I do not do this very often, but some of threads on here are just idiotic. I do not mean to offend anyone and that is why I will not name threads, but the Jets are our team and we are enamoured fans. Is there always some kind of slight controversy going on; at times. Are things always as bad as they seem? Probably not. Woulda, shoulda and coulda threads are easy to write after the fact. Granted the Jets have had about 3 stinkers this year and a couple marginal ones, but our team has a fighting chance at the playoffs damn it. Remember last year? Ugh!!! Guys we were done by mid-season. We were hardly competitive. Clemens did not take advantage of his situation. Our offensive line was beyond pathetic and we could not stop the other team from running on us to save our life. There were quite a few times last year where I did not even bother to turn on the TV and watch; I would be doing something else. You say, how could you? As 41 year fan and think I have seen it all; when our team is bad it just pains me to watch cause I have lived the horror many times to know it is best avoided in such situations. This year is one of the best turn-arounds the Jets have ever put together. Granted we are not done yet. All of the focus should be on Seattle. That is all that is important right now. Without a win in Seattle against a team with the 30th ranked defense and something like the 27th ranked offenses there are simply no excuses. Take the west coast garbage and throw it out the window, and it doesn't matter what we have done in the past; it is all about the product we put on the field this Sunday. Everyone on the team right down to the waterboy should be totally on thier game. This game is a game where you go in and take care of business and don't for a second let up; you can't give a team like Seattle a reason to think they can win the game, especially with the fact that we have put ourselves in position to win the division outright by winning out the remainder of the season. That is just 2 games for those counting; just 2 games!!! If it were 4 or 5 games I would consider the odds a bit challenging, but given the teams we have to play; if we are serious about being in the playoffs we win both of those games with no crapping around. We need solid execution. Creative, but sensible, play calling. Our defense has to show up for the rest of the season. To win in the NFL when you talk playoffs you must play good to great defense. Our Special Teams have to be on. The offense has to pound the rock. We need good running and no fumbles - ball control. TJ is team MVP - he earned it, but we have to get Leon more involved in the games in terms of touches. The guy seems to make great things happen or at least he is a legitimate threat to do so every time he touches the ball. Next, it wouldn't hurt to throw a couple of deep balls during the game, but for God's sake put Clowney and Leon in the game to try it. We need the fastest guys on the field to go deep. Have TJ in the backfield on such a play and a flea-ficker might be a good thing to pull out of the box if needed. Clearly play-action passing is the way to go for a deep passing game because it buys you the time you need. Now, I said just do it a couple of times a game; beyond that you have to stick to your bread and butter. 5 to 15 yard passes are very effective and Favre puts enough velocity on these type of throws that there is low risk of making a stupid throw. We need to use the run to set up the pass; not the other way around. We need to be a run 1st team. Why? Our running backs almost never fumble. Or, let's just say it is very infrequent. Plus, we are bound to play in bad weather at times the rest of the year. I guess I am done ranting and I realize that guys like DeathbyJets and WinstonBiggs may have been able to do a better job than I here, but I get frustrated with some of the stuff I see threads about. Anyway, the Jets will kick ass this weekend; bank on it. Go Jets!!!!
It is a message board with a wide array of opinions. Sometimes people don't even mean what they say, they are just venting their frustration. People on here are passionate about their team, and it can be a love hate relationship.
i agree....i log on sometimes and love the threads or hate them....but one thing never changes is my love for the JETS!!!!!
One of the more complicated elements about the Jets this year is trying to make sense of the run first option, and whether this really is a run first team. Jones is the workhorse, and he hardly ever fumbles, has good ypc, and avoids injury. Washington is a great changeup and always is a threat to break one. But, when the Jets do run the ball on first down, they often seem to not pick up much. This is a very good OL, but not an overpowering one, imo. They probably rank better at complex blocking than in straight ahead blocking, although I hvae no stats to back that up. Just what we see on the field. I think what works best for this team is keeping the opponent guessing. The overall mix should probably include more running plays, but I also suspect some here place too much emphasis on that since many short pass plays are really aspects of the running game. You also have to take into account your opponent. This week, for example, Seattle at least by the numbers has a poor pass D. Just some comments...
