If we beat the undefeated (if still undefeated) Patriots when we play them in a few weeks and destroy their chance to make a perfect season...will that win be the biggest upset of all time? Will it be the greatest win in our history (besides the Super Bowl)?
Not even close. Probably nothing the Jets ever do will be as big as SB3. They were the first AFC team to win it, the first to establish the AFC as a legitimate league.
Even winning the Super Bowl again is unlikely to match the impact of the SBIII win, given the whole 'validation of the AFL' thing. A regular season win could never amount to anything close, although I grant you it would be a huge upset.
Nice thought but um No! The only thing in the past ten years that can even rank with super bowl 3 is the midnight mirical! I dont see the Jets even getting close to a super bowl at pressent but if by some strange twist of fate that the Jets get there in the next 3-4 years Im almost sure it will be with a lot of luck and a million breaks that go our way!
I remember one big win that the Jets had that I would rather forget. Jets 41 Colts 0 That being said I just don't see them beating New England in New England
I think he's saying that's what it would be called if they lost. Although I wouldn't be shocked if we beat New England. Very surprised? Certainly. Shocked, not at all. WhiteShoeWillie's right, though, we will be bigger underdogs in Vegas. It will be remembered, though. People remember Kent Graham and the Giants beating the Broncos, and this game will have a lot more storylines, and a lot more publicity because this New England team is thought of as better than that Broncos team. It will go down as one of the greatest regular season games of all-time, one of the greatest Jets wins of all-time, and one of the defining moments of the 2007 season.
Agree. From what I read, had the Jets not beat the Colt, the merger may not have happened and the NFL may not have existed. So, I would say SBIII was a pretty big deal.
It would be huge if it broke their undefeated season. It would be talked about forever but it wouldn't be as big as SB3. Actually, there never has been or will there be any game played by any teams as big as SB3.
That's not correct. The merger occurred in 1966. In '66 the NFL and AFL agreed to merge in 1970 under the monicker of the NFL. Until 1970, the two leagues agreed to play a world championship game (Super Bowl) at the end of the season between the two leagues' champions. What the Jets' victory did was legitimize the AFL after Green Bay had blown out the Chiefs and Raiders. More than the Jets Super Bowl victory, it was the signing of Namath and other star players by AFL teams that hastened the merger. Although it wouldn't equal SB III, the Jets beating an unbeaten Pats team would rank as one of the franchise's most memorable. It's about the only thing we can dream about while this current string of games plays out.
That's true and had the merger not taken place and had Al Davis remained the commissioner of the AFL there is a very real possibility that the AFL would have driven the NFL out of business.
Thank you for the correction, I enjoy learning about sports history. What I should have said is that the merger could have collapsed absent the AFL proving it could compete with the superior NFL teams. (at least that is what I had read.)
If the jets beat the pats....i would agree it would be a bigger upset than that old school superbowl But it aint gonna happen anyway
