They did this with Sanchez. They didn’t keep many of his receivers and it showed. The offensive line changes were necessary but we should have kept Robby Anderson. Saving a few million on that was dumb. Herndon for whatever reason had his head up his ass this year so basically Sam only had Crowder to throw to. Between the offensive line trying to figure it out and Sam lacking chemistry with receivers it was a disaster.
this makes sense to me in that Gase’s little success came with Peyton...the classic definition of drop back passer. But Peyton had years of experience and much more talent than Darnold to assess plays at the line. He was the best at it. just goes to show that Gase had no ability or desire to actually tailor his system to his players I hate coaches like that
peyton also ran that offense. audibles out of bad plays and had pre-snap motion. peyton was an OC on the field as well as a QB in a way no other QB has been since. he can make up for bad coaching easily.
Darnold seems to fold under pressure, he doesnt lead the team back, struggles mightily against the blitz and is easily confused. These are things by year 3 you should know Would you go to a year 3 surgeon when you need an emergency appendectomy whobhas potential but cant consistently perform the procedure? I would just focus on his 2018 1st Round Draft Class besides Josh Rosen: Baker Mayfield: Great O-line, amazing running game, solid WR's, solid defense, good new Head Coach= (11-5) and a playoff win. Josh Allen: Good o-line, great WR's, not much of a running game besides himself, solid defense, Great Head Coach= (12-4) and in the AFC Championship Game Lamar Jackson: Great team around him, Great Head Coach= (11-5) and a playoff win this season, NFL MVP last season. Sam Darnold: Bad O-line, No running game, No WR's besides Crowder ( who was hurt a lot in 2020), terrible defense, Terrible Head Coach= (2-14) and people ready to move on. This isn't rocket science, it is pretty obvious. It's a team sport and Sam's team has been horrendous around him. You call it excuses, but they are just the truth. Sam is not absolved of blame though. He played poorly a lot of the time. He did not carry the terrible team around him to success like perhaps an Aaron Rodgers would do. And those are legitimate issues. Ones that makes me think the Jets may move on from Sam with a new Head Coach coming in and a GM in Joe Douglas that did not draft him. It's not that Sam is not capable of turning it around and succeeding, it is more that there is no reason for Douglas or Saleh to take that risk.
Good point DK. Another one I've noticed is that some fans, especially some of these guys with Youtube channels, get really hard into "breaking down" film on the players. And while that is great, and can obviously be insightful, I think sometimes film only shows what has happened in the past. It doesn't always tell us for sure what is going to happen in the future. One good example of course is Josh Allen and how a lot of these film expert fans knew for an absolute fact he had no accuracy and would never have decent completion % in the NFL. One thing I think I know for an absolute fact. Douglas, Saleh, and the people helping them will make a good judgement on Darnold. Hopefully they think he can be the guy going forward because not only do I like Darnold, it would also be excellent from a practical team building resource standpoint because he's already locked in on the payroll (at a high cost of draft capital) and it would be really nice to see the Jets actually get some good players with all these premium draft picks to get a decent offense. Something we haven't had in years and years.
Man, I still remember that Packers vs Jets game during Rookie Season. I thought we were seeing a star in the making at that point. But then Gase got hired, and then everything went to crap.