The opinions are not at issue. Everyone can have their own opinion; that is what makes the board fun. I was just saying that at times some of the threads are just a bit ridiculous. Case and point; take the thread about the Jets and Phins making a deal. Like seriously, does anyone truly think that they are going to get together before the game and agree to a tie just to keep NE out of the playoffs? That is simply retarded.
All good points. That is why we pounce on Seattle and don't let them come up for air. We need to be mean this weekend. BTW, I think Gholston's secret middle name is Alex. So, his initials, VAG, seem appropriate.
Honestly I wasn't expecting much from the Jets this year. After all our FA pickups, I still wasn't convinced that we were going for it all this year, but after we got Favre I started to see what we were going for. Really it doesn't matter to me if we don't make it. I've seen the team make progress. There has been some horrible defensive scheming, no doubt, nothing another off-season and a new DCord(or getting the right pieces) wont fix. I'm pretty stoked about a lot of things on this team, and our position moving forward. What hurt us this year was lack of depth at some positions: lb, nt, and we solve those problems we'll be fine. I'd also like better 4-3 scheming so we can compensate for when key players on our d-line get injured. As of now we put too much pressure on Ellis/Coleman/Jenks to stay healthy and they're clearly not, thus we are losing the battle at the line of scrimmage on defense. Mosely/Pouha/DeVito/whoever fill in nicely on the DLine - you can see the few times we lined up in 4-3 (against NE and Tenn..I think) we were getting some nice pressure on the QB. The other positive thing to note was this week I think we were finally able to correctly play Sutton's scheme..lol. We limited the gains on Losman's passes, and we were able to sniff out those block-then-catch passes to Lynch/TE. It's also horrible watching our LBs try to drop back in coverage. Watching Farrior do it with ease against Baltimore was a sight to see...he had the short ranged passes blocked with ease..Barton is painful to watch drop back in coverage. I think he'll be gone this off-season and we'll probably replace him with a Harris clone. It's too bad because the man is a great run-stuffer AND a great tackler, but I think is just too one dimensional to fit this team. But overall, you gotta like the promise this team is showing you. Maybe it's because I'm a new fan and have seen crap since 04, but progress is progress, and I'm willing to collapse this season in favor of addressing the clear depth issues that we have in this team. Long run baby
^^^^^talisaynon, how did you arrive at that TGG name????? It sounds like you coulda been the one to throw the shoe at the Pres's head.
1) I'm a natural contrarian cause it pisses people off 2) I'm a Yankee fan, not a Mets fan. lol Edit: oh wait I thought you were asking how you got to TGG cause you're not negative lol it's an sn my dad gave me when I was 11 and have had it ever since. It means "from Talisay" in my native tongue
thank you for writing this, It pains me to read the negativity on here and to read posts stating we should muff the playoffs to keep our 2nd rd pick and get Cowher. Playoffs spots in the NFL are a Rite not a privelege you never ever give them back. Football is once a week and in my mind sacred and there is nothing better then playing meaningful and this team has given us plenty of that and has the chance to give us a few more, lets all put the negativity aside, planning for future,etc... and take a page from the rest of the Homers around the country and support our team in the best way we can. I am a season ticket holder who has not made a game now in three seasons, partly living 2.5 hrs from stadium being it the other that I have two very young children now and giving up a whole Sunday uses up all my get out of house in one day. I am going next Sunday and am pumped beyond belief, if we win and Miami wins and it is gonna just be awesome. We should be happy we will get the chance to have at a minimum one game of this magnitude this year with the whole NFL world watching
Nice post. I think the players need to step up and play like they were playing early in the year. I feel like it'll happen this Sunday. It's weird that it has to be explained to fans that the team they like isn't bad, isn't it?
