The Jets' hunt for a safety will continue Thursday, when free agent Brandon Meriweather is currently scheduled to visit, a person with knowledge of the visit confirmed. That person requested anonymity because the team has not announced the visit. Meriweather was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Patriots before the team cut him last September. He played for the Bears last season and is now a free agent. The Jets expressed interest in Meriweather on the first day of free agency but he has also taken visits to other teams, including the Broncos and the Redskins. The New York Post first reported his visit to the Jets. Also on the Jets' radar are safeties Reggie Nelson and LaRon Landry, but no known visits are scheduled for either yet. All were first-round draft picks in 2007. The Jets have Eric Smith in place at one starting spot, but both Jim Leonhard (season-ending patellar tendon tear) and Brodney Pool are free agents and might not be back. This from Jenny Vrentas
If Leonard projects to be healthy before the season, he needs to be brought back in my opinion. His smarts and intangibles are essential compared to what he costs. We need to bring in an upgrade to place opposite Leonard, and relegate Eric Smith to a back-up role. I'm not very familiar with any of Meriweather, Nelson, or Landry. Can anybody more knowledgeable give a breakdown of the strengths and weaknesses of those three?
That would be ideal. A strong cover guy opposite Leonhard would be huge for the defense going into 2012. Almost as important as a legit pass rusher.
Nelson - Best all around safety avail IMO but older Landry - Physical Beast - Big hitting run stuffer, lacks in coverage Meriweather - Middle of the road safety, Not great at anything. not particularly bad either. IMO We should resign Jimmy, Sign Landry as a SS. Move Wilson to CB#2,.. Cro to FS Smith to backup and Let Trufant and whoever fight out for the nickel spot.
I hope he doesn't sign. He's a dick-head... and we don't need a dick head in our locker room. Especially if he's also a JAG.
There are 22 starters on an NFL team. For most teams, 15-18 are JAGs (this number is probably too low). I'm not really sure what all of you expect.
All 3 were first round picks in 2007. Nelson- age 29 5'11 205 Strength's: Range/Tackling ability/Ball skills Weaknesses: Footwork/consistency Merriweather- Age 28 5'11 210 Strength's: Range/physicality/hips Weaknesses: Instincts/discipline Landry Age 28 6' 220 Strength's:Triangle numbers/Physicality/Play in the box Weaknesses: Durability/Footwork/instincts
Yes excepts he would bounce off and Gronk would say"Little man make Gronk angry" and continue on for his 4th TD of the game!

And I'd rather spend more on a Landry or Nelson or draft someone in the 2nd round then sign a guy who all we'd see is his dreds chasing someone from behind after he took a bad angle or leaving his feet and getting 15 yard hitting defenseless receiver penalties.
