No surprize really. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/scorecard/nflnews.asp?articleID=226478 "Ravens place franchise tag on Suggs Owings Mills, MD (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Ravens placed the franchise tag on linebacker Terrell Suggs Tuesday. Suggs has been offered a one-year deal by the team worth more than $8 million - the average salary of the five highest-paid linebackers in the league last season. The provisional deal means that the Ravens can continue to negotiate a contract with Suggs. Baltimore then has a chance to either match any offer made by another team, or offer a pair of first-round draft picks as compensation. "We will continue to work with 'Sizzle' with the intention of signing him to a long-term contract," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. "He is one of our best players, and our success with re-signing our best players is very good." The 10th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Suggs recorded 78 tackles and five sacks in 16 games last season. In only five campaigns with the team, he ranks third on the franchise's all-time sack list with 45, trailing only Peter Boulware (70) and Michael McCrary (51). "
So basically...for the first time in awhile we have same real cap room and a ton of needs...and we cant catch a break on potential targets
Other taggees today include Jared Allen (chiefs), LJ Smith (eagles), Dansby (cards), and the only thing missing on the tag for Haynesworth is paper - he has been told that the Titans will do it. Obviously, in another thread Andrews (bengals).
Would anyone here consider giving up the two #1's to sign Suggs? I would think about it. If he is truly a difference maker, he could dramatically change the defense immediately.
I would definitely take my chances with Ellis or Gholston being there at #6 before giving up that kind of value for a player.
the only surprising player tagged has been andrews there was no way suggs would hit the market...and the ravens front office has been saying this for some time...no surprise here and nothing to complain about there is plenty of difference makers available...we just have to choose the right ones
You don't think LJ Smith was surprising at all? The guy is nothing special, just a middle of the pack TE in my book.
I'd say he's worth more than D'Brick or Dewayne. And I would trade him straight up for another first rounder, Vilma. My point is we all tend to over value the potential of a #1 pick when compared to a proven commodity like Suggs.
it was talked about as a possible move....andrews getting franchised didnt come up until about a week ago i figured they would considering the amount of caproom nearly every team has....the fact that the TE tag isnt too high, and that he is the 3rd option in the eagles offense
