this is the same guy who guaranteed we'd win the division after we beat Buffalo and the Pats were in their 3 game losing streak. Things change quickly in this league, would any sane individual have said the Giants at 7-7 off the redskins humiliation would be in the SB? we need to make some changes but we'll have a great shot to rebound and be a top team again if we make the right changes.

A lot of what he says is valid, but you have to take the doom-saying slant on it with a grain of salt since Lombardi's ties to the Pats and Raiders have pretty much had him doom-saying the Jets since he started working for NFLN.

What he said is somewhat valid, BUT no one is safe in this league,, NO ONE. So yes the Jets can still put the fear of God into these players.. We have a new coaching staff in plave with no love to any of them.. If they dont work together as 1 unit they will be on the outside looking in. I have faith this could be fixed, but so many people think it cant. I think money talks and the BS walks. Lets see who the first is to walk. Someone on this team will be made an example of,, But who????

Who cares that he doesn't have a blue chip player in the front 7 on defense? 3 years, 3 top 5 defenses. Case closed. The facts speak for themselves. And it shows how intelligent a defensive mind Rex is since he produces a top defense lacking top talent.

We keep drafting offense, because we know our defense can flourish despite who's back there.

I'd also like to know his definition of a blue chip player if he doesn't think David Harris is one.

Probably more along lines of say, Patrick Willis or Demarcus Ware or someone that OC's have to gameplan for specfically.

He made at least a few good points. For Sanchez to improve we need a star RB, Tannenbaum sucks and Keller sucks as a blocker. Look for the Jets to go after a back in FA, through trade or early in the draft. Same with big TEs.

Where are these major holes aside from qb, safety, OLB, WR and RT?

I just dont get this crap. Its not like we are the fucking Bucs or some other awful team. We were an 8 win team.

On offense, LT, LG, C, RG, FB, HB, and TE are set. QB is probably set as long as someone better is not available. And even there, you are getting either a veteran to back-up/compete with Sanchez or Manning. At WR, the Jets are drafting a WR, bringing in a veteran, and keeping either Plax or Tone. Not that much money to spend there, and they still have Kerley.

And at RT, it will either be Rob Turner or a free agent filling in at RT.

As for defense, that is set at DE, NT, DE, OLB, MLB, MLB, CB, CB and S. 9 of the 11 guys will be the same. They will add depth, either Barron or an Upshaw to address one of the issues (hopefully Barron, and bring back Smith and Jimmy). The the other position (probably OLB) will be filled by either a rookie or a free agent.

This isn't a team with a million holes. There are really just a handful. The biggest question is whether the qb play will be good or not. If not, no amount of upgrades will matter. If yes, than the Jets will be fine.

It's the typical piling on a team that had high aspirations that didn't make the playoffs. Team won 8 games. The season was a disappointment, but I'm sick of these articles treating this team like it won 4 games and is doomed for the future.

Why does David Harris continue to get overlooked?

Exactly. I dont get this doom and gloom. This team had the worst season they probably could have and still went 8-8.

This was not a 2 win team with no talent. This was an 8 win team that blew 4-5 games. The defense had as bad a year as they possibly could have. The running game played below their abilities, as did the whole offense. And they still won 8 games.

With a few additions and either a good year from Sanchez or a real NFL qb, and this team is winning no fewer than 11 games next year.

This team really reminds me of the 2009 Steelers. Just missed the playoffs, basically brought back the same team with a few changes and won it all..

TBH, Jets fans overrate David Harris as much as non-Jets fans underrate him.

I like the guy, he brings a game that is well above average, but he's not a blue chip player at all.

Yes, it is realistic. Since 2005 three wildcard teams have won the superbowl.

The Giants won their last game, and they're in the superbowl, had they lost that game, they would have missed the playoffs.

If Lombardi wasn't a fucking moron he'd remember that the other NY team was basically in the SAME FUCKING SITUATION so yes, it is realistic.

Good comparison. Reminds me of the Favre year as well. Collapsed in December, read the same articles saying the team was doomed for the future, came back with roughly the same team the following year, albeit a new coaching staff, and every expert thought we wouldn't win 6+ games. This could mostly be due to going from Favre to Sanchez, but the parallels between the two seasons are similar.

Lombardi is making pretty much the same argument I've been making in the free agents thread

    Lombardi's view is overly harsh.
FA Upgrades at S and RT will not break the bank
I think the DL could be good
Hopefully signing Pouha will not be too costly.
    He underrates Harris.
Impact OLB @ our position in the draft is very doable.

    Problem is on "O"

If we go after a blue-chip RB, that eats up $$$$$$$$ for anything else
Is it really worth it? Could RB by committee be a better alternative?
TE/WR needs to be upgraded and $$ would be better spent there than at blue chip running back

    Oh and:

I assume he's talking about since Rex got here, Since Tanny's drafts prior to that were very good. These were the drafts:

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?teamId=3430&type=team

His cute little 9 of 13 number discounts the fact that for the past two years, no skill position player has been drafted earlier than round 4. On top of that, calling Conner a running back is a bit misleading.

In fact, if we look at the whole Tanny era, Tanny has had fifteen picks in the first three rounds, and taken only four skill position players. Three of which start for us today (Sanchez, Keller, Greene) one does not (Clemens).

Drafting all that defense has in fact worked out well for us, since we've had a good defense for a few years now.

Lombardi should call Tanny, apologize for this libel, and ask him how to be a real GM.
