No way. Mangini is the only coach in the league who would have settled for 3 in the redzone down 5 with under two minutes to play. 4th and 10? Fine then you have one shot to put the ball in the endzone and win it. That's more likely to happen than kicking the FG, recovering the onsides kick and then getting another FG. Even if you think Clemens only had a 25% chance to complete that pass that's still a more likely occurrence because it's the simplest path. Occam's Razor for Dummies. We should send a copy to Mangini.
Actually I thought it wasn't that dumb a call. What had me scratching my head was after doing that was the onside kick. If the idea was to get within a FG with 3 time outs why not play the percentage and pin them back and get the ball with 45 or 50 seconds left to move 40 yards for a FG?
You and me both. If you're going to trust your defense and have 3 timeouts, you pin them as deep as possible. That was just clueless.
I thought it was a terrible call mainly because the Jet's D has not been able to stop people consistently when they need to. They were in the red zone with the ball down 5. You go for the endzone in that situation. At least any coach who knows what he is doing does. Any other move is essentially saying that you have no confidence in your QB, receivers and line. While that may be an accurate statement at this point it's suicide for a coach who is trying to keep the team from quitting. BTW, if he puts Chad back in the Jets will quit next week and he'll never get them back again.
So you think Herm would have went for it? You are kidding yourself if you think no other coach would have done that. Be objective, but of course you can't be because that would blow up a chance for you to bash our coach.
Now that one I can understand questioning but to say EM is the only coach that would have kicked to field goal there is just stupid and plain just not true.
While I will agree that Mangini is not having a good season, to say he is the worst coach in the league is really underestimating just how bad Cam Cameron is. Give Cameron the respect he deserves!
Why would he have confidence in either the WR or the line? The line didn't open up even an inch on two plays on the goal line and Cotch had just dropped a TD pass a play before and landed on his broken finger and was clearly in pain. Coles was pretty much done at that point. I happen to think he played the % by taking the FG, he basically decided that the chance of a 4th and 10 with no Coles and Cotch in pain was less than the onside kick. Now I don't see that as so far fetched however after making that choose I would have put the game on the D with 3 time outs.
Although Cameron is a great choice for number one this award will eventually go to Norv Turner for not giving LT the ball at some point during this season. Cameron has a horrible team, Turner will wreck a Sb Caliber team.
I give Mangini a pass this year. He under-estimated where his Offensive and Defensive line were before this season. Now, if we do absolutely nothing of significance in FA for either line I will be very concerned - even mad. Because then things begin to look far worse. All the comments about Woody being cheap and this CS not knowing what they are doing will really start to have some real weight. Bottom line: We can not fix this team with just using this years' draft. Not seriously addressing the lines means next year may not be much different than this year.
Not just you. Their coach has never won a game in the NFL, ours went to the playoffs as a rookie head coach.
Are you kidding me??? I DESPISE the PATS!!! I am a long suffering Jets fan just like everyone else here...
I must be thinking of another poster named Russ or something then. I thought he had the big ol' Pats SB ring as his avatar.
90% of the coaches in this league or 90% of the cheerleaders in this league? I guarantee you 100% of the coaches in the league would have gone for it on 4th and 10. If you do make the dumbest decision of the year, why on earth do you compound the problem by onsiding the next kick? Even infants and toddlers these days know that converting a 4th and 10 on a passing down is a lot higher than recovering the onside kick, let alone when the defense is expecting an onside kick. You need balls to coach in this league, and yestrerday Mangini clearly showed he doesnt have any.
While I agree with giving Mangini 1 more year, why on earth should we give him a pass for not properly assessing our lines? Both our lines were atrocious last year and he didnt do anything whatsoever to address it. Oh wait, he did try. He signed a couple of players that havent been in football for years or players who were full time backups with other teams.
Its painting by numbers , the football version. Even my children can call run or pass now , and I'm not joking
