Interest Quickly Develops in TE Putzier

    By Scout.com

    Date: Mar 2, 2006

The recently released Bronco is already attracting interest from several NFL clubs

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, scout.com has learned that the New York Jets and Houston Texans have strong interest in signing former Denver Broncos TE Jeb Putzier who was released on Wednesday.

The Jets extended an offersheet to the then restricted free agent Putzier last year which Denver wound up matching. The problem is New York doesn't currently have the salary cap room to sign him.

Houston could use a tight end with pass catching skills. They haven't had a good receiver at the tight end position since Billy Miller played for them (2002-2004).

It's also believed that the San Francisco 49ers also have some interest in Putzier. Oft-injured TE Eric Johnson is on the final year of his contract. However, Putzier will be looking for a starting job so the chances of him winding up with San Francisco aren't strong.

He'll probably end up with Kubiak in Houston.

I think it depends on the offense we plan on running. We still have a couple of TEs, even if we don't bring back Baker. The reason we were pursuing Putzier in the first place was to play on the opposite side from Baker in Dinger's 2-TE sets. Unless we plan on using that same sort of offense, the money would be better spent elsewhere.

A co-worker of mine showed me a TE in the draft that's like 6-1+, 245 and runs the 40 in like 4.3, I don't remember the kids name but damn imagine the potential, if we let Baker walk we should look at this kid.

Nice to see Bradway still has influence. He loved Putzier and Jolley because of 'tools', 'athleticism' and 'potential' coming out of college. He caught two TD's in a four year NFL career, none last year. Bradway said a year ago that Putzier, then Jolley had higher grades than any TE entering te draft.. ie Heath Miller.

Oh come on now you know if we had drafted Heath he would have had a shitty years with us and your point would have no merit. Its all about how the players fits the team, with us he would have been a flop.

Have you watched Putzier play? A TE is more than a pass catcher. He is a decent blocker. With Jolley as a pass-catching TE (with a decent QB), and Dreesen showing alot of potential last year, Putzier would be a good fit. He is young and can develop next to Dreesen, and he has NFL experience. If the Jets do not sign Baker, it makes sense to make a run at Putzier, and use the draft pick to take advantage of the deep OL class this year.

This actually makes me wonder if Putzier was TB's idea or Tanny's.
