haven't seen any post on this, but last night's south park (4/9) does a nice job ripping on the patriots. Don't want to give it away, but it involves belichick, cartman, and cheating. Not one of the best episodes (really hard to top last week's "canada on strike", probably the best SP episode ever) but the anti-pats theme alone makes it worth watching. Check it out if you got time
Pretty soon the world will be anti-Patriots and then we can just put Boston into a giant net and have Superman fling it into the sun.
Eric Cartmanez it is! Bellicheck said to his players, the night before the last superbowl "lets win this one for real!" and what did they do? They lost! this proves that even when all eyes are on you, you must just cheat better in order to win! SP is again top of the line!
but isn't this nice to see?? The bullshit from the last 7 years coming down on them, a coach that can't be taken seriously anymore, a franchise that has finally lost all of its bandwagoners (they went to the Giants and the Browns), its like the scarlet letter now. I actually love the fact they had a fake dynasty, it just means nothing to everyone in the NFL community. That team, until they move, will be mentioned as cheaters with the likes of Pete Rose, and Shoeless Joe Jackson... Great players/teams in their own right... but tarnished forever. The only difference is the Pats aren't loveable.
Yea, even though you have to take south park with a giant grain of salt, it just proves that pop culture and the general public thinks that the patriots "dynasty"* was just a big joke that people aren't really taking seriously anymore. There was a part in the episode that pretty much discounts the entire dynasty* and all their SB wins*
Denver Broncos Salary Cap Violations of the Late 90’s: Parked South in our memories Have you ever found yourself sitting around a room with friends, throwing back a few suds, when the insults started flying? No one really intends to hurt anyone’s feelings, because they are after all, ragging on their friends. But, it’s still fun, right? Then out of nowhere, you get hit with a knock out blow. A comment that leaves you without a response. You just sit there, tip your bottle, and take it. It happens to everyone. What sucks worst about getting hit with that knockout blow by a buddy, eventually, you’ll come up with the perfect comeback. The only problem is that when you do, you’re pulling your car into your driveway at the end of the night. You can always rip your cellphone out from your pocket, get your friend on the phone and deliver the, “Yeah, well maybe I would have gotten away with the gnome, if your sister wasn’t busy giving handjobs to the junior varsity cross-country team!” Sure, doing so might make you feel a little better, but the Rain Man like timing of your response won’t add any credibility towards your argument. This week, South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, apparent Denver Bronco fans, delivered their version of the hour late phone call comeback, when Cartman tried reaching out to a classroom of inner city kids by teaching them to cheat like Bill Belichick. Cartman stated that it’s not really cheating, if you end up succeeding. Only in this case, Stone and Parker waited seven months to get in their jab at the Patriots. Better late than never, I guess, right? Well, since there appears to be no statue of limitations on wise ass cheap shots, let’s not forget to credit the Denver Broncos for tainting their ‘97 and ‘98 Super Bowl titles by cheating the league imposed salary cap. In December, 2001, the Broncos were fined $968,000 and lost their ‘02 third round draft pick for delayed payments made between 1996 and 1998 in sum of $29 million made to John Elway and Terrell Davis. When the sanctions were handed down, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen claimed that his club gained no competitive advantage from their violations of the salary cap. Bowlen’s statement is believable, right? I mean Terrell Davis may have been award the MVP of Denver’s first Super Bowl title, and Elway the MVP of their second championship, but haven’t both of them on the field didn’t give the Broncos any competitive advantage. Of course it didn’t! Like Cartman said, “It’s not cheating, if you’re successful!” Since the Broncos managed to succeed in winning two Super Bowl titles while manipulating the contracts of their two star players, then it doesn’t classify as cheating. So, is it too late to throw jabs at the Broncos for cheating the salary cap? Of course not! Seven months, ten years…what’s the difference! After all, Cartman didn’t outline any statue of limitations that could be enforced against cheating, when he lectured the classroom of inner city kids. Haha, and oh, WAH, you're not kidding. It's amazing how it's all about deflection, not admission. Nothing new there. I've said this before. If this had been the Jets, I would just openly admit it. The fact that so many NE fans - as well as their beat writers - would rather get run over by a truck than admit they skirt the issue speaks for itself. All I hear is, "I know you are, but what am I?" Their 'legacy' is tainted. They should try weally, weally hard to get over it.
You guys are dreaming. The Pats never admitted it? Are you kidding me? The bandwagon fans have jumped on the Giants? You guys live in a fantasy world. And people from New England never did care much what the rest of the country thinks anyway, so this idea that we are ashamed is kind of silly. When are you New Yorkers gonna learn how to make clam chowder, anyway? WTF is with orange clam chowder? And it's terrible! I thought I'd try the "manhattan" clam chowder recently......Ugh! Disgusting.
^^ with your fondness for creamy white liquid, I'd say you're pretty well innoculated against breast cancer.
I'll openly admit that: it was stupid of BB, arrogant of BB, and reflected very poorly on the Pats organization. It was an douche thing to do, and the fact that the team is led by a guy who continues to develop a reputation as a huge sack of shit is also embarrassing. However, I don't see how their legacy is tainted. To me in sports something is tainted if their accomplishments only existed because of actions taken that were inherently against the rules and created an unfair competitive advantage. I don't think that's the case, especially if all they were doing was taping coaches signals and not using them during the game itself. Sure, I suppose it was "cheating" in the literal sense in that rules were broken in an effort to gain a competitive advantage, but the actual infraction itself was so minor that their legacy in terms of success, is not really affected IMO. I guess if you're one of those people that views a team winning but giving off the general persona of douchines as something that would taint a team, then sure this team is tainted.
Well, that's the problem. Apparently they were. They would tape them in the first half, give them to their team at halftime and then the defense would know what plays were going to be called for the second half. (Or was it the offense? whatever). At least that is the allegations.
Here's the catch... They won their 3 SB's by 3 points a piece. If they for example taped the Rams final walk through, and the coaches watched it, you're out of your mind if you don't think that can swing a game 3-6 points or more. That 3-6 points could be the result of a single play. If they were using signals stolen in the 1st half in the 2nd, it absolutely can change the tide of a game. With the eyes of the world on them, they somehow didn't seem to be in the Giants huddle. Even the OL wasn't holding all game for the first time in the 2007 season. The refs called a fair game. All that equates to a fair game and the Pats not winning by 3 again.
