Randy Messenger must feel worthless this morning. Imagine being a major league player and telling your friends you were traded for Ourmanno.
Wow. Another Mets fan that has some fond memories of Benitez? Despite the fact that he melted in big games, the man was money. Statistically, he had a several year period in which he was among the best closers in baseball.
Just think back to Braden Looper, who blew unimportant and important games indiscriminately. I'd take a Benitez over a Looper every day of the week. Its worth the gamble. The Marlins won the world series with a Benitez clone closing for them (Ugeuth Urbina). The D-Backs won with BK Kim.
Urbina was better than Benitez. Arizona won in spite of Kim. Remember, Randy Johnson had to be used in relief late in the 2001 WS. I don't see how anyone could defend Benitez, especially Mets fans. Benitez is arguably the worst big game player I've ever come across while watching sports. I suppose if you were a Cubs fan, Benitez would seem to be pretty cool. He could save 30 games a year and would never be in position to blow a playoff game.