Thanks for saying this. I gave up saying these kinds of things here a long time ago out of frustration, but that doesn't mean I stopped thinking them. I cannot believe the amount of kvetching that goes on here. My other team, the Packers, made a QB move that( I hope everyone agrees?) was more controversial than the Jets made, and then went from 13-3 and an OT championship game loss to 5-9 this year and already mathemaitically eliminated -- and guarnateed just the second losing season in 18 years (!) -- and yet on Packer boards there is actually LESS whining going an as you see here IMO -- about a team that went from 4-12 to 9-5 and is leading its division! Over the course of this season I have really turned into a fan of the whole team -- heck if I had to pick a favorite player today that I love to watch it would definitely be Leon, not Favre -- but at the same time ... at the risk of offending some people ... I have to admit I'm starting to wear pretty thin with some of the fans of the team. I'm not used to this kind of stuff. I've always heard about the reputation of Jets fans, but I didn't have any reason to believe it til now. Thanks GreenHornet (and many, many others here -- the majority of regular posters still) for showing me that that kind of attitude is a minority. [Well GreenHornet, if you were afraid of backlash, I suspect I just stepped in front of the bullets for you. But WTH, it needs to be said, you're saying it so I will too.] Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines when I made my "prediction" thread a few days ago that they'd put in Clowney for Coles for at lest 3-5 snaps. I hope they try it.
I think this is a good point but I also feel like those who know what they are talking about should have a right to criticize. There are a ton of people on the board who really don't know the game and start threads willy nilly, usually including the terms "sucks" or "fire". My personal opinion is that despite the 4-12 record this season, you don't take some of the drastic measures we've taken this offseason to put such an unpredictable product on the field. This team may very well be middle of the pack next year because Favre could be gone and we'll put the unproven Clemens back at starting QB. The Jets have put out lots of cash but still need guys in the secondary. Will we have the money to take care of this? The biggest issue, and I think we can agree on this now, is that our coaches do not know how to maximize the talent on this team, or how to gameplan in a manner that will put the same product on the field every week. All season, the halftime adjustments have been nil. Calvin Pace is not the player he was in Arizona. Kris Jenkins' effectiveness has diminished because teams are running away from him. So why are we weak on the outside? Because all season the playcalling leaned on Jenkins, and there was no plan B! We are consistently getting killed in the passing game despite having Revis and Rhodes (who was supposed to be a Pro Bowler and now seems run of the mill) and now Ty Law, who has the smarts to make plays but hasn't had much chance to. I don't feel that the Jets are one of the league's top teams, and I honestly didn't even feel that was after the NE and Tennessee wins. After Tennessee, I started to believe, but I wanted to see it happen again, then came Denver, and my expectations were proven legitimate. When I look at the teams the Jets should strive to be like, I think of Pittsburgh, Miami, Tennessee, the Giants, etc. Really, everyone in playoff consideration deserves to be there right now except for Denver and the Jets. We need coaches that can guarantee an equal performance week to week. I believe the players are giving the same effort each game, but there's no rhythm. Remember when Rhodes used to blitz 5-10 times per game? Remember the Elam blitz that caused the fumble in Buffalo? Shit, we were throwing the ball deep off play action back in weeks 1-4 before the running game even got going. Now we have the AFC's top rusher and we're still throwing slants and hooks with 8 guys in the box! Apparently someone thinks this kind of gameplanning is outsmarting the opposition. Maybe they think that being unpredictable will keep teams on their toes and eventually lead big plays for the Jets. Unfortunately, it has lead primarily to poor execution and an extreme lack of go-to plays. When this happens so consistently, smart coaches can look in the mirror and see the problem, but it's not happening, and it will be our downfall (if it is not already). I have to ask myself how Atlanta, Miami, and New England, with the 2 former full of no-names and inexperience, and the latter being aged and without its star QB, can still manage to be as consistently competitive as they are. I think the best explanation is that they play in systems that players are comfortable with, and have coaches who use the players in ways that work instead of making players do things you think should work, but don't. Imagine if any of those coaches worked for the Jets, and had the talent we have....then we'd have a team to believe in.
