Nothing pisses me off more than when they show that prick Mel Kiper every year and his lashing of the Jets from back in the day for their selection of Jeff Lageman in '89. Lageman ended up having a pretty damn good career and was one of my favorites in the early 90's. Kiper is a loser.
Lageman turned out to be a surprisingly decent player. The Pats drafted a colossal bust - Hart Lee Dykes only 2 picks after ours. And Green Bay drafted one of the biggest busts of all - Tony Mandarich with the second overall pick. '89 was a pretty shitty draft class overall. We drafted Dennis Byrd in the 2nd round BTW, and Marvin Washington in the 6th.
We could have gotten Andre Rison and probably still taken Lageman in the second round. Lageman turned out ok, though. I kind of liked some of that D, him, Byrd, Washington, Hasty, a year or two later we drafted Mo Lewis.
That's not too bad. I was going to guess it was 56 days before opening night--which is currently 212 days away if you're wondering.
I happen to find that video hilarious. When the commish goes Fullback....and you just hear someone scream, OHH NOOO!!!!
Mandarich actually went on to play a couple of good years in Indy. So not a total bust like many make him out to be.
lmao that full back line was hilarious and the Kyle Brady one my dad gets mad every time his friends bring up that pick
That year was a weird draft, 4 of the 1st 5 guys drafted are in the HOF but the next 5 picks after Deion Sanders turned out to be colossal busts; Broderick Thomas, Tim Worley, Burt Grossman, Sammie Smith and Eric Hill.
I believe he ended up as a guard on Peyton Manning's first O line. I was at that draft, working as an intern for channel 9 sports.
I still laugh at the guy from the Colts yelling "who the hell is Mel Kiper, Jr.?!!!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHiUqL2KLiM
I was at Michigan State and lived in the same dorm as Mandarich. He was ridiculously juiced up during his College years as was the entire MSU team under George Perles. Once he got off steroids, he was a mere shadow of his former self.
To be fair that was one of the only bad picks from that era and Jones did play a while, just not to the level he was drafted at.
Good old WWOR, I used to watch Steampipe Alley every Sunday morning with the flamboyant Mario Cantone. Who would have known he'd have gone on to play a homsexual in Sex and the City? There were a lot of guys we could have taken , Wayne Martin another DE went to the PB. Steve Atwater was also a 1st round pick. How about Dallas, they draft Aikman #1, then 2 Pro Bowl OL in the 2nd and 3rd round.
Lageman had a great motor and was a good player. Even though the "experts" claimed we could have gotten him in Round 2, who knows. I'd rather get a good productive player then one who is supposed to go in the 1st round and doesn't pan out like the following great 1st round picks we had Mike Haight Roger Vick Kyle Brady Blair Thomas Vernon Gholston Johnny Mitchell Anthony Becht and to cause a stir I'll add Dustin Keller to the list. We have no business picking Tight Ends in the 1st round. Every single one we picked was not worthg it and just think of the great Tight Ends in the league now who were not 1st round picks (Gronkowski, Finley, Graham, Gates etc)
