For the first time in what seems like decades the Jets have a top 10 offense offically. If we don't make the playoffs its gonna be heartbreaking .....here's the link http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/total
I'm not gonna lie, if you told me in August that the Jets would have a top 10 offense, I would have thought they were primed for a deep playoff run. I'm not going to say that the defense has been disappointing (it's been a fine unit) but I anticipated it to be a little more dominant. In their defense, it seems like every week the scoreboard doesn't indicate how well the defense played, whether it be because of the special teams unit letting up points (Eagles, Bills, Giants games) or because of the offense putting the D in a compromising position with turnovers. It has also been forced to play without key players like Sheldon, Pryor and now Revis; it seems as if the entire unit has never all been on the field for the same time, outside of the Redskins and first half of the Patriots games. I've seen signs of "clicking" on defense lately, and I'm hoping that when Revis comes back and we're fully manned for the first time all year, we start playing like the top 5 defense I think we have the talent to be. If you can pair that with the respectable offense we've been fielding, then you've got something to work with in January.
I would definitely argue that the defense has under-performed, but I also think the offense has had some huge, game-changing mistakes that probably serve to take away from those numbers a little bit. And our special teams probably cost us both the Eagles and Bills games. Completely agree. I actually thought the Giants game was one of the most impressive defensive performances we've had all year. We were missing two of our three best corners (including a guy who is undoubtedly still a top 5 cb in the league) and we gave up 13 points on defense and forced a game-changing turnover. To me, getting the defense playing up to its ability is the key to the rest of the season.
Wow I didn't realize that we've let up 3 special teams scores. I mean once a season is understandable, sometimes someone just gets by your kick team, but 3 games!? We're still solid on defense, as good as we've ever been in run D (1st in the league), but our pass D has been below average surprisingly.
That all good and everything, but I think the rankings should be on how many points you score. That the bottom line in this league.
Any of us would've thought before the season , that if we had a top 10 offense at this point of the season , we most likely would be contending for the division , and would be locked into a playoff spot. To now have to struggle for the postseason is kind of a bummer. I like that we have a good shot to win the next 2 games but thats still a long ways away. Doesnt change the fact that its still a bummer though. 4 games against current non-playoff teams that are horrible losses. Even winning 1 of those games would've been a huge advantage right now. Reminds me of 09 after the Atlanta loss. I read a stat that no team in NFL history led the league in total defense and rushing and missed the playoffs. Now obviously we eventually got in but its sort of similar with how good decent our offense has been this year.
Don't take this kind of offense for granted. Remember everytime Sanchez/Geno would take a 5 or 7 step drop? I don't know about you guys, but I'd get nervous and think to myself, "Here comes the turnover". Now, I'm fairly confident that when we are passing or running, we have a pretty good chance of tearing off some decent yardage. It's a strange feeling as a Jets fan, one I haven't felt in some time.
This has to be the ugliest top 10 offense in Football! In a league where offense is now king, we're actually in the upper tier. Am I shocked? you betcha! Am I happy about it? absolutely!!!
The biggest problem is that Ivory is a one drive in the first half asset at this point. I almost cringe when he comes out blazing on the first drive because lately that's the last time we'll see him get carries until near halftime. Maybe the Jets should come out in a spread against the Titans and save Ivory for the "we're up 17-7, time to start grinding the clock" part of the game?
maybe, but Ivory has been inconsistent with protecting the ball lately. Career-wise he's been great but he's lost the ball quite a few times this year. When you watch him run through the line, the ball is not always tight to his body. Maybe Bowles is sending him a message?
He gets up after his second or third carry every game and starts checking his legs. He's got to have a strained hammy or something going on at this point. If it was 2005 I'd wonder if he was getting an injection before the game and was doing an inventory to make sure his legs were still attached after his first hard hit but I don't think anybody in the NFL runs that routine any more after the new CBA.
I could be wrong but of the last 3 fumbles, I think 2 came on his first carry after he was on the bench for a while. I don't see the sense of letting him sit so much--he seems to be great when he's the workhorse. If he gets injured, oh well. The way he's being used now is shit.
I agree he needs to stay involved in the offense. Maybe bowles was just letting him know, "we can do this without you, hold onto the damn ball" Once the message was received, and he covers the ball better while in traffic, they'll run him like they were in the beginning of the season. Just a theory
We are projected to have a 1000 yd HB and 2 1000 yr WRs for the first time since 1998. Anyone who says Chan Gailey hasn't done a great job is a moron.
