I think the Jets should take a long look at acquiring Braylon Edwards. I'm not a huge fan of any of the options at 17, and none of the receivers available is nearly as good as Edwards could be.

I think #17 and Brad Smith, a Mangini favorite, could get it done, and I think it would make a lot of sense from our perspective.

I wrote a longer piece on Miles Austin, Edwards, as well as a short draft preview here.

I agree. I mentioned the 17 and Smith earlier, but I think we could potentially swing a deal with Cleveland for that. This past season has lowered his value a bit, but I'd assume he returns to form on a team with a chance to compete. He also seems to have an easier time with difficult catches than the simple ones, thanks to that wonderful concentration flaw. Could be a boost with an inexperienced QB starting off the season.

When Brad Smith has a great year at WR I'm gonna put a big I told-you-so in my sig. We already have a tall, fast WR and now that he has Henry Ellard coaching him he's going to shine. The old WR coach was prolly just an emergency option at OC in case Shott left. I'm saying that because Noel Mazzone's career success mostly came as a college play caller. Take him off the list of great WR coaches.

I Rather go after a tougher receiver or just draft one. Edwards is soft with average hands.

I saw Edwards drop too many easy catches last year for me to be thrilled at the prospect of this deal, however it it happens, it happens, and he does has potential.

my biggest fear about Edwards is that if he comes here he will be buried worse than Coles ever was due to the dropped passes.... the media scrutiny he'll face will be exponentially worse.

    I'd rather keep the pick.

Brad Smith is 6'2'', that seems tall to me. I think Brad's athletic ability is equal to that of a top ten WR. And once he has the ball in his hands he's magic.

I think Braylon has proven he can do it in this league, which none of the draft choices can claim. I don't think he can be moved for the 17th pick and brad smith. It would be awesome if he could, but I think the Browns will be asking for more.

No disrespect intended, but I think you're overrating Smith a lot.

I wouldn't mind seeing Braylon Edwards here. We have a huge need at WR, and he has a ridiculously high ceiling. If he can get over whatever psychological thing caused all of the drops last year, he could be a beast like he was the year before last. I suppose we'd still need a QB to throw to him. He thrived under good Derek Anderson two years ago, then stunk under bad Derek Anderson last year.

Still, due to his ridiculous upside and our huge need at WR, I wouldn't mind taking a shot at him.

Love your stuff Mack, I really think Edwards and 5 for Brad Smith and our #1 is a good deal. I would rather keep our pick and flip it for 2-3 picks by sliding back in round one. But picking up Edwards would be a great deal for us. However, on your draft preview, I really really hope Jackson isnt tops on our board. That would annoy me. He is essentially a younger Kenyon Coleman, he is a good run stopper, but a very weak pocket pusher.

He dropped the ball a shit ton the year before too. He's been dropping the ball at a very high rate for more than half his career.

If he came here and continued to drop the ball at such a high rate people would want to burn him at the stake. He sure does have some nice highlights though.

I don't think you trade away a middle-1st for a gamble of a player like Edwards if you are Rex Ryan. He wants to build that defense first, and with a draft heavy in defensive playmakers like it seems we have this year, you don't give away 17 for a wideout who has a lot of potential but also has led the league in drops the past 2 seasons... why would you get a guy like that to help out a young QB? Did it work well for Quinn or Anderson? Imagine how much differently people would view those 2 QBs if Edwards catches those balls. I want a sure-handed wideout that instills confidence in a QB.

I think 17 brings us a defensive player.

The offense needs a playmaker far more than the defense needs a rotational guy who will evolve into a starter someday, which is what a defensive pick would basically be. Don't get me wrong, I would love for the Jets to draft someone like Tyson Jackson or one of the USC linebackers... I just don't think it'll happen.

Braylon Edwards is only a risk because he dropped a lot of passes this past year. Dropped passes is a mental issue, and while it is true that some people never get over it (McCareins comes to mind) it can be corrected. Further, Edwards is the kind of talent that it is worth trying to fix it for, because Braylon Edwards on his game is in the class of Randy Moss, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall... etc. None of the receivers coming out in the draft have that sort of physical talent, getting Edwards would be getting a better player than any of them, and seasoned already too.

Just look what Plaxico did for Eli, and how lost Eli is without him. Just watch how Cutler will look next season without Brandon Marshall. Look how Tom Brady's numbers exploded when he got Randy Moss.

Getting Braylon Edwards would potentially be giving this offense the big athletic gamebreaker that we haven't had since Al Toon.

yeah edwards might have a lot of potential.. 2007 he had almost 1,300 recieving yards and 16 TDs.. which are GREAT numbers.. but aside from that year he has never topped 900 yards and only had 3 TDs 2008 and 2005 and had 6 in 2007.. i look at this and honestly don't think he's worth #17... if the organization doesn't like our options at 17.. i'd rather a trade down.. then just trade for edwards.. but with cleveland saying that they already have been offered at least a 1st round pick.. im fine with going thru the draft...
