for any succesful 3-4 to dominate,u need a good pass rushing linebacker and bryan thomas sucks, for instance past 3-4 teams that have been successful, ravens-terell suggs, giants- lawernce taylor, patriots-willie mcgenist, steelers-joey porter, chargers-shawn merrimen, u good the drift, if we had a beast like arrington or abraham then maybe our anemic pass rush will make it harder for teams to comeback in the fourth wen we only rush 4 bc lkets face it, bryan thomas aint getting the job done, and where is the originality and imagination with the blitzes? if you wanna run the 3-4 u need to be scheming up somethin good, not fake blitz kerry rhodes 15 times and then blitz him, i wanna see some zone blitzes, some all outs, something bc with the time the jets arte giving other qbs, i could go out there and toss some td passes

ps, how awesome is it that the dolphins blow?? i know the jets arent the bears but the dolphins really really suck, i love it:finssuck::finssuck: :finssuck: :finssuck:

I disagree very much, Linebackers can only pass rush in the 3-4 if the DT is occupying the centre fully, and distracting/dominating a guard. In the transition from 4-3 to 3-4 it is the Defensive tackle that needs to step up as that is the only position that needs to make up for 2 ppl with one player

There is NO NEED for a pass rush if you can't stop the run. I disagree with the original poster as well.

Pass-rushing 3-4 LBs are a dime a dozen. Just think how many good college ends there are that are too light to be ends in the NFL, they ALL are 3-4 backers (assuming they have at least some lateral movement). However, I do believe that NT is not a #1 priority. REmember, next year we'll get Tui Aleilefaleula back as well as Sione Pouha. Them's got some meat. Maybe Rashad Moore will stick around, too. I guess, in a roundabout way, I agree, we need a passrushing LB for our 3-4.

A pass rusher on the outside is definitely needed, but a stud NT is still number 1 priority for this porous defense....

I'm up in the air with NT or premier franchise back who can hit the ground running. If you're saying that NT is not a priority need, the wool is pulled very far over your eyes.

I believe this CS and FO understand the fact that you build from the lines out; they addressed the Offensive Line this year (with more work to do, granted) and they will address the Defensive Line next year.

I wouldn't put Thomas in with the elite 3-4 linebackers mentioned, but he had a pretty solid game last week. I watched it again last night, and he was always around the ball or making the tackle. And while I don't think D-Rob is the long term answer, he made a key stop in the third quarter causing the Fins to settle for a field goal (making the game 6-3). A touchdown there results in a Jet loss (ultimately).

Our defense needs a run stuffing DT, a cover corner, and a pass rusher in that order.

Our offense could use an upgrade at RB, RT, TE, and both guard slots.

If we want to talk needs, we really need 3 new downlineman. Probably an ILB and an OLB. We need a safety to step in opposite Rhodes. We need Miller to develop. We need a RT, LG, TE.

Pouha will be like 29 going into next season, right?

I actually think Thomas has been playing relatively well. While he still is a liability in coverage he's solid 3-4 LB and if nothing else, the Jets are finally getting some value for their first round pick.

I'm not sure who's been doing it, but we have covered the TE of the opposition very well this year.

    Quote from Star-Ledger:

Head coach Eric Mangini praised Thomas, who is making the adjustment to 3-4 outside linebacker from defensive end this season, for his play in last Sunday's win over the Dolphins. Mangini said, "He made good plays in the running game. He did a real nice job against the tight ends and (offensive) tackles. He just played good, solid football, playing within the scheme,"

You do not need a stud nose tackle in a 3-4, but you do need someone that knows how to play the position well and is not worried about stats. Kind of like a fullback on offense. I remember Joe Nash of the Seahawks back in the 80's, he would get double and tripled all game, but he freed things up for the linebackers behind him and he kept coming every play knowing he would get pounded.

Any chance we can make a push to land Briggs from Chicago? I believe he is a UFA after the season.

Remember that Thomas has only been playing OLB for 6 games now. The fact that our DL sucks also only allows the other teams linemen to put more blockers on our LB's. IMO Thomas has adjusted pretty well to a new position. I would like for us to get a pass rushing LB in the draft next year and let Thomas and Hobson fight it out for the other OLB position.

I take it others were able to decipher this thread starter... please translate... thank you.

Geeze, is this really how our kids learn to spell in school now? Nevermind that, coherent sentences would be nice too....

The man had 11 tackles SUNDAY and 4 pressures! Yet, in your opinion, he sucks! Speak for yourself! I like the guy and how he plays even without a widebody tying up two guys!