You're right--the run is most successful when not on first down. Running on first actually seems to have killed several drives. People have there opinions on this but I haven't noticed an uproar about it even though it has gotten me upset. Its a great OP because it is pointing to something of significance but it is so hard to isolate the cause. I really feel for me personally, that if the CS was competent, I wouldn't feel as frustrated with this good season we are having. If the players are doing their best but losing because they are young etc., its much easier to take than if your very good veteran players are playing hard and are outpositioned or outschemed. What is almost impossible to take without cringing is that we have a HOF QB with a great arm who throws 31 passes for 137 yards in a losing effort (what else could be the outcome). It's like the CS committed suicide and took all the players and fans down with them. But overall, I am extremely thankful for TGG and most posters. I have learned a lot and its been great to be part of the fanbase in this way. ROCK ON ALL TGG'ERS! THANKS PETRO!!
I think a lot of the "sunshiners" mistake the "darksiders" intentions... I can't speak for everyone since everyone has their own motivations and ideas and frame of reference... however, as someone who is often posting criticisms on this board... these threads make me feel like some people just don't understand what is going on in the head of the people making these criticisms. Using myself as an example... I'm a die hard Jets fans... you'll be hard pressed to find a day where I'm not dressed in my Green and White stuff at some point during the day. I go to every game and enjoy every game to the fullest extent I can enjoy it. I get annoyed when things don't go right, but when things do go right, like on that Losman fumble / Ellis stoned recovery touchdown... believe me when I say I was jumping up and screaming at the top of my lungs, hugging and giving high fives to just about anyone I could get near. I nearly fell into the row of seats in front of me from freaking out with pure excitement at that play. With that said, gameday is when I get my real enjoyment out of football. Monday through Saturday, I come here to discuss the things that I'm perceiving and thinking and to challenge those who disagree with me to see if they can persuade me in another way. I love this forum as a reference and a place to do football knowledge / intellectual battle with other fans who are just as passionate as I am and love the team as much as I do. I enjoy every second of every argument I have with people on here. The personalities on this board are great and that's what has kept me here since well before the board had to be reset. I don't know if I'm right, but in my opinion most of the doom and gloomers here aren't that way in person, when the time comes for actual football to be played. I don't see anything wrong with people projecting negatively about this team. Personally, I see a coaching situation that I feel isn't going to win us a Super Bowl, and it makes me sad because I think this is easily the best Jets team since '98. I feel like if someone of Parcells caliber were coaching the talent on this team, we'd be unstoppable. I also recognize and understand that a lot of people felt that same way about Tom Coughlin last year, and then he lead the Giants on a miracle run where he won a miracle Super Bowl against an unbeatable team. The story of the Giants in '07 is not only what sports are all about, but it gives me hope that my fears will be overcome in these next couple of weeks and the Jets too will do something miraculous and awesome. When I talk about wanting Cowher in here, what I'm really saying is that I want coaches that are tough and push their team to succeed. If Mangini, Schottenheimer, and Sutton became that starting this Sunday and never look back... then they're my guys. If not, I want the coaches that are those guys. I've been watching Jets football for too long to feel anyway but this (I can't even imagine what the older guys feel). Football is a sport that walks a very tight line... the line between being a world champion, and a guy searching for a new job. I have no preconceived notions of who the next coach should be, just what they should do... whether that's Mangini, Cowher, or someone else who has yet to enter our radar... I'll take whomever is going walk that line straight to a Super Bowl. So, to all the sunshiners who feel that the darksiders are somehow ruining this board or are out of touch with reality... I suggest you take a long look in the mirror because more often than not you guys are just as out of touch with reality or are not seeing the field from a level eye. I personally don't see the need for cheerleader posts the way that others may not see the need for complaining posts. But it is the overall effect of all these posts that makes TGG.com what it is... great.
100% agree. With the talent that we have, we should be consistently good., not marginal most weeks and great some weeks. We are being out coached. the sad part is, Mangini does not have enough experience to know how to fix it. He is over his head. The mantra of "hard work" and "good week of practice" will not do it against good teams. We need to play to our strenghts, create an identity, and learn how to make in-game adustments. This is all coaching. We have the talent, they have the desire, now let's point them in the right direction.
