I think he would be a great choice as a back up. Good enough to push Darnold and start if ever needed.

They both have red hair. Coincidence? I think not.

He would obviously be a good player (didn't he beat Sam last season?).

Bengals save $17m in cap by cutting him...not sure how much of that was gonna be his but I don't know if he'd move his fam to NY/NJ for a couple mil.

I'm sure he would drive up a bit further for 2m if he was offered the Pats job and the chance to do something in his career.

I'm all for signing Dalton to give us a competent backup. But, I don't get this whole "Darnold needs to be pushed" idea as if he's too complacent now.

Darnold is still in year three of development and unfortunately because of a bad offense/bad offensive coach, he’s most likely going to have periods where he still struggles this year. The last thing we need is the morons writing for the New York dirt rags calling for Andy Dalton in week seven. We definitely need a competent back up because we don’t have one on the roster right now but having a guy like Dalton could create more problems then he would solve.

not to mention there are probably a handful of teams that he could start for right now. I would expect the Jaguars to take a look

Not a fan of bringing in an alternative the natives could call for if they got restless but that is also not good enough to be a long-term answer. The Jets have blown themselves up several times when that scenario was in play over the decades.

Fales and Morgan are a fine backup/developmental combo for the Jets.

We just drafted a QB that management loves. Hell no.

Agreed. If Sam's too complacent now then we need to cut bait with him immediately.

I'd rock with Dalton as a backup and Morgan as the rostered #3. We can carry 3 it's not a ridiculous proposition.

I have to believe Dalton wants to go somewhere where either either he can compete or he's going to be a backup on a really good team for a year like Jameis Winston did.

Couple of spots for him to compete or start; San Diego, Chicago (before the weird Nick Foles trade at least), or Denver.

Couple of spots for him to be a backup with a really good team; Green Bay, Kansas City, or Atlanta.

I'd be interested in him but I don't think he'll have much interest in coming here. He could have a season like Tannehill had with Tennessee last year if he goes to SD or Denver (if they fixed the o-line issues).

I think we've seen enough of Darnold to know that he's going to be the Jet QB going forward no matter what, so I don't think the majority of fans are going to get restless if he has a bad game now and then. The question then becomes, what if he leads the Jets to a winning record and then gets hurt? Do you jeopardize a possible playoff appearance on the skills of Fales and Morgan? We saw what happened last year with a green QB coming off the bench. If not for that, the Jets might have made the playoffs. If one of these accomplished and experienced QB's is willing to come here and backup Darnold for a reasonable price, that's a pretty good insurance policy.

Since you mentioned moving to NY, I wonder with the death toll in Ny, how could any draftee or free agent move there or NJ. They must have reservations.

Andy Dalton lol @ only 32 years of age is not going to agree to become a BACKUP to a 22 year old Sam Darnold ha!

Reality Jet fans, reality; as this is not Madden.

And how and/or why is this even a discussion on a Jets board when he could become an immediate starter for a lot more $$$ with teams such as New England and more than likely, Jacksonville?

Non topic here folks; QBs like Dalton will never come to NY, maybe NYG; but not with Sam Darnold already here and for the next 10+ years at least (they won't be).

TB didn't pay TB over $100,000,000M over two years for TB to ride TBs bench while Dalton starts (while pissing Buccaneer fans off).

Andy Dalton is not going to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, neither.

I totally agree. Listen, My name says it, and I just counted on my fingers to be sure, lol. 30 years, filled with more lowlights than highlights. I’m loyalty is to the team, not any specific player. They come and go. I don’t care if fans begin to rumble if Sam stinks. But just like you said, I want a security blanket in case of emergency.

Well maybe you should become more loyal to the true great talents and players like Sam Darnold because it's obvious the Johnson's have never made you happy.

Who would you put your faith in on winning a SB? Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams or Hess and Woody Johnson? lol

I'm going with these current PLAYERS (over a winless franchise dating back to 68-69).

The players who make plays on Sundays is who I root for and I couldn't care less if they never showed Woody Johnson's face on the big screen either.

I’ll give you my two cents. We need a competent back up that can come in case of an injury, not as an either or. Last year was a disaster without a back up, but, Having said that, the last thing we need is a QB competition or extra push for Sam, a young QB still trying to find his way with a revamped offense.

Exactly. To bring in a Cam Newton, Andy Dalton or Winston etc is only asking (begging) for another Sanchez/Tebow locker room, media driven and locker room divider type of circus.

Which is why you DRAFT ONE.

Joe Douglas did an awesome job kicking the tires on a very talented QB prospect out of the draft - just as N.E did awesome drafting both Matt Cassel and Jimmy G to develop under Brady ala it's better to draft your own before flipping them for draft pick(s).

If this kid shows awesome talent over the next 2-3 preseason(s) and also performs during 2-5 spot starts in replace of Sam Darnold over the next 2-3 years?

Well then JD will easily flip him for a 2nd round draft pick ala Casel/Garoppolo in order to re-vamp our much improved O-Line...

(now that's how you protect Sam and your starting QB).

I bet he ends up somewhere with a better chance of starting, like Jacksonville.

I think Matt Moore or Joe Flacco is more realistic.

Not necessarily a fair comparison, but David Fales feels too much like Luke Falk and James Morgan should first have to show he's capable of being the #2.
