say that not only did I not have a problem when Herm did this but I don't have a problem with Mangini doing it. He's doing what he feels is best for the team and I hope it works out. I'm just following up on IS's point that it's rather funny how people biases change their perception of things.
I actually think that Denver made out best in this deal because they moved up to #15 for a very small price (at least it seems without looking at the draft value chart). That being said because Atlanta gets JAbe it offsets what they didn't get from Denver. The Jets decided they didn't want JAbe and had to at least come away with a 1st to save face and they did.
That would be nice but it rarely happens that way. Just look at what Miami paid (2nd rounder) for first rounder and perennial pro bowler Daunte Culpepper. Happens all the time. You have too many factors at play when moving a disgruntled player to get some perceived initial value. Good players, even All Pros, get moved for 2nd and even 3rd rounders a ton in the NFL. Given that, the Jets got some decent value for Abe. mud
We more than saved face we are going to be able to get a very good OL men at 29 or package that pick to move up and take our QB of the future. Now I don't think we should do that but at 29 we are going to be able to get a center or a guard two positions of crucial need.
Decent but not what he's worth. Culpepper is coming off a major knee surgery after struggling in his first year without Randy Moss, Brad Johnson stepping in and winning with the same team exposed him a bit. Abraham is coming off a 16-game Pro Bowl season. As ugly as it got with Abe, he wasn't TO, we didn't have to settle a month before the draft for what is practically a #2 pick. He's arguably the best player on the team--certainly the defense--and we can't even get what he was worth as an untested rookie? I'm sorry, considering the #15 was there to be had and we not only didn't get it but someone else did, I can't be satisfied with this deal.
I agree we can get a good OL men at 29 if we go that route (which hopefully they will). I just meant they needed to come away with a first rounder if they were going to let him go not to look like they were taken advantage of since they did have most of the leverage.
