he's sort of a forgotten guy, I am anxious to see if he can become a consistent contributor as a pass rusher.
He's one of the guys I'm most excited about this season. I think he made a ton of progress last year - credit to the Jets CS for that. I hope he is able to put that weight on and keep it on to be an every down linebacker. There's no way we could have kept him on the field on running downs last year - he was getting destroyed by run blockers.
Asked him how the weight was going at Taste of the NFL . Said he was going at 245 and as fast as ever Sent from my SGH-T679 using Tapatalk 2
i really think hes going to have a big year this upcoming year. he will make us forget the need for a pass rushing OLB.
i am hoping he can show the ability to break down and contain/tackle on outside runs.that would lessen the pressure of adding an olb in next years draft
This means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! What do you guys think he was trying to do all the other offseasons? Is it news that all players in the NFL are "trying to perfect themselves" for the upcoming season? No shit they are. It doesn't mean they are actually capable of doing it. He's a "run around the field in dime situations" guy, and that's all he'll ever be. He wont be a starter, he wont be able to hold the edge, and he wont be able to handle blockers in the run game. This stuff is just getting absurd.
Except now he's working with NFL quality coaches that have actually shown the ability to get production out of him and noted improvement. Of course saying these things means nothing but it's noteworthy that the Jets told him to forget all the bullshit the Bills taught him, simplified it and it worked. Hopefully a full offseason with quality coaching will get him to take another step - especially if he can actually hold the weight.
for all of you that said we didn't address the outside LB position, Maybin and the return of B.Thomas is why. Maybin is a pass rusher, and Thomas sets the edge. it would have been a waste to draft a pass rushing outside LB when you already have one. wow! how most of you forgot about Maybin.
poor Toronto Bills fans just because their crappy coaches couldn't do anything with Maybin's obvious talent, they are certain that Rex and the Jets staff of the best defensive coaches in the NFL won't be able to do so either. Watch Mario Williams disappear from the NFL stuck in Buffalo, the NFL equivalent of the Lost Planet
Oh wow I didn't even think of this. Thanks for letting us all know the truth about Aaron Maybin's future. Who knows what we might've thought! Thanks so much for weighing in on the subject.
I am very much rooting for Maybin to succeed with our Jets. He seems like a good guy. He seems like he's legitmately upset about his struggles in Buffalo - you have to respect that, he could just be like whatever and happy about the $$$. But he truly is trying to improve and wants to succeed. I'd take him on my team anyday.
This! I don't have the level of confidence in Maybin that a lot of folks around here do. Still, the guy doesn't know how to give up, when he's had every reason to and every opportunity to. He didn't care when nobody believed in him, and he doesn't care that people are just waiting for him to fail. He just keeps working. I can't wait to see what he can do.
The problem has nothing to do with coaching and technique. The fact is, Maybin is not big enough, and never will be, to handle NFL offensive linemen in the run game. Hell, he can't even handle them in a pass rush. I'm not trying to be a dick, but the guy has to sprint around the field hoping no one can get a hand on him because if they do, he's done. Unless Rex and his "NFL quality coaches" can teach a 220 lb guy how to hold his own against guys 100 lbs more than him, coaching won't matter with Maybin one bit.
If he brings the same thing he brought last season I'll be thrilled. He provided a consistent edge rush on 3rd down...that's his role & anything else he brings is gravy.
He handled NFL offensive linemen just fine last season in pass rush situations and he certainly did much more than just sprint around the field homing no one can get a hand on him. You didn't watch him last year if that's what you think. He was successfully using a variety of pass rushing moves by the end of the season. Maybin was also towards the top of the list in sacks per snap rate last year. I agree that coaching won't help his weight. Age and a good nutritionist will though.
I'm inclined to agree with you on Maybin. I like him personally, but he's a one-trick pony. If used on obvious passing downs he can be very effective using his speed and you don't have to worry about a RB running thru the huge hole he creates by running so far upfield. My question to you is - how did Buffalo use him? Why was he such a failure? Because anyone can see he's fast as hell and would be an asset on 3rd down passing situations.
