I'm going to miss the voice of the AFL and AFC through the 60's 70 and 80s. Always smooth and professional, he always seemed to have positive things to say about the Jets.
Charlie Jones voice reminds of AFL games when I was growing up which in my opinion are the greatest years of Football. Al Deragotis and Curt Gowdy are also on that list of voices that remind of the AFL. In fact I heard a later broadcast of Charlie with Todd Christensen that was good also.
Charlie called alot of the 4:00 AFL games which seemed to always be the Raiders and Chiefs in some great wars, he was excellent...
CHARLIE JONES spent 38 years as a Pro Football play-by-play man, and was one of ABC's original AFL voices in 1960. In his first assignment, Jones called the play-by-play for the first AFL game ever broadcast. Jones followed the AFL to NBC in 1965 and covered all ten years of the league's existence.
For all you AFL nuts out there, I just received the 1962 AFL Championship classic on DVD. Houston Oilers vs. Dallas Texans.
i do recall jones doing early 80's jet games with christensen and len dawson. i believe jones did a couple of the 82-83 playoff games. liked him much better than the enberg/olsen tandem. jil
Another great AFL voice was the voice of the Jets Merle Harmon...I have the SuperJets CD with his actual radio calls of the '68 season....as a kid the home games were on radio, and I would listen to Merle and Sam DeLuca do the games they were excellent...
Charlie Jones that great, great AFL, AFC football voice, those great pipes I'll always remember. When he paired up with Todd Christensen later on, those two together were special. When I think AFC football, I think Charlie Jones and Don Criqui.........Two AFC legends.....
