The Jets are negotiating a new contract for wide receiver Laveranues Coles and, barring complications, it should be finalized by Friday, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Coles' decision to report to the off-season conditioning program Monday, after skipping the first week to protest his current contract, was a strong indication that the two sides were moving toward an agreement.

Coles has two years, $11 million remaining on his current deal, and he's looking for a long-term extension. He was prepared to miss the entire offseason program, not showing up until training camp, unless he received a new contract.

The Jets took the unusual step of offering to guarantee the $11 million, a proposal initially rejected by Coles. After playing hardball last year with Pete Kendall, resulting in an ugly contract dispute that ended with Kendall's trade to the Redskins, the Jets took a flexible approach with Coles.

I don't think they are going to extend rhodes this offseason...

I think that will happen next offseason...and I am not sure if that it the best thing to do.

If they don't sign rhodes this year, but they sign bitch ass coles, i'm gonna be pissed. Rhodes, Harris, Revis, Mangold and a few others were the only reasons we didn't go 0-16 this season. He was our mvp and we have to sign him. We can't make him feel like we don't want him

This is a good move, you have to reward players that put their bodies on the line. Why would anyone want to play here if we dont reward our captains and team leaders? Players know week after week Coles put his body on the line, week after week he endured rough, tough practices. You have to reward a leader like that to so show the locker room the team cares (or make them think they care).

LC is the most underrated WR in the NFL, I'm dying to see what he can do with a QB with an arm. Chad held him back for so many years. I like this, I know Tangini did the right thing here, and I know they didnt break the bank when doing so.

Watch as it's a 4 year deal with a hefty bonus and he decides to retire due to injuries after 2 years.

finally! I'm happy about this because now we don't have to deal with the headache of "the jets aren't taking care of their current players". I don't think the jets will extend rhodes this season but i have a feeling it will happen during the season. Like around week 10 or so.

All this shows is that the Jets are full of shit when it comes to their so called policies. They have no policies and they lose more credibility with everything they do.

If we can't strike a deal with Rhodes this year...he'll be franchised for '09. Either way he's a Jet for two more seasons.

There aren't many guys like Rhodes, so having him for 2 more seasons is good, but this is now his prime. His #'s are only going to get better, especially with a pass rush and a run D... he will make a pro bowl, and then paying him will be nearly impossible without losing someone else.

How much will Chad cost in 2009?

5.7 million salary plus whatever prorated bonus money he has left. The total bonuses were 23 million. Cap charge this year is 9 million, 8.7 million in '09, then 5.3 in '10 and 10.5 in '11.

And if that doesn't absolutely scream out to you what this FO thinks about Clemens then you need to hit yourself in the head with a 2x4.

Rhodes will for sure be franchised if he's not resigned long term. I'd like to lock him up right now though, he deserves a new deal more than this bum (Coles)...

I agree that Rhodes should be the priority, but maybe Coles was easier to come to terms with?

Just specualtion on my part, but I see Rhodes as wanting a big time deal, that we cannot do untill the D-rob situation plays itself out. Hopefully after he is cut we will see some progress on the Rhodes front.

I see it this way also. You get Coles out of the way, which, at this point, is basically an "obligatory" contract with a multitude of STFU clauses in it. In my opinion, it will not be for all that much money, but will shut him up for now and get him out of the limelight.

Then you turn to Rhodes and start dealing with the serious money. Just my opinion, but that's the way I see Tanny handling this. Get Coles out of the way so that you can spend the wad on the guy who will mold the future of the team, not tear down the present.

we're probably a last place team w/o coles

    cotchery/smith/stuckey=no chance to score points

i'd like to take hardy in the 2nd and have coles/cotchery/hardy as our top three wr's, then we'd have smith and stuckey as #4 and #5 receivers, where they belong (for the time being)

I have a feeling he will be cut, and we will have the room to resign rhodes. Plus the cap will go up again at the end of the year, reports are saying to 123M next year and then maybe up to 132M in 2010.. If they renew the CBA.
