Okay so now we got LT LG C and trying to get a good RT, what about Brandon Moore at RG? Is he good enough? I haven't heard a word about him. Adam Shefter mentioned the entire line except for him.
Oh, and BTW....taking these contracts at face value (not looking for backloads that will never be paid) We are still 10 mil UNDER the cap. BEFORE A SINGLE PLAYER RESTRUCTURES, GETS CUT OR TRADED...ETC....That real amount, given the structure of previous contracts, is probably higher
QFT. Theres two issues constantly ignored when people complain: 1. Our cap problems since 2000. Woody hasn't been cheap so much as we've been working with limited cap space since Parcells quick fix influx and then Bradway and Herm's poor management of talent and lack of long term plan. One of the biggest problems many saw Mangini and Tanny having when they became the HC/GM of this franchise is that we were in cap hell. Many speculated that Tannenbaum couldn't be that great if our cap was that bad. The increase in the league salary cap + an emphasis on the draft early on has allowed to offseason to go the way it has. 2. They went from underrating the rebuild process to using it as a weapon because so many people (including myself) shoved that point in their face. It's now become "how long can you say you're rebuilding" to "if we're rebuilding, why are we suddenly spending all this money to win now?" 3. The rebuilding process goes beyond talent though, and thats where I think people got/can get thrown off. Cap hell, instilling organizational philosophies and ideals, getting guys mentally tough enough to handle taking a ton of lumps, getting those guys to believe their HC and GM will back them and believe in them 100%. 4. They're overrating and underrating the significance of these moves at the same time. While they are HUGE and do immediately make us contenders, we're not an elite team yet and thats where we want to be....thats the overrated part. These guys are *pieces* to the big picture. They may be keys to this single offseason and obviously they should have a huge positive impact in the immediate future, but both of these guys should have enough left in their tanks to still be useful 3, 4, or even 5 years down the road. Thats kind of what makes them such good moves. It's not like we signed these guys to one year contracts for one big run.
Unbelievable...This is the best signings the Jets have had since Parcells stole Curtis Martin from the Patriots. Who gives a shit about 3 or 4 years down the road. I think this front office believes they can win right now and I love the aggresive attitude.
If they didn't do anything to adress 2 very key needs, we would be bitching that the FO wasn't doing anything. They have done what we all thought they should. I thought that Faneca was a pipedream. and now we have a Pro Bowl LG to stick between 2 kids on the OL. It's a very good thing. Faneca doesn't have a very checkered injury history which is good news. Jenkins could be huge, or he could bust...only time will tell. but we needed the extra 700 pounds....how can you not be pleased? As far as the JVilma deal...that could turn out to be a steal. if we end up with a second rounder for him, its gonna be a sexy thing. We need him to stay healthy and resign with NO, and we get a very nice return. As far as CB-Gay is out there, and that isn't a bad option. Samuel was going to come with a very heavy pricetag (look what the Eagles paid him...I loved his intro where he said he wanted to go back to the Super Bowl, that's why he signed in Philly. Just admit it has SOMETHING to do with the other kind of green, not Eagles green). I see the Jets moving down in the first round and getting at least 1 more pick for this year. Unless someone is at 6 where you HAVE to take a guy, which I don't think will happen. The 6th spot is a tough one this year...there isn't a heavy big-hitter player that should be there that is a need for us. If Long is there at 6, I think he is someone you have to look at. Stick him in at RT, and see where we are in a year. If anything you could flip him and Brick in 09... I really see us dropping in the first round to get a2nd or 3rd this year. The draft is deep, but it isn't a impact player heavy one. A lot of role guys are gonna come out this year...I wouldn't mind snagging that RB from Illinois in the 2nd or 3rd....and I want Owen Schmidt...but I can't get everything I gues...
my worry also, but i gotta believe, with the way the contracts are structured, and the fact that the cap goes up every year, they know what they're doing.plus, i think they are planning, between this season and next, on getting rid of some more overpriced dead wood, that we have, which will free up more money
We got Faneca at the going rate for his position..There were other suitors on this you do realize?..your either in or your out..Jets were in and got their man!!..The Jenkins deal was a 3 and a 5..FO probably debated then felt it was worth it and pulled the trigger.. Show me someone who never takes any chances and I'll show you a loser.
they finally woke up from their year long slumber, and acknowledged that you must be competitive in the trenches in order to have a shot at the playoffs. They plugged the two humongous holes they had last year- LG and NT- with two of the better available players at those spots. They still need a legit RT to shore up the gaping weakness in the trenches, and then they can address other spots- LB, CB, and they need a #1 WR, too.
I really think Cotch can be that guy. If Stuckey comes in this year and can be healthy, we have a pretty good core group of wideouts. With Cotch, Wright, Coles, and Stuckey...not to mention Smith and Verney (because he will be here). I could see them taking a flyer on a wideout in the draft in the mid rounds. But there are usually some good role guys that fall through during TC. I don't think the position is a major need. A team can always upgrade, but I wouldn't say reciever is a top 5 priority (imo).
Could be...but in terms of an upgrade, I wouldnt mind seeing them take the flyer on a WR as you suggested. Darnell Jenkins is a possibility. Coles is one solid hit to the noggin away from retirement. Cotch is a solid #2 imo. Stuckey is the wildcard. He looked really good last summer until he got hurt- but he has a history of not staying healthy. Smith is still adjusting to a new position, and the jury is out on him at WR. Wright could also be a guy who comes on, but right now, he and Smith are most useful as gunners on the STs.
Mangini is moving toward a "his players" team. It is the HC's prerogative and it takes some time to do it. First you have to really evaluate everyone on the team when you got there in sustained trials by fire. When you find somebody who doesn't block well or who doesn't like to tackle -- you have to find a replacement before you release them. No reason to make matters worst first. The draft is a long term proposition -- more so, I think, than ever because of the big difference in complexity and headiness now required in the NFL versus the run-and-gun of college. This means that professional atheletes can't get by on talent alone anymore (except RBs sometimes) because it takes longer to get your head and body together to play ball in the pros. Therefore, you have to take better care of your body -- your real prime will start a couple of years after you're drafted if you work your butt off and you keep your nose clean. Otherwise like Odel Thurman, growing up will cost you four maybe five years of your youthful talent while you climb hesitantly out of your diapers. A lot of folks think that what you're borne with and what you escape from college with is all it takes. Well, that is not so for the vast majority of highly-touted athletes. BMOCs in high school become freshmen in college, and BMOCs in college become rooks in the NFL. This last move, because of the high publicity and media adulation, represents a far more humbling experience for those who aren't well grounded and take the praise at its word.
i was looking at the UFAs and there were a few WRs that looked like they could be decent additions at a reasonable price.... DJ Hackett Jabar Gaffney (I know, no more Pats, but I liked this guy since he was a Gator) Drew Carter and if you're looking for a big name, Javon Walker was let go by the Broncos on Friday...A lot more money for a big talent upgrade, but theres a lot of baggage with him. and of course Moss... There are a few others out there that wouldnt be a bad sign...but unless the price is reasonable there isn't a point in going after another wide out unless things fall apart with Verney.
