Well he cant catch if he doesnt get the chance to, he has to stand and block because our oline on the right side was garbage the past few years. If its a small raise, he deserves it but if its anything crazy, then I agree that you have to part ways or trade him. Maybe if they give him a new contract, it can be incentive based or something to get him more motivated.
Actually this is rather common in the workplace where newer workers tend to end up making more than the people who have been on the job for a while. If Baker wants to play this game I say cut him. We can always find another mediocre TE to fill his cleats.
I feel for Baker. He like Cotchery has had to suffer the burden of having a horrible QB for the last few years.
i've always liked baker. he's made some amazing catches. i never understood why our cs hasn't included him more in the game plans. i know, he does not have amazing speed, but not too many te's do. as far as 'so called contracts' go, my feeling is this: teams sign players to contracts but then cut/release their sorry asses if they don't pan out. so when players DO 'pan out', teams should reward them with a better contract.
It?s the principal of the thing! You cannot give in when a guy's got two years remaining on a contract! If you do, then you will have scores of non-performing players demanding money and that?s not good. Sorry pal, you signed it now honor it!
thats a good point. I didn't know what to think about this. I understand Baker is upset about it and I can see why. But should anyone that cries about their contract get a new one. When will it stop on the team. Eventually you have to make a stand and tell them to hold to their contract. I hope baker comes back because I think he is a good TE but so is Bubba and maybe some young blood might be nice. I would rather have him come back though.
Depends on the job. For example, if the job requires a degree or other qualifications that didn't before then you are probably correct. However that usually isn't the case. Older, more experience workers are usually let go and the company hires cheap colleges grads at a fraction of the cost. However we aren't taking about new workers in this case. Bubba Franks is a seasoned veteran. He's more accomplished than Baker. I would be unhappy if I were Baker but he needs to man up and get something done. He's the kind of unhappy player that gets cut at training camp.
i hate when average players who just signed a contract and have one decent year act like there all world, go fuck yourself baker your nothing special, we can easly draft a te to play, and w/b.franks on our team baker needs to watch what he does, does boss [from the giants in the sixth rd ring a bell?]
Thanks for the memories Chris. What memories, ummm, that catch you had in the end zone in week 6... no I mean week 7. We will call you if we ever decide to use the TE in the passing game.
No he didn't sign a new deal two years ago, he signed a new deal 4 months ago, Dec. 2007. He has already been paid for the decent year he had last year. He accepted the contract and was happy with it What exactly has he done since December to deserve a raise? It is being said that Franks is his back up. Who says so? I have a feeling Baker has been the "Unnamed player" who is complaining to the press. I also have a feeling the FO knows it, and that is why Franks was brought in. Wouldn't be stunned if Baker was moved on Saturday. Chris Baker gets contract extension By Hoss Aultman Posted Dec 12, 2007 Jets tight end Chris Baker was given a contract extension. The announcement was made by Dave Hutchinson in the Star-Ledger. "TE Chris Baker, who was thought to be in Mangini's doghouse after criticizing the play-calling following a controversial loss to the Eagles in Week 6, quietly had his contract renegotiated last month, The Star-Ledger has learned," wrote Hutchinson. "Baker, in his sixth season, signed a new three-year contract worth $5.4 million. Baker received roughly $800,000 in new money. His base salary went from $850,000 this season to 2.37 million.
Chris Baker fussing again, after 12 Dec contract upgrade? Ignore him. He's only hurting himself if he doesn't take advantage of the volunteer days at the training facility.
Becht could block but couldn't catch. Baker can catch but can't block. We haven't had a "complete" TE in many years.
He has great hands. We trouble with OL last yr so he was kept as a blocking TE. He will be catching more passes this yr. He's getting about $2M this yr including Bonus. Thats not that bad for a TE who primarily blocks and is not an elite TE. He has two yrs left on his contract. I say we dont give him an extension or raise this yr. I think he will get a new contract though.
