What a joke of a 2nd round pick. Is the transistion from college to the NFL really that difficult for a kicker?

It is when kicking from Ohio St to the meadowlands. He won't get these sick kickoffs like he did in college over here because he doesn't have the leg. He just sucks and doesn't have the poise to handle big time kicks.

And shame on TB for cutting Bryant for Nugent. Serves them right that Nugent fails and Bryant won't be coming back.

This goes under the "dog bites man" category of surprises. What is much more interesting is that he was getting $2 million for the season. With a GM making decisions like that, it's not really surprising that the Bucs are horrible.

The Doug Brien/Mike Nugent situationw as a dark time for the kicking position in NY and Tampa. We lost a huge playoff game and an important draft pick off that crap.

    Odell Thurman
    Marcus Johnson
    Ronald Bartell
    Nick Collins
    Khalif Barnes
    Dan Cody
    Eric Shelton
    Roscoe Parrish
    Darrent Williams

Those are the guys in between Nugent and our pick of Justin Miller. A bad second round for us.

    Really?? REALLY?

I fucking hated Nugent but i'd have rather wasted that second on him than in drafting that asscap Odell Thurman to play here.

You know, as much as I want to hate Nuge, I really can't force myself to care about the guy. Maybe I didn't pay close enough attention but I never thought he was that bad. Definitely not surprised he's out of a job though.

And Nuge's base salary $2mil? That's crazy. Is that based solely on years in the league?

nugent didn't even have a big leg

i remember him missing a 51 yarder short vs the Saints when we were awful. it would have won the game.

Thus the end of Nugent's career perhaps.

    You're not the only one.
I can't get that whole scenario out of my head ---- the Doug Jolley draft day trade-down out of the 1st round to pickup Mike Nugent in the 2nd round.
When all we had to do was the smart simple pick of Heath Miller.

Effin' Bradway trying to be cute.
4 yrs from Nugent & 1 lousy season from that POS Jolley.

    + 1

I think for the most part everyone knows how I feel about this douchebag. Good riddance for the Jets and hopefully the league.

...so 5 out of 9 could've been better choices?

(That was the worst second round class in a long time)

...and we could probably found a kicker in free agency who could have performed better. I Love having Westhoff on the team but never again should we allow his input on the draft choices.

Anybody can look back at a draft and make the right call four years later. Kickers win and lose games for you, they decide playoffs and seasons, ultimately. In this case we didn't take the right guy, but in theory after having a good season ended by a crappy kicker, I can see the value in drafting high at the position. Like any other position, if you get it wrong you've wasted the pick.

I was freaking out the second I heard the pick. You don't take a kicker until the later rounds or as an UDFA.

Unless you think you see one who can win games for you. The Raiders took Janikowski with a #1.

There has only been one kicker taken in the first round that was worth it: Ray Guy.

/Prays this doesn't bring RaiderJoke into the thread.

You're using the Raiders as an example. And that was 1 kicker out of how many over the years?
