Ok Im throwing mine out there before it gets totally ridiculous. I think we have the ability to make a few huge moves this offseason and set ourselves up for the next 5-6 years as perennial superbowl contenders. Again, this is my IDEAL?.but still pretty darn realistic IMHO?..

Signings: (obviously totally estimated contract numbers for arguments sake)
Terdell Sands NT 5 years 15 million 6 million SB
Asante Samuel CB 5 years 36 million 10 million SB
Eric Steinbach LG 5 years 40 million 12 million SB
Daniel Graham: 4 years 12 million, 3 mil SB

    Trades:
    2nd Rounder for Michael Turner

Extensions: (all other RFA?s to 1 year tenders)
Rhodes: 5 years 30 million 10 mil SB
Cotchery: 6 years 28 million 9 mil SB
Turner: 5 years 25 mil 8 mil SB

Cuts: no one speaks about how much cutting these back loaded salaries could save)
    Jmac
    Barlow
    Kendell
    Ramsey
    Kimo
    Barrett

Draft: I wont put actual names in yet since the board will obviously be a lot different come draft time but these should be the priorities and our first 3 picks could each be rookie starters.

1-3) Best available OLB (pass rusher to challenge and hopefully beat out Hobson), RT (groom and take over for clement), RG (groom and take over for Moore

    5-7: Depth

    Team:

    QB: Penny, Clemens, low rounder
RB: Turner, Washington, Houston (75% of carries to Turner, 25% to Washington)
FB: Posiask-Graham-journeyman (I see the tightends being used in this role mostly)
TE: Baker-Graham (great 2 tight end set allowing penny or Clemens to find holes in the zone)
WR: Coles, Cotch, Smith, Dwight, low rounder or journeyman
    OT: Brick, Clement, 2nd rounder
    OG: Steinbach, moore, 3rd rounder
    OC: Nick Mangold, Teague

NT: Sands, Moore, Pouha (all BIG players we can rotate to keep fresh)
DE: Ellis, D Rob, Ball, Mosely (I think he?d do well here),mid rounder
OLB: Thomas, 1st rounder, Hobson, Chatum
    ILB: Vilma, Barton, Shlegal, Kassell
CB: Samuel, Dyson, Coleman, miller, poteat
SS: Eric Smith (I think he?ll start), Eric Coleman
FS: Rhodes (pro bowler this year), Washington

We might now sign ALL those players but we definitely COULD with the money we have. We?ll likely sign more like 2 of them and then 4 journeyman type players. But this would be my IDEAL. I don?t see any weaknesses here. Our offense would be loaded with playmakers at every position, perfect for Pennington to spread the ball to. Turner and Washington would bring great balance to the running game. With the growth of the Brick and Mangold in the offseason and hungry rookies breathing down Clements and Moore?s necks and then throw in one of the best guards in the league, we could have a top 5 oline.

On the defensive side We have the BIG front 3 necessary in this front (3 capable NT?s to rotate), OLB speed off the edge (and w/ DRob at DE), (also hoping Vilma can tack on 10 pounds) and potentially one of the best young secondaries in the league. Combined with the fact that we are one year into the system I?d think this team would have to be considered a super bowl contender.

Yea I agree with you. I like it. But I doubt we'll be able to get Assante Samuel away from the Pats. I mean we can but come on we know the pats would try anything but to let him land in our hands. Watch them franchise him and then trade him to the NFC.

There is no way in hell the Jets would sign 4 players like that. We'll be lucky to sign one. And why would we need Graham?

This isnt baseball where you can go on a mass free agent signing in the off season most teams will sign one maybe two big conctracts other thatn you build through the draft, and signing all these big contracts doesnt nesecarily work. Look at what the Skins did the past few years.

Why would the Jets pay 3 million dollars per year for a back up tightend when you could find a serviceable rookie in the draft for a quarter of that?

Agreed. I'm even leery if we should consider entering the bidding war for Samuels or Clements.

Folks, having this much cap room is a blessing, but every dollar should be spent wisely. We're going to be good next year, but we need to build to be SB contenders for 2-3 years from now, not tomorrow.

Otherwise, we'll be the Redskins of the AFC.

This may be posturing, but in the Jet articles today, Tannenbaum was quoted as saying that they won't necessarily be big players in free agency and remain dedicated to building a core through the draft...

No Turner, he is too risky. Most guys would be solid relieving the best RB in football, remember Blaylock. I do not know much about Sands, whats the deal with him?

I don't like the idea of signing guys like Sands, or the kid from Green Bay, or any other unknowns to be our Nose Tackle. If these guys are capable of anchoring a 3-4 defense they wouldn't be made available for one stinkin' second. 3-4 nose tackle is arguably the hardest position to solidify in a defense... No way we pick one up off the free agent market, especially for cheap. We haven't been able to find a regular NT since Ferg peaced out now we plan on sticking some Raider reject like Sands at NT?? I realize the man is huge, but this position requires way more than that. We need to draft a real NT prospect in the mould of Wilfork or Casey Hampton.

I'm sick of the revolving door at DT. Josh Evans, Legree, Reed, McGlockton, bla bla bla.... We must decide whether we like Robertson at NT or not, if not draft an NT and move DRob to DE.

    That's a damn good plan...

    my two cents...

Keep Kendall around for mentoring and back up, or maybe move to RG and install Steinbach on the left...

NOSE TACKLE can't be an afterthought...if it's not the first round pick, it's the high 2nd from Washington. Agree that pass-rushing LB is the other 1-2 priority. After that, it's gravy.

With so many teams 30 mil and more under the cap. I bet you will see more highest contracts ever. Every yr they get bigger. In 2006 offseason they had the highest payed Guard(Hutch), Center(Bentley), S(Archuelta) just in last yrs FA. I think the DE from Houston is now the highest payed DE.

I can see Samuel getting 7 yrs 56 mil 18 mil SB, almost like an Abe deal

I'd have no problems with us opening up the flood-gates for Steinbach at Guard. If we can land him our offensive line would be outstanding. I'd be satisfied with him being our only major signing even. We can draft a NT, every-down RB, and passrushing OLB with our first 3 picks most likely.

That would leave CB as a position of need still, but I don't honestly expect us to take care of all our needs in one offseason. This is a process fellas.

I like it, but we don't need Daniel Graham. Baker is a good TE and we could go for another cheaper TE. Same deal with Steinbech. Brandon Moore is okay. If we want help there, we can find a cheaper solution (Kris Dielman?).
