So I decided to try and put myself in the shoes of all the guys who think "D" is the way to go. What would I do? So here is my attempt at doing the opposite of what I hope the Jets do:

First, I trade back with the Saints for their 11 and 32 picks.

    Then:

    11. Haasen Reddick LB; or Derek Barnett DE - looking for that elite pass rusher.
    32. Obi Melifonwu S; or Budda Baker S - looking for somebody to stop all those long TDs.
    39. Cam Robinson OT; or Forrest Lamp - looking to shore up the OL.
    70. Jake Butt TE; or Joe Mixon - finally looking to upgrade the "O" skill positions.
    107. Sidney Jones CB - If he's there still could be a steal.

After those picks I'd look for the BPA relative to need.

And look - not even a mention of Mahomes or Watson!

Sorry, not a fan. I think #11 is too high for both Reddick and Barnett, but I could be wrong. An edge rusher is definitely a need, but I don't think either are that good that they deserve to go that high. I'm not a fan of Cam Robinson and while Lamp should be a great pro, I think taking an OG that high this year is a waste. The starters at OG are set for the Jets this year imo. Lamp's good enough he could start now. Mixon probably won't last until #70, and I don't think I'd take him anyway. There are better TEs in the draft that Butt imo.

Baker or Melifonwu I'd like and probably Jones if he recovers fully from his injury.

    1. Reddick is not a true edge rusher.
    2. Obi, who isn't even a true free safety to begin with. You didn't do your homework with this one. He's a strong safety like Cam from Seattle. We need a true center fielder.
    3. Budda good prospect, but not nearly as good as Adams and Hooker.

Jets don't need guards and that's Lamp and Cam Robinson. Where are they gonna play? Obi? Where is he playing?

I like Mixon and Jones but that's about it. So there are a bunch of players that you selected that might not even play.

In Colorado's defense, Obi has played CB and a good bit of FS at Connecticut, so may have the potential to be an NFL FS. He certainly has the speed and range. Now Baker is not as good a prospect as Adams or Hooker, but that's why he would be taken in the 2nd round instead of at #6 or #11 in the first round.

I do agree regarding Lamp and Robinson.

I like Jones' potential, but will he fully recover from his injury? The Jets will need to take some risks in order to achieve greatness, but am not sure if this would be the best risk. If he's there at their 3rd round compensatory pick, then I wouldn't have a problem with their taking him, but wouldn't like their taking him any higher than that.

I love Mixon's talent/ability, but his character concerns me greatly. The ONLY way I'd even consider taking him is if they thoroughly vetted his character, had extensive conversations with him, admits that he has an anger management problem and needs help, he agreed to some counseling and to the Jets adding a clause in his contract to protect them in case he has another incident.

Obi when I saw some of his tape on draftbreakdown, I question his field speed, I feel like if I have to question that at the collegiate level, it's going to be an issue at the NFL level. He's a big guy 6'3, 215. Dude is a good tackler, and has cover ability, but I think he might be better closer to the ball going up against TEs. Very intelligent player, but to be honest nothing really stood out when I watched him. He's a solid player, but he's not a true center fielder IMO.

Mixon is a headache no doubt, extensive conversation and clauses need to be required in his contract. I think we got some good mentors for him, Forte and Powell. Maybe Curtis recognizes the man needs help and turns to him as a figure. We've had great RBs in this franchise, would be nice for them to mentor the guy for a little bit.

Jones is a beast, but I agree I have concerns too and I don't think it's a good idea to take him in the 3rd. That's a tough decision to make, glad I am not the GM lol. Valid reason for concern in terms of Mixon / Jones.

I mean this isn't even a mock. Why two players for every selection?

It depends on who is still there at that pick.

Because of the trade back I figured that Adams and Hooker will be long gone. I like Obi's size and athleticism and drive, and I think he could be that "centerfielder" for them.

Reddick isn't a true edge rusher, but he can get to the QB and be disruptive in several different roles, so I went for his flexibility, drive and his physical tools.

The Jets need to upgrade the OL, especially OT, and while some have questioned Robinson, others thing that he's going to step up, Again, the Jets need to roll the dice to try and find some exceptional talent. As for Lamp, he may well be better suited to OG, but he has played LT a lot, and he might well be able to be better than anyone else they have or can get. It was late when I did this, and I forgot about Davenport who I like a lot, and who might be there in a later round.

So that's my reasoning. I respect yours and others opinions here, and am not stomping my feet and saying I'm right. I just figured I would take a shot at looking at things from a different perspective.

Jets need a true edge rusher, in which his role and only role is to rush the QB and bring the pain. Reddick won't be a 10 sack a season guy that can bring much needed speed off the edge on every down. He's a jack of all trades. Does he have the violent hands? The pass-rush moves?

Obi and his game speed is not up to par in comparison to Hooker. Check him out on draftbreakdown. He's a good player, but he's not a guy at the NFL you want playing center-field. He's more effective closer to the LOS / intermediate. Teams are actually trying him out at linebacker. I would recommend looking at Marcus Williams from Utah if you want to go safety late.

Both the guys above had their stock increase during the combine ... they are combine warriors and you gotta be careful with that

In terms of Lamp, his best chance at NFL success is an interior lineman [guard]. Jets don't need a guard, we need a LT one with excellent feet speed, hands and measurables.

But a Mock, you can't have 3 or 4 choices per round ... gotta be confident and know the players you want!

That's not how a mock draft works.

So you're saying that teams just have a Draft List, with one player in each round listed? Huh! I didn't realize that.

A mock draft consists of the player you think they will take. Might as well add 3 players to each selection.

Colorado never even called it a "mock" draft. Give the guy a break. It was an exercise in trying to think of some possible defensive players the Jets might like/take. It was an exercise in creative thinking and I give him kudos for that, because he really wants offense. I haven't seen any of us who think the better talent is on D for the most part doing an exercise trying to think of possible offensive players we could draft instead of defensive players.
