Really great game by the Yanks all the way around. Well, except for Chad Gaudin. That dude does everything he can to lose games. He needs to join Randy Winn.
i get the feeling theyre just using gaudin as the garbage man and plan to cut him loose as soon as someone is ready in AAA
I don't understand why they don't just use someone from AAA then. Like Melancon. He's getting beat up down there, so he may as well get beat up here and at least maybe learn something from the pros. There's also Tim Redding or even Kei Igawa if you just want a throwaway guy. Also, Albaladejo has been pitching pretty well down there, but I haven't heard so much as a peep that he would be considered for the pro club. I wonder if he pissed off somebody at some point?
I said he should be. It looks like that's going to be the situation more or less for the time being as well. I'm sure everyone knows I'd much rather never see Nick Johnson again, but Cervelli's plate struggles aren't going to get better. Eventually Girardi is going to want to get, say, Thames in the lineup as DH, which will shift Posada back behind the plate. Of course, there's also the ARod/Jeter/Teixiera/Cano/Swisher half-day off revolution to factor in too. Personally, I'd rather keep Cervelli behind the plate as often as possible. I don't care about his bat so much as the vastly improved defensive situation he creates behind the plate. I am a little surprised he went completely cold though. His hitting just fell off a cliff. I didn't think the pitching would catch up to him that much. Hopefully Long can work his magic with Cisco and at least get him to be a competent bottom-of-the-order guy.
I've been wondering why Albaladejo seems to be getting the Chris Britton treatment. He's not a world beater by any means but the guy has a live arm, and there's no way he could do worse than Gaudin. Did anyone hear John Sterling's call of Granderson's slam last night by the way? I think it made me throw up in my mouth.
Albaladejo isn't really a long man... more of a one inning guy. And I can understand wanting to see a little more from him in the minors considering how bad he was last year. I could also understanding wanting to see a little more from Gaudin before writing him off. Before last night, he'd been mediocre across four appearances. Either way, we're talking about the last guy in the pen. Rarely should he be the difference maker in any game.
I agree on Albaladejo. I didn't get to hear Sterling's call. I'm sure it was epic. Fair enough, but in end, don't you want your best team possible out there? Mitre is the long guy. Now that Javy is settled in, we don't need to worry about Mitre filling in with the rotation anymore. (Injuries aside, of course.) That would allow Albaladejo to pitch one inning, as he's capable of doing. I hear you on the wanting to see more in the minors though. That's a good point. As for Gaudin, he's been awful this year. He lost the Toronto game over the weekend in the 14th. Before coming here he was brutal with Oakland. Forget last man out of the pen, I'd rather Girardi gave the ball to Swisher to pitch again before Gaudin. A 12-3 game should never be exciting in the ninth.
CC needs to start dealing. doesnt look that great, but gets through the first thanks to a pickoff and 2 ks.
They said they wanted to (and then did) convert Mitre to more of a short-inning guy recently. I'm sure they could put him back, but he hasn't been the long man out the pen for a few weeks. As for putting the best team out there, sure, that's what you want. But you also try to show a bit of patience. They just picked up Gaudin recently. They can't option him; they'd have to DFA him. Maybe this is correctable and a bad stretch. You picked him up, might as well see what you have, especially since it's not exactly a vital role. If he can regain even a bit of last year's form, they're in good shape. And Gaudin is a bit more of a known commodity, while Albaladejo is not. In any case, I don't really care if they DFA Gaudin and call up Alby if they think that's best. I'm just saying that I'm not really sweating that role on the team, and considering the importance of that role, I can understand them wanting to see what they can get out of Gaudin before making somewhat knee-jerk roster moves. If he still sucks in a month, the move probably becomes more obvious... and is doubtful to have cost the Yanks much in terms of W/L.
