Raiders cut QB Collins in salary-cap move
    JANIE McCAULEY
    Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Oakland Raiders parted ways with quarterback Kerry Collins in a move to get them below the salary cap by Sunday night's deadline.

By cutting Collins, the Raiders will save $9.2 million against the salary cap once bonuses are factored into the figures.

The Raiders were forced to cut Collins after the NFL and its players union broke off talks again, failing to agree upon an elevated cap number that would have allowed teams to keep certain high-priced veterans. The team had been waiting for word on negotiations before making a final decision on Collins' future with the organization.

The 33-year-old Collins had a 7-21 record in two years as Oakland's starter and said at the end of the season he was willing to restructure his deal but would not play for "peanuts."

New coach Art Shell said when he was hired last month that he believed Collins could be a "great" quarterback for the Raiders, but the team still had to figure out what it would do with him.

The Raiders already made moves this offseason to reduce their payroll for next season. They released defensive lineman Ted Washington, offensive lineman Ron Stone and defensive back Denard Walker last week. They also declined a $10 million option for 2006 for safety Derrick Gibson. Those moves created more than $18 million in additional cap space for 2006.

Oakland also declined to use a franchise tag on Charles Woodson, who made $10.537 million last season.

The Raiders scored only 51 points, with just six touchdowns, in their final five games and lost their last six overall and eight of nine despite an offense featuring Collins, Randy Moss, LaMont Jordan and Jerry Porter. At 4-12, they finished with one fewer victory than in fired coach Norv Turner's first season a year ago.

Perhaps the most glaring statistic is Oakland's failure to win a division game for the first time since owner Al Davis came aboard in 1963 to coach and eventually own the team. The Raiders went 1-11 against the AFC West during Turner's two seasons.

Collins started the season well, but couldn't maintain any consistency. He completed 302 passes for 3,759 yards - his most since 2002 with the Giants - and 20 touchdowns. He also was sacked 39 times and threw 12 interceptions.

Guess this means Andrew Walter will get the chance to win the starting job, probably against Tuiasasopo. I think Tuiasasopo is really bad, so Walter's got a great chance there.

Collins still has something left, imo, so it'll be interesting to see where he turns up.

Tuiasosopo won't be a raider next season. Dosen't fit the offense. A Veteran FA QB will be in to battle A Walter for starting job. (J McCown,Ramsey)

Whaddaya mean, "doesn't fit the offense"? He can hand off twice for a combined 4 yards and then throw a 5-yard pass as well as anyone, I'd think.

Man, Randy Moss is going to have an absolute meltdown before the end of October.

I actually think that Andrew Walter could be a fair starting quarterback in this league. I've watched every one of his pre-season passes. He was erratic, and not all that accurate, but he seemed to be poised. Tom Walsh ought'a have him killed-off soon enough.

UPDATE: Collins was NOT released. He may be released later this week, but as of now, he's still on the roster. They have to decide whether to pay him a 2.5 million roster bonus.

I don't know what you were watching but Walter was extremly accurate and impressive this preseason. Raiders love this Kid. Has it all Size 6'6 235, ARM, Quick release, Pocket awareness and poise as he dosen't get rattled. Broke J Elway Pac 10 passing records and if he didn't get hurt in college ,Leinart would never had caught him. Raiders stole him in third round and he's the reason they won't be taking a Qb with first pick.

Still as impressive Walter looked this preseason, you still have to cover yourself and bring in a veteran Qb to compete with Walter for starting job. Just in case Walter not ready for 2006.
Let just say this, I Like Raider chances competed with any team looking for a veteran QB. R Moss, J porter, D Gabriel, R curry, J Morant and L jordan are pretty good weapons that any Qb wouldn't mind having.

    Raiders give Collins a stay
Extended waiver wire deadline buys QB at least three more days
    By Jerry McDonald, STAFF WRITER

Kerry Collins was given a blindfold and a cigarette Sunday night before getting the news he was being spared for at least three more days.
Collins was to be cut by the Oakland Raiders at 8:30 p.m., only to learn the waiver wire deadline had been extended until Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Just curious, when you're not polling Raider boards to find out how many people like the Shell hiring or watching each of Andrew Walter's preseason passes, do you find time to follow the Jets?

It was Pathetic But It easily fixable. Here Problems that raiders had on offense 1. Oline 2 Raiders refused(didn't trust collins) to throw to certain parts of the field 3. coaching staff running the same play without changing the look 4. Injuries.

Oline - This is the biggest mistake Turner made last year, changing from man blocking scheme that was so effective in 2004, to a zone blocking scheme, that everyone on oline struggled with in 2005. Also some key injuries to OL-LG L Walker( line really deteriote when he was lost for season on a freak injury. C J Grove - missed alot of games due to injury, forcing A treu to play alot. Tough when your center gets thrown two yards back into your backfield. B badger at best is a backup and due to injuries, had to play alot - was also playing on a very bad knee.

Just looking at raider coaching staff ARt Shell, Co Olinecoach J Slater and Co Ol coach Irv eatman(KC asistant oline coach for last couple years) that Raiders are serious about fixing the oline.
First move they made was go back to man on man blocking scheme. Second they plan to better utilize there talent on oline by moving the Olineman around. R Gallery will be starting LT, LT B sims will move to Lg, C J Grove RG will be a FA or draft choice RT Langston Walker 6'8 340 moves to his more natural RT. The Raiders have talent on oline and that young talent will bounce back in 2006.

    2. Raiders coaches refused to let collins work the middle of the field because that where he throws most of his interceptions. Look at the stats, Collins for most of the season didn't throw many interceptions , only after there season was over, (let him work middle) did he throw a high percentage of interceptions. Defense cooprdinators aren't stupid and if your not going to work the middle , they will better defense areas you want to throw ball.

Also Raiders didn't take advantage enough of Moss. Teams played 10 yards off and they didn't take the cheap yards underneath teams were giving them. R Moss with his speed can take a five yard pass and go along way.

3 Espn showed numerous time how Raiders ran the same formation, every week without giving a diffrent look to a defense. IT was so bad that rookies were jumping the patterns, because they seen on film and knew what play was going to me.

4 INjuries - R Moss after the first four weeks was one of the league leading recievers. Only reason his numbers suffered was he was severly hurt early against the chargers. R Moss was never anywhere close to 80% (rest of season and he was on field about 50- 60% of the time. When your QB and Wr don't practice , you don't know how long your star WR will play, and he clearly dosen't haave anything close to his normal speed . You can see why offense was so bad.

I live in NJ, I'm forced to follow you guys (although I choose to come to this board and it's fun)! But I have a hard time believing that you watched every one of Walter's passes. It seems implausible, especially since Joe is actually right, he was very accurate.

Either way, it's possible you have a problem. Paging Dr. Melfi!

Collins will be cut before the week is out. Most of Collins problem stemmed from the O line that underperformed. That will be fixed, I guarentee that, with Slater and Shell calling the shots. Say what you will, but those were good hires from the O line point of view.

As Kerry got later in the season, he got gun shy. Believe me, I watched it happen. Early in the year, Moss was getting the balls, but as Kerry ran for his life, I think he got to the point where he was afraid of the hits, and checked off a lot and did not wait for the plays to develop. Most of the blame on this comes from Raye and Norv. Kerry was not well coached late in the season, nor was the O line.

And I agree, Collins is destined to be a Raven, IMO. You have Chad, you dont need the headache of him having to look over his shoulder. the Jets should pick up a backup, not a starter in a backup role. Collins still sees himself as a starter, so will look for a starting role.
